I'd say reroll as a /dark. I had a /fire and a couple people i know did too and all were deleted. /Fire's dfense is meh, imo.

Great advice there from eryq... lol. Seriously though, what are you aiming for with this toon? Are you looking to make a farming toon, or do you want something capable of surviving AVs and such with ease.

Well, i'm just speaking from my personal experiences. Everyone has their own opinion. You can disagree, but it doesn't make you right either. I've yet to see a /fire defense capable of dealing with anything other than fire dealing baddies that it can easily softcap against. That's why my best suggestion was to reroll it. I wasnt being funny or a jerk, just my opinion.

Okay, but why would anyone think that Fiery Aura was a Defense set? FA has no Defense, it's a pure Resistance set, with superb Self-heal and Endurance-siphon powers. It's nearly impossible to soft-cap Defense on FA - even for the Tankers... so they don't even try. Instead, they build up HP/Regen/Recharge and power through on the Heal, while leveraging the damage dealing properties of Fiery Aura.

If someone told you that FA was a Defensive set, they were definitely leading you astray - it's an offensive Resistance powerset.

Gotta agree with Fireheart completely. Spines/Fire toons are rolled as offensive characters, and are not intended to be defensive. They rely on quick kills using burst and dot damage, and also on their resistance and healing. You can try all you like to soft cap their defense, but you'll be very lucky to do so. You'll also have to sacrifice some of what makes them what they are to get them to anywhere near soft capped on defense. Don't waste your time on their defense. Do what Fireheart said, and work on HP, recharge, regen and damage buffing.

Here's an example of a build that has about as much smashing/lethal defense as you're going to get. It isn't a great build, because it's not meant to be. It's just an example of how wrong you can go with spines/fire if you aim for a defensive build. Please don't criticise it, as I already know how bad it is lol.

easily softcap? You honestly can't know what you're talking about. FA has no defense, and resistance doesn't softcap. You're capped, or you're not (most often, not).

just because a set is defensive, doesn't mean it gives defense. These terms are completely different. Defense is not taking damage, resistance is lowering damage taken. Defensive sets can do either or both (among other things).

Not in on the controversey, but a quick note.

You are slotting Aegis and Multi-Strike for AoE and FC defense, but you skipped temperature protection which can give you 10% FC res. Unless you crave AoE def, which I fine nearly useless, especially in those low amounts.

It's a cool concept, do what you want, but understand your powers.

[I'd lose RotP to getthe temp protection, actualy, no, I don't play /fire]

My friend wanted help with a spines/fire farm build, so I made him one. Enemies die so fast, the amount of defense you'll get really doesn't matter that much, especially if when instead you build for recharge your heal is up every 12 seconds. And i'll be personally honest, I've never been a fan of fiery embrace, I'd personally ditch it for RotP at 49. No matter how you build it, its a scrapper, chances are you'll eat dirt one of these times :P. FE recharges so slowly though and with build up, I usually forget it's even there:

For mobs, Throw Spines > Energy Torrent > Spines Burst > Throw Spines, mobs are dead, and with energy torrent, they're knocked down for when you enter melee to use spine burst so they don't attack back, then you jump out and Throw spines again. After that, any damage you did take, heal up, and enemies are fairly slowed as well, then mop up the bosses of there are any, or shoot off another throw spines, etc you get the idea.

Very effective, I much prefer spines/fire over spines/DA because with throw spines you are moving around so much, with DA it kinda makes you stay in the middle of the mob too much. Spines/Fire is essentially a defensive blapper.

Although you can still effectively build a Spines/Fire with defense in mind. That's what I did with mine. You really don't need a boat load of recharge to be effective as a Spines/Fire because your AoE attacks already recharge pretty fast.

This is my build that I came up with in the age of boss farming, I obtained about 35% melee defense which makes a huge difference in survivability and Healing Flames still recharges in 12-13 seconds with Hasten.

just because a set is defensive, doesn't mean it gives defense. These terms are completely different. Defense is not taking damage, resistance is lowering damage taken. Defensive sets can do either or both (among other things).
Defense/Resistance.... whatever. I just meant in the general term. Scrappers secondary's is what i meant, whether it's def or res. Sorry i wasn't clear enough that some couldn't understand. IMO, /fire is still weak to most attacks other than fire. If you "need" a heal every 12 seconds... /Regen isn't even that bad.

And i thought 75% was the "soft cap" in resist?? So, if that's the case, you can hit 75% fire resist from fire aura.

As I said, "soft" doesn't mean anything in resistance land. "Hard"-cap for defense is 225(ish?), but effectively "cap" (soft) is 45. There's no general need to be higher, that's why it's called softcap (It's a practical cap). With resistance, there is only the cap, and everything under it. So flagging it as "soft" is a misleading representation of the term.
You are indeed correct about fire resistance, but your terminology is a bit wonky :P

-Soft cap as opposed to cap

On the topic at hand. Fire Armor is a decent set. For farming, it is better than /DA. (imo) It grants you an endurance recovery power, a heal, good resistance numbers, a second build up, slow protection, and a damage aura. DA offers a friggin awesome heal, decent resistance numbers, small defense, control auras, and a damage aura. FA isn't better by much, but the endurance recovery power is incredibly helpful. Also, FA can easily farm the Demon Map (All Fire Damage! ) DA oddly enough cannot cap any resistance numbers.



Your character does not have capped defense. Depending on your AT the cap is between 175% - 225%. Your defense is not teal in the combat window, it can go higher. STOP SAYING IT IS CAPPED! The correct term is Soft Cap.
I enjoy playing in Mids. I specialize in Melee Characters, other AT's usually bore me.

Well, people say softcap everyday and are trying to hit it. My point is still the same. IMO<<< /fire is weak. You don't have to agree, i dont care if you do or not. It's MY opinion. And as for /dark not hitting any caps, the build below is showing a smash/lethal at 75% resist. Odd, and i still gotta remove ripper and replace with something else.

Yep. Eye of the Magus won't be up perminently, and has a long recharge. Turn it off, and everything in terms of resistance drops.

A single small purple inspiration instantly softcaps a toon that is sitting at 35% smashing lethal. They are pretty hard to find on farming maps.
