Dumb Question!
Okay befor I can ask this probably stupid question I need to lay a few fact
out first. 1. First time in the game and so far playe dabout nine hours strieght before becoming even more confused. 2. My Tanker's Primary Power is: Will Power: High Pain Tolerance Fast Healing Secondry Power is Dark Melee: Shadow Punch Smite Shadow Maul And I got the aditional Powers of Hover and Areal Assault. 3. I did the Tutorial and even got the Badge for killing 100 of the baddies in that area. Now the thing is I choose then to go to Miss Liberty and not the Back Street Brawler but after learning about leveing up I was dragged of by friends to do missions being told not to bother about them and was pretty much thrown in the depend and expected to just tank I ahve no idea what to do or how do it. My Question is How do I Tank? What am supposed to be doing? How do I navigate properly and how do I find the differant chat box's? What is this Influence thing is it in game currency how do I get it? Oh and why does Sally look like Nessie from Locke Ness? (Saw her while be dragged about by the place by my friends right before getting slaughtered for 'enth time) It some what embarassing I'm now Level 10 but have no Idea what I am doing. |
First of all, welcome to the game. It will take time to learn everything, but it's a fun game. The nice thing is you can choose either to be a min/maxer or not and still enjoy yourself. The CoHtitan wiki site is a great source of information about the game, including some of it's history. The wiki site should help you with quite a few of your questions.
Additionally, read the "Need help understanding tankers thread". There are some good answers to your tank questions there.
Also, Sally is a take off on the Loch Ness monster, so of course she should look like her.
If you haven't already scope out the Tanker Guide section and check things out there. Start with the General section area, even the older issue guides as things can still pertain to the game as it stands, plus you can see how things have changed over the games lifetime.
Again, welcome to the game.

Also there isn't any power called "areal assault", do you mean the power Assault from the Leadership power pool? Leadership is mostly wasted on tanks since they get rather poor benefit from it, there are much better choices for you.
Don't worry so much about these things for right now though; you're brand new in the game and you've a lot of other things to worry about... new players commonly go through several "throw away" characters before they find one that suits them. If you keep that tanker then yes, you will want to change your build.

My Question is How do I Tank? What am supposed to be doing? |
At your level though you really aren't all that tough so tanking is partially theoretical. With better power selection you'll be tougher and more able to handle the job but tankers generally don't come into their own until after level 22.
How do I navigate properly and how do I find the different chat box's? What is this Influence thing is it in game currency how do I get it? |
At the bottom of your chat screen you'll see a bunch of letters (L, B, T, R etc) that correspond to different channels. L is Local which is heard by anyone nearby, B is Broadcast which is heard by anyone in the zone, T it Team which is heard by your teammates no matter where they are, R is Request which is basically Broadcast in another color. There are also Global Channels which you can join but I'd suggest worrying about those after you've gotten your legs under you in the game.
Influence is money... although the game lore tries to deny this. You earn influence by killing mobs and completing missions, selling items to stores or at Wentworth's (Please note that many pieces of salvage and recipes are worth FAR more to other players at Wentworth's auction house than they are to a store). You use influence to buy things in the game such as enhancements, inspirations and items at the auction house. In my opinion anything you use as a medium of exchange to buy or sell items is money no matter whether you call it dollars, pounds, rubles or influence.
Oh and why does Sally look like Nessie from Locke Ness? (Saw her while be dragged about by the place by my friends right before getting slaughtered for 'enth time) |
It some what embarassing I'm now Level 10 but have no Idea what I am doing. |
But run around the area, do some missions and play around with the interface. Do some exploring and don't be afraid to ask questions. You're new, you're supposed to do these things. I promise you that you'll get the hang of things quickly... and you'll have a lot more fun once you get some of the basics down. Staying solo while you learn the basics will take the pressure off of you.
If you have any further questions please let us know; we're a pretty friendly bunch here in this game. Enjoy your time with us and always remember the primary rule: Have fun.

Looking for a dumb question and don't see any.
Welcome to the game we are glad you joined us! A Willpower/Dark Melee is the oddball of the Tankers they are almost a Solo tanker. The Melee attacks are more single target and the Armor powers don't have a lot of auras. I got a level 50 Willpower/Dark Melee and I love the build but for TANKING he's not the best.
This said a good built Willpower/Dark is nearly unkillable (thought a good anything tanker is nearly unkillable).
Tanks inherit power is Gauntlet causes the Tanker's AoE attacks and auras to taunt every PvE enemy they affect. Their single-target attacks taunt the enemy hit and up to four more around it. Gauntlet has reduced chances of affecting exceptionally high-rank foes like Giant Monsters, and even worse chances of affecting other players in PvP.
Your the Superman type or more to the point the THING type in the game.
Others have said that Tankers don't often get really good till 22. This is very true and you want to grab some powers from Fitness mainly Heath(14+) and Stamina (L20+). Heck almost every build can use Fitness.
Influence and Villain side Infamy are the game main currency. It what you use to buy enhancements and other items.

