There is an overabundance of quality SGs on Protector.
Most have smaller rosters, but are comprised of experienced, mature players who are dedicated and fun to hang out with.
Most probably whatever one you pick will still be in contact with a bunch of others (via global channels or coalitions) so eventually you'll meet a large percentage of all the server's players that way.
If you're interested, follow the links in my signature for the Mentor Project. I think might be able offer you some assistance - at least answer some of your questions.

Well we are out of the complimentary toasters and blenders. Just as well, they tended to short out at those odd moments when a fire isn't the most welcome thing to have.
I can offer you a wonderful can opener though. It seems to be a bit sturdier made than the aforementioned appliances. Just watch your fingers.

As far as recommendations, you might want to check the following Global Channels (those are the ones I know about, if there are others... how come I ain't heard of youse ?)
- N P C - The "New Player Committee" Channel, and part of the Mentor Project Stalemate was talking about earlier. Very new-player friendly...
- Protector Vigilance - Keeping an eye on everything that is going on: server events, TFs, etc.
- Protector Watch and Protector TFs - I don't use those meself, but I was told (... at gun-point) that they're useful too (just kidding about the gun.. in fact it was a knife...)
- At last but not least: JELLO SHOOTERS - The closest thing we have around here to a Biker Bar. Not for the prudes or the faint of hearts, but that's where you will find some of the most experienced, wacky, friendly or simply LOUD players on this server...
You might also want to give a listen to KJSR (http://kjsr.net) an Internet radio that "spun off" from the Jello Shooters channel (K-Jello-Shooters-Radio). From easy listening to death metal with everything in between, it is open 24/7 thanks to its Auto-DJ, DJ JohnnyFever.

Um... I just want to say that Protector is cool and filled with great players. Welcome to the city and enjoy the stay.
Welcome back! 5 years is a hell of a lay-off on the game.
The game, needless to say, is now quite different from the one you previously played.
Granted, you're low enough level that this won't directly affect any existing toons in an adverse manner.
Graphics have gotten better.
Leveling has gotten progressively easier.
More options to where and how you play.
LOTS of guides on how to build yourself up if you're unsure.
Honestly not sure if Mids Hero Designer was around back them (it's essentially a nice build-planner that gives you all the numbers and stats so you can see how your build looks on paper before burning cash on building it that way).
There has never been a better time to be playing than right now.

Well, it's been a couple of weeks. I figured I'd post some type of update.
First of all, thanks for all the posts. Was great to receive a warm welcome.
So, what have I done in 2 weeks?
~I've continued to play sporadically
~I've continued to split time amongst alts
~I got a character(Quantum Dude) to Lvl 20. This allowed me to see the 2 "Epic ATs" This made me happy. Always nice to have a goal. First it was lvl 10, then it was lvl 14 so I could fly, then it was lvl 20 to unlock the ATs, now its.......er......uh..... lvl 30?
~Conned, er, uh I mean convinced a friend to play as well. Always fun to wander aimlessly with other like-minded folk. This also meant for fun we decided to start a supergroup. Why? I say to you why not 
Do we have any major plans with it? Nope, but we do have a superbase and that is just cool! We made sure to invite some of each others alts so we could put some things in there, but it's basically a hole in the wall. But we have one. The name of the SG is "Suburban Knights" We are small, have no major plans, and absolutely no commitments. Feel free to stop by if you'd like
~Still have not found the AT that completely fits my style of play though. My "main" is a blaster and I do enjoy the graphics of him blasting stuff from above, so he is definitely my "goto guy" at the moment. Although that Dual Pistols power looks pretty neat, maybe I'll hint to that for a father's day present
~It's been a fun 2 weeks. Look for me on normally later in the evenings 10PM or so Central Time. Chat channel name is Gnipp. Lots of Alts so who knows what character I'll be on as.

Yeap, another one of those posts where someone introduces themself.
I actually played back in 2005 with a 14 day trial a friend gave me. However I was playing some other games and didn't stay.
I just started my account this week and found a couple of old characters that I played back then. Highest level being 7
So, by all accounts I am new and will be trying various characters to see which one "feels" right for my playstyle.
And what is that playstyle? Casual & fun. I don't really care for PvP - just not my style. I will be on at random times and probably with not too much consistancy.
Why am I telling you all this? I don't know, but if anyone has any recommendations I'm all ears and hopefully I'll meet a few of you online.
