Farewell, friend.

I don't post much on these boards but I figured this deserved a mention.

I joined up with CoX back in 2006, on the Red Side (being a bad guy with robot minions appealed to me more than a do-gooder). I randomly picked the Infinity server and played around with a robot/traps MM solo until I ran into a couple people near Drea the Hook in Port Oakes. These two people were Mitch and Jeanne (their irl names, naturally). Through them I later met Mike, Mitch's brother and Jeanne's husband.

From that chance encounter we terrorized the Rogue Isles, and as one, move to Paragon City and formed the House of Grimple. We ran all the TFs together, created AE mishes about our characters' own mythologies, laughed, cut up, got frustrated, badge hunted, and celebrated anniversaries, birthdays, graduations, promotions, and other things.

Through it all, Mike chronicled every one of our adventures in what he called "Grimple Files." These were awesome collages and short comics depicting adventures in game, and story lines that he made up on his own. Literally every single time we ran a mission with Mike, he'd make a Grimple file, and e-mail it out to everybody in the SG, which grew from just us and our alts, to many, many, MANY more.

Mike eventually turned out 924 or so G-files.

I just found out a few minutes ago that Mike has passed away.

Mike was a friend, and somebody I wish I had gotten to know better. I'd been talking to him via e-mail the past few weeks, and he was gearing up for Going Rogue. He was really excited about the prospects it could bring to his fun creations and story-telling opportunities.

Mike was a leader. He was always the one guiding the SG along, keeping us together, making up extravagant AE missions for us. With him gone, I don't know what will happen to the SG, but it's lost a big piece of its heart now, and it is less with him.

Mike was an artist. Most (if not all) of us here love comics in some form or another. It's why we play an MMO based around comic book lore. Mike wove stories and histories and relationships and betrayals and made the game his own world, and made it richer for those of us that played with him.

And, of course, Mike was a hero.

I'm grateful to the Devs for making this game, without which I would not have met Mike, his hilarious brother, or his wonderful wife. I'm sorry he's gone, but I'm glad to have known him.

So long, Mike.

What a beautiful friendship you shared with your friend Mike, Justin. I am sowrry to hear that he has crossed over and I am sowrry for the tremendous loss you feel.

I hope you will pick up the torch and carry the SG on in Mike's memory. Perhaps one day, you can share some of those files with us so we can enjoy his talents that he shared with you and the SG.

RIP, Mike.

Very sad for your loss. Just know that though he is no longer here in the physical state, the memory and changes he brought in his life can never be removed.

Be strong.

I and many of my alts have been members of the House of Grimple from the first day I started CoH nearly four years ago. It was Mike, Jeanne, and Mitch who made the game so wonderful for me as a new player, not just to CoH but to MMO's. Their hilarious interactions, role-playing, and leadership made the game so much fun. We did tf's and story arcs together and Mike would make wonderful art and stories from the many screenshots he took. In fact, Mike sacrificed himself many times to get the perfect screenshot. Mike's characters were hysterically funny, and he would play the part with such enthusiasm that I and the rest of us Grimples couldn't help but go along.

I am deeply saddened by his passing, and will greatly miss him and his Grimple Files. Mike was a friend. My heart goes out to Mitch and Jeanne. I truly love them all.

As for HoG. I will continue to be a part of that SG, even if I have to be the only active player. Giving that up would be giving up a large part of the game.

I think I ran some task forces with House of Grimple people, and they've always been extremely cool. I don't know if I ever did with Mike or not, but I can only imagine that if I had, he would have been really cool, too.

Say, you know what would be a good tribute? Share with us some of these Grimple Files! They sound awesome, and you have piqued my curiosity. I really want to know what they were like. I ran the Taxibots on Infinity for a while, and I know how hard it is collecting this offline stuff and spreading it out, and I really would like to see someone else's efforts. Maybe even after this tragedy, Mike can be a teacher and inspiration for us to be better at a pastime he obviously loved.

We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
(If you love this game as much as I do, please read that post.)

It's a strange thing, to lose a friend met while on an online game. Many times we don't know the ways we impact those around us while in our fantasy world. My best to Mike's family while they endure their loss. May his soul travel its new road in peace.