Hope I have been helpful and once again welcome to City of Heroes and Villains.
P.S. Enjoy the game don't rush to 50 that the best tip we Vets can give. Take time to learn your Powers and AT. Each AT plays differently and each Power set effects how the AT plays. So Mix match and have fun!
Thank you so much for your answers and links to guides, they are
extreamly apresheated, oh and it is arial Assualt I think it's in the
Power Pool under Hover and required to get Fly.
So I should try to get those other Primary Wilpower skills as well!
*Jots this down*
And make a Scrapper to get to know the game better.....Right-O!
It's called Air Superiority not Arial Assault if it's the power I think your talking about. Where you can knock flying foes out of the sky.
And yes you should get the Primary Willpower skills! A Tanker best friend is it's defense your attacks are slower then a Scrapper so make sure you got the Toughness to survive to take down your foes.
IF you like In game I'm @Xavou and I be more then happy to show you a 50 IO enhanced Willpower Tanker.
Welcome to the game!
You've gotten some solid advice here.
While making a Scrapper and learning the game is a fine suggestion... Do not think that you need to at all.
You can learn the game with your level 10 character, no problem. Head to Kings Row and speak to the Detective there to get your Police Band Radio.
Eventually, you'll find some other contacts to give you missions. Kings Row and Skyway City... Oh... head to the Hollows... There are some great missions in The Hollows to get you going at your level!
Also, if you want to make another character... Seriously, you can learn the game on any Arch Type... Don't feel the need to focus on Scrappers... or tanks... or anything. You can learn as Blaster (Like I did) or a Controller or a Defender... any of them.
Since you chose Tanker... there may be a good reason. Something you read about their description that called to you.
Some of us thrive on making a lot of characters... Some of us love just playing one strong concept that calls to them.
Do what feels right to you! And, really (Truly) there is very little you can do to throw yourself too far off course to being successful in this game.
Yep, Air Superiority is the power you're talking about... And it is a wonderful attack power (Nice damage and it has a great chance of knocking your opponent onto the ground) and it is a great choice on your way to getting Flight! So, good choice!
(I don't know if this was answered) Influence is the in-game currency. You earn it alongside XP when you defeat enemies and complete missions. It comes in at a nice pace as you level. You can also make more by selling things on the Market (Wentworth's in Atlas Park, Steel Canyon and Talos Island) and also selling things at the NPC Stores if they're not selling on auction at Wentworths... Check prices between Wentworths and the NPC stores... Especially, for the Recipes you will pick up while defeating enemies).
Don't worry about any of this stuff... Just play, beat up the bad guys, save some innocent citizens, have tons of fun and, after a while, it will all become familiar to you.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
And let us know how it goes!

At some point you might want to respec and drop one or the other to make room for another power.
My Characters
Knight Court--A CoH Story Complete 2/3/2012
Firstly, welcome to the game!
Second - they say the only stupid question is the one you don't ask. All of yours seem reasonable anyway.
You've already gotten good answers to your specific questions so I'll make some general comments.
1) Don't play a tank.
I don't recommend a tank as a first character since you will often have other people relying on you and/or expecting certain tactics. I would suggest making your first character a scrapper. The only thing people will expect of you is to hit stuff. This will give you breathing room to learn the game.
Once you learn the basics, by all means play a tank. I have more tanks than any other archetype. And by the way, I don't know if you had some advice or just got lucky, but willpower is definitely a good choice for an inexperienced tank player.
2) Your tank has too many attacks.
For the most part, you can infer some things about the character by looking at what the PRIMARY powerset is and what the SECONDARY set is. The primary set for a tank is DEFENSIVE. The secondary set has your attacks. Conclusion: tanks should mostly be concerned about staying alive and keeping others alive. Scrappers have their attacks in the primary set - their main (only?) purpose is to hit stuff. With all those attacks, you are compromising your survivability and, as a result, the survivability of the team.
3) Your friends should be explaining things to you, rather than throwing you in the deep end. I mean - "My Question is How do I Tank?" - there has been enough written on this subject on these forums to fill a book (and not a small one). The only way to learn to tank is by watching other tanks. You can learn by watching poor ones and figuring out what they did wrong, but the best way is find a good tank who can explain WHAT they are doing and WHY.
BTW, this is definitely the right section to find good tanks. There's plenty of arguing in here, but most of the people posting in this section at least have a clue whereas the average player in the game probably does not (in regard to tanking, at least).
What server are you on? Odds are that someone in here is on your server and can meet with you in-game and explain stuff. If you're on Infinity, I have a level 50 willpower tank and would be happy to demonstrate tactics and discuss the powers in that set.

