Trying to squeeze in a little defense with my PB.

Okay, I'm trying to work in a little extra survivability with my PB to give me the chance to hit that heal one more time and stay up in a tough fight. I managed to get 18% S/L and 16% Melee.

I'm appending my build for yall to review, but my big question is: is 16%/18% worth it? Will I even notice it? I tend to play builds that have either no defense or capped defense, so I'm not too sure about something in between.

And I already have all the purples/Lotg's slotted in my current build, so that is not a problem.

I may be mistaken but I don't imagine it is going to help you enough to work your build towards it.

It might be helpful to know your playstyle but I would think you would be far better off in pumping up your hitpoints and damage resistances than your defense.

For example if you could keep Essence Boost maxed that would be very helpful to your survival.

And just to make sure, you do know that your Miracle +Recovery and Numina's Reg/Rec will only operate for the 2 minutes after you click Essence Boost?

Essence boost last two minutes as well and I have it perma anyways. Works pretty well actually.

But that 18% is only against S/L and the 16% is melee only so it isn't like he has a universal 18/16 defense. It seems to me at the higher levels that won't be the actual defense benefit.

True enough, but S/L does cover a lot more than you'd imagine. For instance, Ice blast has lethal components to most of its attacks. Energy and Electric melee have smashing components to most of their attacks. It doesn't mean they all have S/L tags, of course.

And I do try to cover that in my guide. Notice I wasn't telling him "Yes it will" or "no it won't."

I was only offering my analysis and some subjective opinion that is in the guide to help him figure it out for himself.

Ah. I figured Carnies and Arachnos and such would mow him down with ranged non S/L attacks but I shall re-read your guide to get a better understanding of it. I am just used to my warshade with his cranked up resistances to everything and really high hitpoints and regeneration being hard to kill so I never much thought of defense for him.

How much do you team and how much do you solo? What difficulty settings?

Also, with middle-of the road defenses, be really wary of romans and others who debuff defense easily. They will strip you of your protection super fast and often do enough that only one or two purples won't help.

There should be a way, with all the powers available to a PB, to get higher than that. If you really want it, anyway.

Carnies and Arachnos are much more problematic to a S/L only defense build (they didn't give my AR/EM Blaster much issue with his Ranged only defense, but they're annoying with my Elec/Elec that is S/L only). S/L is nice for most of the game, other than those exotic mobs out there... which the +40 game has a lot of.

To the OP, I usually try to get into the low 20s... I do start to notice a difference there. Lower... is probably not going to help much, though 15% will make some difference. Just not much.
