Regardless of the adjective, noun, or verb used to describe the event, I would still be irritated with the design. i don't like having to start over to gain more power, and such a system would ensure that I would have too, less my frail little ego is challenged by someone being better than me at what I'm doing without any consent to my actual skill.

I do have to agree with the OP, this is not a respec.

This is just rerolling your toon with an ambiguous power-boost and an XP penalty. Not only that, it limits you further by locking away contacts you already did away from you.

It's a masochist's reroll. As others have mentioned, it just makes the game more of a grind, actually REDUCES the amount of content you can do and basically only works to min-max your toon when that's what IOs and eventually Incarnate Levels do for you.

/unsigned.

I dunno. I see it as an "ultimate respec" repackaged with an XP penalty to try to get it considered.

If you want different powersets or a different AT: Just roll an alt.

Just because my dark armor tank got a MoSTF badge, that doesn't mean I've earned it when I respec to a fire/fire scrapper. It's a different bloody character.

I think I'd go for this idea if you did it exactly like you said, except it causes you to lose all your badges, influence, and enhancements, but didn't have the the ridiculous power boost, broken power pool choices, and XP and contact penalty.

I'm sensing a lot of "I don't care how much sense your rebuttals to this idea make, you're ALL WRONG!!!!!" attitude coming from the OP here.

This is, for all intents and purposes, a full respec that acts like a complete reroll, but you get penalized the second time around. The devs flat out said "No" multiple times to ANY kind of full respec. Not "we have no plans to do that at this time". Not "I can't comment on that". They flat out said "It's never going to happen".

Go ahead. Tell the devs they're wrong about their game. I dare ya.

If you want to grind, play a game where the grind is the norm. Don't try to turn THIS game into one where the grind is the norm.

No retcon, no rebirth, no full respec. The dev's didn't say they weren't doing this because of tech or time or resources, they said they didn't want it. You can stomp your feet and go "But I waaanaaa" all you want, but they aren't doing it in this game.

Try asking during CoH 2 beta.

I can see the point to something like this even if I disagree with the OPs suggestion. IMO, level 50 represents the time when your character has realized their true power and mastered it. However, rather than a full respec of powersets why not create a system that offers level 50 characters unlimited free respecs complete with free Mastery Origin enhancements that are only available to level 50 characters and provide a slightly higher bonus than SOs. (35-40% maybe). The build would be viable for 24 hours at which time you either use an actual respec to switch to the new build permamanently complete with the boosted MO enhancements or revert to your previous build.

This would allow level 50s get another boost for making it all the way to 50 and they earn the ability to try out new builds easily before deciding on one that they like. Make this system the reward for competing a Story Arc and you get new content as well!

Aren't 50's already getting a boost based on the hints of the incarnate system? Why do we need more? There are toons soloing +4/+8, AV's, S/TFs. The devs would have to keep programming even greater challenges balanced against these boosted 50's that "regular" toons, who don't choose to be boosted, will not be able to complete or complete as easily.

As for unlimited respecs, you can copy to Test server over and over and respec forever, testing out builds and such, as well as use things like Mids.

The Mastery Origin enhancement idea was just something meant to make level 50s stand out from other high level characters. Icing on the cake more than anything; not necessary, just nice.

It is possible, if a bit clunky, to copy characters over to test and respec them there or even to use Mids just to look at the numbers. The suggestion for unlimited level 50 respecs was simply more of a streamlined way of handling it while thematically representing how a level 50 hero has attained complete mastery over their powers. It doesn't really unbalance the game; just something extra for hitting level 50.
