Best Common IO Dom for 8 man solo?

I am just wondering what the best Dom would be for solo +0/+8 or maybe +1/+8? I have been thinking it is probably Plant/Psi for SoC and DP? I was also thinking Mind/Psi. I know all the primaries can be good enough to keep things locked down, but I am just wondering which would be the best overall on common Ios.

With just common IO's DP isn't up very often and PSW+psyscream don't cycle very fast and /psi does very little single target damage. Which means you'll need well above average mob control to wait out how long defeating them will take.

Mind is a good choice if you want to kill the group one at a time.

I'd say plant/fire. Seeds cycles quickly and fire packs a lot more punch. Earth/fire will also work well cycling between the various aoe controls. The -def is also fairly nice on a toon with no tohit buffs, especially with no IO bonuses.

OK, thanks. I am going to give plant/fire and earth/fire a try. I just got fire/fire to 20 and it is VERY damaging and I do like it, but I think with SoC it would be even better overall. I also think with the awesome control of earth I would not get hit as much. I got ice/ice to 20 and it was alright, but I was not really "happy" with it for whatever reason. I also tried plant/stone until level 10 and the stone attacks just seemed so boring that I had to stop lol.

My Plant/Fire/Soul is pretty nasty even with SOs.

I'll back plant/fire and earth/fire both. Also, sets are a lot cheaper than you might think. if you go for the weaker sets, often you can buy the recipe for next to nothing and there are hundreds available.

As an example, it is a common strategy for low-level players to make their first few million inf buying recipes for between 100 and 1000 inf (note that is not a typo, there is not supposed to be a "k" after those numbers I mean one hundred inf full stop) and selling them to the vendors for a profit.

Multistrike, airburst, detonation, ruin, maelstrom, etc all fit this category. In the holds you have second-tier sets like ghost widow and neuronic shutdown which give decent recovery and hp bonuses instead of the high-priced defense/recharge bonuses. In the immobilize you can always find trap of the hunter cheap. No it's not as good as Enfeebled Operation or Gravitic, but it's better than SOs and if you're careful less expensive too.

Now this will be a bit more expensive than common IOs, but many common IOs you expect to pay 200-300,000 inf for crafted and you can do the crafting yourself to get an equivalent crappy set IO for 80-150,000.

second-tier bonuses are still better than no bonuses. =)

I can be found, outside of paragon city here.
Thank you everyone at Paragon and on Virtue. When the lights go out in November, you'll find me on Razor Bunny.

I am actually playing ice/fire right now and I really like it so far! The main reason I finally decided against plant is because I have a ton of controllers and one is L50 plant. I just don't like feeling kinda useless when I face confuse res mobs. I do not have an ice controller so I think something new will be nice. I really like artic air also.

(I have no worries about money or buying sets. I just make a lot of alts and I know I am not getting them all to 50, so sets dont really matter to me most of the time) I always buy sets for the bonus to some degree and I know prices. I just don't want to base my toon on sets.

IMO you can't go wrong with a Mind/Psi.

I have one that is permadom and it is wonderful

(and it was, in relative terms, cheap to make perma too )

But Mind/ is a great set paired with almost anything IMO

I'm going to throw my two cents in regarding plant/fire. It's been a solid build since before IO's were available and is often recommended to new Doms to try. It used be called the "Tank" of Dominators.

Eden Fires guide from I6 still has plenty of good advice. Especially if you're not worried about set bonuses.

p.s. It's nice to see a post abut a building a "non-purpled" out ultimate toon. I wish there were more threads like this.

My level 50 Dominators:
Madame Mindbender 50 Mind/Energy
Fly Agaric 50 Plant/Thorn
Nate Nitro 50 Fire/Psi

Emphasis mine. I just went to check this guide out and stopped not two paragraphs in.

Your purpose is to protect your team. That is correct. I’ll repeat it, your purpose is to protect your team. You are no corruptor. Your damage is gimped to much for that and you really can’t heal the team or provide buffs or debuffs.
This may have been written before the Dom buffs, but any guide that starts off saying /Fiery is gimped isn't what I'm looking for when I'm building my new Plant/Fire.

/fiery (and late game psy) were damage monsters before the dominator buffs. /Fiery came out improved for the most part, though requires a lot more recharge than it used to, but now has a bit higher ceiling too. In all fairness it was actually more damaging pre changes for most moderately expensive builds (like mild permadom) than it is now, but it is still very good and if you throw a lot of recharge at it then look out. You'll have a lot of gaps in your attacks with just SO's on new /fiery, but that's ok as you have primary powers to stick in there. /Psi on the other hand is just a very mediocre set after the changes, but DP is a really cool power (but not really on SO's as it begs for high recharge).

Yes, the reason I stopped reading was because of how much I disagreed with that statement.
