This is where my money is going instead of my retirement:

Satin Doll by the amazing, J.A. Cano. You can find him on dA by visiting me and you can visit me by clicking on the image for a larger version. I want the page views!

This particular artist kind of specializes in pin-up art of pretty girls but I dare say that this is one of the best faces he's done and he's done it for me! Muah ha ha ha!

Also worth mentioning that he did a number of things completely different than I would have expected and I couldn't be happier. He's awesome. I honestly think he could make a ton of cash by doing the first one for free, getting you hooked, and then raking it in after you buy commission after commission. I'm kind of insanely curious how a male character would turn out...

Oh, that rod thing she's holding? It's a khatvanga and along with the amulet is the source of her powers. Yeah, I have to RP them in game. I wasn't trying to offend anyone from an Indian or Hindu background but the general idea was the Golden Age trope of how all the mystical artifacts are from a mysterious culture but are almost always used by a whitebread hero instead of someone who might actually know what they are.

Anyway, I have a few more new ones coming down the pike and I'll probably post them here rather than do the individual posts. Some of those seemed to disappear pretty fast.

Who needs a retirement when you can have artz! Unless they seize you comp and you have nothing to view the artz with... that would be a bummer.

Yeah Cano's stuff is pretty slick and this is no exception.

Very, very nice!! Great art and nice catch.

I do agree - his work is uniformly excellent, but he's really come up trumps with the face. It's all in the mouth, I think. I think mouths are quite hard to do, and he's really nailed this one! Congratulations on a top piece!

But I don't think he does faces. It's pretty clear to me that he's tracing images of adult actresses or models and coloring them. I really can't prove it, so if people feel I'm out of line---again I'm sorry. But if you have experience in photomanipulation his work has all the tell tale signs. Don't get me wrong he's very skilled at what he's doing. But it's not uniformly excellent and that's a large part of red flags I see looking at his stuff. He wanders from straight up photorealism to vague or contradictory rendering in the space of one image.
Well I don't know enough to really make an assumption about how he's making the art (or pictures if you prefer) but one reason I was never tempted to get a piece by them was because all the pics do have a slightly porno pose to them... Actually this one is one of the first I've noticed that isn't...

I have noticed inconsistancies in quality in parts but I had just assumed the artist had better references for the people than the clothes or such...

From his previous work, I kind of expected a cheesecake kind of pose and was fine with that because I could imagine the character doing a photo shoot or two with titillation as the main goal. I’m so happy that he picked more of an action pose – I didn’t suggest one because I wanted to work within the realm of his expertise.

When I commission art, I give tons of references and instruction and I’ve seen a noticeable difference in quality between my requests and other commissioners and I always assumed that it was because of the references but it could also be a coincidence of timing and motivation.

You know, you're absolutely right. Let's just forget I ever said anything.

Actually FD, I'm glad you brought it up. While I enjoy the work... I was dissecting it for it's almost over powering slickness. I have a theory that he does of course use reference for the faces. And yes he does paint the entire thing, so there is some of his own style coming through. My theory is that he uses a Poser like program to do the bodies, as sometimes the arms have an odd foreshortening.

Again, I'm not trying to knock him, only trying to understand his process. I think the work is very nice despite the method, and well as long as the client is happy.

In some of the othe pieces I've seen him do though of CoH characters, the rendering on the body seem to be less sophisticated/detailed than the faces he does. I think in the comments for this piece, Jocachi did mention he used a specific reference.

And he links to it. It's also not the exact same pose, only a similar one. At least to my eye, anyway.

I've looked at a few more pieces since I posted before, and, like lots of other people, I can see what FD might have been getting at, and what other people have said, too. I'm also curious about the process - he seems to use several methods - in some cases does he suggest that he traces the outline and then paints in the rest? And like Bayani points out, for this piece he links to an Ed Benes Black Canary illustration that served as reference/inspiration. So he seems to use all kinds of reference in a lot of different ways.

I'm always curious about the processes different people use to achieve their results - sooner or later I'll find a way I can comfortably achieve the results I'm looking for in my stuff! Although it's not a technique I'm remotely competent enough to attempt, I'm sure several people I've come across on DA talk about building poser/daz models and then painting over them; I just can't rremember anyone specifically.

And after all that rambling nonsense, this is still a nice piece with a great retro look. If I didn't know it was digital, I might have guessed he was working with an airbrush - it seems to have that 80s airbrush pinup retro thing going. I'm guessing he uses the airbrush tool in his painting package, which seems uncommon.

But I have so very, very much to learn about digital painting!

Again, my main concern was and is creating any sense of impropreity about the man's work in absence of proof. If someone is curious about the process, you might try asking him. He's on dA and does respond to notes. I know that English isn't his first language but he seemed to get all my detail requests just fine.

I'll be posting something else tonight. Hopefully it won't be as much trouble.

Oh no - I'm certainly not of that intention, Attache - I was only commenting on the variety of sources he seems to use. Different artists' various processes always fascinate me. I'm always on the lookout for tips!

His work is so reminiscent of the airbrush stuff I remember from days gone by. Honestly, if he didn't say it was digital, I'd have easily believed it was airbrushed the old-fashioned way!

And for my money you're absolutely right: that's easily the best face in his gallery.

Nothing wrong with his method, I was just curious...

Great Galaxies! It's Janet Planet!

Artwork by Chris Butler. You can click the image to visit him through my dA page.

I always wanted to get one of my female characters done up in kind of a "cute" style and Janet and Chris seemed like a perfect match. Another home run as far as I'm concerned.

Hmmm, I'm noticing a trend. Maybe I've got a thing for redheads...

Like this piece too - she could almost be from one of the Saturday Morning Cartoons that peppered my childhood!

Plus - lovin' the name "Janet Planet" !!

A few things come up whenever I talk about Janet Planet on the forums so in the interest of nipping that in the bud:

1) I'd seen Rocky Horror but I didn't remember that song "Planet, Schmanet, Janet" when I named her.

2) I didn't recall ever seeing the Schoolhouse Rock video "Interplanet Janet" as a kid but I figure I must have since I've seen every other Schoolhouse Rock short hundreds of times. Maybe it was there in my subconsciousness.

3) There is a Janet Planet mentioned in Alan Moore's run on Supreme but no solid image reference in the TPB. I'd actually bought it but didn't read it until after someone in-game mentioned it to me.

I was just trying to come up with a cool, alliterative space girl name and thought I was coming up with something unique. If you google the name, you'll see that I was quite mistaken...but it really is one of my favorites.

What good names are left that haven't already been used? I'm always surprised that they can even come up with new comic characters given all the names that have been taken.

The references are obscure enough that you shouldn't be worried about those sorts of things. The package as a whole works.

I know I was so upset when I found out Stilt Man had already been created.

That and finding out there is a crappy Liefeld creation called Bloodwulf. Yeah, that ruined my day.
