Soft Capped S/L, Is it worth the trouble?

I was just curious. Having Darkest Night in my DB/ELA build will I really need soft capped defense to S/L? I should say, would it make a significant difference on my survivability? Would it be better to get each of the defense to 30 instead of getting these two to 45? Which do you think would be better overall?

Edited:

So far, one of my builds has
29.5% S/L Def
23.9% N/E Def
21.4% F/C Def

My Darkest Night does -16% ToHit

Thought about getting the PvP IO but omg, that thing is expensive. For good reason I guess but still...

If you want to be as tough as possible, then yes-- it's worth it.

You have no DDR in ELA. My DM/ELA Tank build has to use Darkest Night as an ablative hedge against cascade failure. Remember, if you re fighting even-cons, then you probably don't need soft-capped defense. If you are fighting +2s or +3s, then you aren't getting 16% ToHit debuff out of Darkest Night. Even when I effectively have 57% Sm/L defense through Darkest Night, I will still sometimes experience cascade failure and have to pop a purple to reestablish 45% defense.

The difference is extremely noticeable if you want a Tank build, but you certainly take a hit offensively. I only use my Tank build on Master Strike Force runs, otherwise I'm usually using my SMASH build.

You would be significantly tougher with softcapped SM/L than having defense values spread as you currently do.

personally, I like to think of it this way. If you solo most of the time, and like to run with the settings cranked, then yes, it's worth the trouble.

However.

You are not a tank. Just reminding you. As a brute, your best damage mitigation is through making them dead faster than they make you dead. With ElA, you have a lot of resistance, and I am sure with full fury, DB can hang with the best of em as far as killing off your opponents.

Also, with ElA, you have some soft control built in, between lightning field and power sink, you can keep all but elite bosses and AVs floored on end. So you have less incoming damage.

Dark Armor is like that kid you knew in school that didn't know when to shut up, and no matter how bad he got beaten down, he got right back up again and kept on talking.

Only if you run higher than +0/x8. At +0/x8, you don't need more than say 20% defense, for example.

Depends on who you're up against also. Malta, Knives, Vanguard Renegades, Cimeroran Traitors all are a bit more difficult than say Council or Freaks. I definitely noticed when I got over 25% going up against those groups even at 0/xAnything.

Thank you everyone at Paragon and on Virtue. When the lights go out in November, you'll find me on Razor Bunny.

Darkest Night also gives affected enemies a -21% damage debuff (all types), so with your existing resists, you may be fine as is.
