I get this error as well. Just click OK and it goes away. Should I be at all concerned with trying to fix it?

It's ncsoft's fault you're having problems because of their defective product.....

yet I've never had these kinds of problems......

so what's the more likely reason for the problems here?......

let the speculation begin!

Nope. 32-bit. C:\Program Files\City of Heroes is the location. I don't get it now, because there's no patch, but I'll also note that I was getting it during I17 beta every time there was a patch there (D:\Program Files\CoHTest - yes, that's a different drive on the same pc).

I get this error too, though I don't get the (x86) part of it. I have mine on my D drive, in D:\COH. When I tried it this afternoon, I got the error stating that it couldn't write the coh.exe or cohupdater.exe to the tempfile, or something similar to that. After that, I get the cannot open D:\COH/tempfile, and after that it's the cannot write -1 bytes to D:\COH/tempfile, which just then repeats.

Have my ticket in with support, they needed me to run GameAdvisor, so we'll see if anything comes from that.

Running Windows 7 64bit, core i7 processor, 6 gigs of ram, and an ATI 5850 graphics card.

Just for ***** and giggles I did a search for "tempfile" in the coh folder and there is one in each of the generic_tech_wall_xxx_xxx folders inside the doublefusion/cache/data folder. Maybe is has something to do with these files?

Did you guys that have this problem turn off in-game ads? Maybe try deleting all those tempfiles, see what happens? If not that then try moving or renaming the doublefusion folder and letting the updater restore it.

Removed the doublefusion folder and got stuck at the Downloading File Manifest part of the updater. Good news it didn't cause the error I had, but it didn't work for finishing to install the update either. So I put the folder back, needless to say.

I'm figuring I'm going to need to re-install the whole game. Joy of joys (my most current disc is Issue 6).

Try deleting just the tempfiles. You might also want to give it time to download the file manifest. Sometimes it gets stuck.

I just came to this thread after getting this error message.

I have to point out:

1. Computers other than Windows do not use \.
2. Even Windows actually accepts / just fine internally, it's just user interfaces that tend to use a \. The underlying system calls will take / too. There is a long story there.

I agree that it's an annoying misfeature, and a stupid error message, but the issue here is not that "\ is used for computer file paths".

*sigh* Here we go again with this error. Previously, up until today, it had patched no problem, after I fixed the issue last time. Now, I get the same ole same ole with the /tempfile. Now, my machine has it's fits with me and administrator privileges (I'm always on as Admin), having previously yelled at me for trying to install a flash player update, so perhaps that's the issue again here. Rebooting generally helps, so I'm going to try patching again tomorrow, as it's too late to do anything at this point.