Welcome indeed. This game is the best MMO ive played to date.
Id suggest you roll all the different archtypes actually.
Play a tank, blaster, defender, troller, scrapper. Id say this is the best way to understand the game in as little time as possible.
Id be more than happy to roll up a toon with you anytime and have a play session to show you the ends and outs of CoH.
My favorite combo is Faceplant/DebtCap with the TeamWipe Ancillary

I owe people an apolagy as it is Aerial Superiorty not Areial Melee,

Oh and what server am I? Protector.
Might I offer you a suggestion? Willpower is a odd tanker because of the regeneration portion of the build. You may want to try a different tanker primary to get an idea how the resistance or defense based sets work. If you are interested in tankers.
If you are on Liberty I can bring any number of tankers and walk you through it. The most important thing with tanks is to get your armors as tough as possible. If you play a defense based tank, ie ICE tank or Sheild you want to get your defense as high as possible. In the case of fire/dark/Elec/Invul you want to get your resistance as high as possible. The higher those scores the more damage you can shrug off.
With willpower your saving grace is regeneration. You want to get your regen as high as possible which means also getting your hitpoints as high as possible for higher regen rates. You also have a power that drastically increases your regeneration according to the number of foes near your. At higher levels that tank is awesome.
I would suggest a more middle of the road tank that is very durable. Invul tanks are very high resists and easy to get high defense also. They use stacked protection for a combined effect. The most durable tank is Earth tanks only when they get Granite armor. You might as well respec when you get it and get rid of all your other armors because Granite is the only armor you will want to use. Take a bunch of attacks, doesnt matter.
Start again from level 1 and go solo, run around and talk to npc's. Do every mission, look for badges. Have fun and do not be afraid to ask for help. Any of these tanks are awesome, I really enjoy my Ice/Ice tank. His defense is up to about 38% and most of the time he doesnt even get hit. I can up his defense some more with some enhancments and floor the percentage to take a hit. Ice slick really helps keep the damage from slipping through also.
I did say the Willpower/Dark Melee build is the Oddball of the Tankers.
A popular build I seen is Shield/Electric or Shield/Fire mainly to the Shield charge attack followed by an AOE attack. Many Dead foes very fast.
The best AT and powerset to learn the game?
Whatever one you choose.
So long as you enjoy it.
If you happen to find that you're not enjoying it so much... then try something else.
By all means, try some other things out when/if you have the time and the desire to. I enjoy trying out all the different ATs, but it is by no means necessary... Especially if you're having enough fun with the one.
Anyways... I just scratch my head at people making claims to do this. We're all far too different in our enjoyments and personalities to know what is right for someone else.
Find your place and don't take any of our advice too strongly
We may be wrong!
(Make an Electric/Electric Blaster... NOW! Hehe, that's how I started and I loved it the whole time and still love it to this day! It just happens to be the right set for me!)

Just flipping through the forums and I wanted to say how refreshing this thread was to glance through.
Helping out new players can be a blast.
My new Youtube Channel with CoH info
You might know me as FlintEastwood now on Freedom
Reached Level 20 now and focuse do the will power skills espechily the
ones you can Toggle on and off, man it made a major differance, able to
survive and even not end up having to wait to be awakened or heading to
hospital now.
Though I realy do not like the XP Debt thing you have to pay off if you do
go to Hospital, though I have tried over types and while the Scrapper was
fun I just didn't feel right so tie dmaking diferant Tanker type but none of
them felt like a comfortable fit to me so I went back to my Character: Piffit
with it's Will Power/Dark Melee and it felt perfect like a decent pair of jean
that isn't to tight but at the same time not to loose, just right.
I've been using the advice given here trying it out and I have to thank you
all greatly for your kind assitance, even got me a new costume, went for a
Cybernetic Piffit which is looking good the next Clothing slot not sure how
to aquire that I intend to make a Ninja outfit.
Oh and gonna try out the City of Villans half the Brute looks awsome a mix
of Scrapper and Tanker a perfect Combination that drew me in stright away
espechily the the Shield and Battle Axe combo!
*Heads over to the Brute section post haste*
The next costume slot opens at 30 and again another at 40
You can buy Halloween salvage and give it to a witch in Croatoa to unlock another.
Check out http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Costume_...Extra_Costumes for more info.
