Val's Demon/Pain Tankerminding Build - comments and advice, please!

Please find build bellow. I found myself horifyingly starved for powers and slots, by virtue of taking all 3 personal attacks from my primary (and, indeed, the entire primary). This is not merely vanity (although it does look awesome) - the -res debuff of "hellfire" effects is so good it hurts!

It did lead to some tough choices, though. Several powers, from Corruption, to Anguishing Cry, to all-important Stamina are under-slotted to provide the IOs. On the powers angle, Soothe and Painbringer, two powers I really would have liked to have, didn't make the cut.

I'm still in anguish over these decisions, so if anyone would lie to propose alternative ways I might have done things, please, please do!

Note that the goals of the build, in terms of slotting, were fairly simple: at east 37.5% ranged defense (enough to soft-cap with a single, tier 1, purple potion), then enough global recharge to make World of Pain perma, and the other long-charge items as close to it as practical, then endurence (this build is already expensive at level 11), then Hit points.

P.S. I can't export color codes? WaaaH!

So far I only see minor tweaks:

Stamina, I know the performance shifter proc plus endmod, plus a generic, gives more than three generics. Does the proc plus endmod give more than two endmods? If not, go two generics, no reason to pay more for one set IO when two generics will be identical. If it does, go proc plus endmod.

World of Pain, Save yourself 1 billion Inf: Use a Titanium Coating Res/Rech instead of the Gladiator's Armor. Both go to level 50 and you're not stacking Glad's in that power, so there's no reason to pay the premium. Not to mention you'll be lucky enough to find two glad's available at all unless you already have the contacts.

Looks like you did a good job though. Nice build! I might make a cheaper version of this myself.

Just a shame you can't slot the purple confuse set. Get a bit of everything you want in one place. Recovery, recharge, and the highest ranged defense in the game. though depending on how going rogue turns out, might be able to run heroside, and swap out provoke for world of confusion. =)

and thanks for the true advice.

does anone nthink it might be wise to ditch assault for soothe, even if I can only leav eit with one slot? how much is 10% when you really think about it? XD

Have you played Pain or Empathy before? Although Pain's a bit more offensive minded, lol

Soothe: Your main heal as a Pain/Emp
Share Pain: Optional, will pretty much fully heal whatever you target in one shot, needs minimal slotting (1-2 recharge)
Conduit of Pain: Optional
Enforced Morale: Optional as well, but buffs
Painbringer: Turns whatever you use it on into an almost unstoppable juggernaut, one EndMod slotted in it can defeat nuke crashes.

You're going for Ranged defense bonuses though, so I don't have much to add besides that. Pain is pretty demanding power-selection-wise, under normal circumstances.

I would have liked soothe and painbringer in about that order. Assault is better than pain-bringer, no question - 11% to 8 team members and 7 pets is a much greater addition to damage than 37% to any one person, and although the regeneration is nice, any worthwhile tank will have had to plan to survive whatever you're doing without counting on the presence of a /pain mastermind, unless you're part of a regular supergroup team.

Whether I should take Soothe and drop assault, though, still keeps me up at night (literally, one time - i need help! XD). What i probably will do is simply wait and see whether I find myself needing it at high level. After all, in theory, people should be trying to damage /me/ not my team-mates, but no agro management is air-tight, especially not with pool-power taunts, so one never knows when an errant pet (or team-mate) may need saving. If I find this situation is common enough at high level I'll definitely change yup the build and forgo the 11% damage buff.

Keep in mind, these are personal opinions, but here are some suggestions:

Pain Domination - Okay, first off, you left most of your support tools on the floor. This is a mistake. At a minimum, you should work in Soothe (single target heals will save you're pet's bacon very often. And the longer they stay alive, the longer YOU stay alive.) Enforced Moral (Heh, you think your pets won't get Mezzed? Your first encounter with Lost or CoT bosses should be quite the eye-opener) and Painbringer (+Regen, +Recovery, +Dam? This plus Hell on Earth on your Demon Prince is probably the main reason to TAKE this combination!)

Personal attacks - While the Whip attacks are much more useful than other Mastermind attacks, taking all three is a bit much. Especially when there are much better powers from your secondary that you SHOULD be taking. I would personally at least drop Lash. Maybe even Corruption.

Slotting the attacks - Um... you do know how anemic that a Mastermind's personal attacks are, right? The ONLY thing these attacks have going for them is the Resist Debuff. You don't need to slot these up so much. If you MUST take these attacks, I wouldn't have more than 3-4 slots in them.

Provoke - You went to a lot of effort to make what looks to me to be a semi-Tankermind. In my experience, /Pain doesn't make a good Tankermind.

Leadership - You know, all these buffs look good on paper. In practice? Your pets aren't going to stay within you Leadership range. To be frank, these are something you should be investing in only when you've got the room and slots, AFTER you've worked the vital powers in.

IO choices - Woof. Nice to know you don't plan on cheap. Now, I'll admit, I'm unusual in this regard - I never plan for slotting Purple sets. While the bonuses are great, I want a character that comes together before level 47. Furthermore, you're planning for slotting Gladiator sets... which indicates that you have the patience of a stone statue. Good luck getting them, though. Might I suggest planning a build that doesn't involve such high-end gear? Set the IOs to 30 or 35, and work out from there. If you can't get a build that you would play with that, you should go back to the drawing board.

All just my opinion, of course. Take with a grain of salt.

Mmm, I think you're right about soothe. I will probably ditch the assault for it. As you point out, those toggles are a lot fo end to run for what they do. I do need maneuvers, and tactics (with its set), though, to reach the defence threshold. I supposeI could go back to flgiht and get 2 copies of BotZ to make up the difference, but don't you find tactics is worth it, at all?

Slotting up perosnal attacks is mroe for the set bonusses than for the extra damage. The damage is just nice. I mgiht as well be doing it as opposed to /nothing/, after-all.

I can't say I agree with you about painbringer though. It would be nice to ahve, but again, I'd rather have assault if I ahd slots to spare, and I'd certainly rather have the -res of the personal attacks. If I weren't planning on absorbing the bulk of the agro myself, the +regen component would be more useful, but I just don't see it as a must have for this build.

My patience (and my budget for gold farmers, when patience runs out), is as close to infinite as makes no difference. Influence is no object. But I appreciat ethe concern.

Incorporating your suggestions, my current build is as follows (may change if I decide ot replace leadership with a 2nd travel pool):

Inspiration!

I realized the other night that if I wasn't too particular about enduring horrible, horrible agrivation, I could always drop super speed and simply rely on Ninja Run, and free u some space in the build. What I arrived at was the following.

My one remaining tortured internal controversy is whether tactics, or Pain-bringer, will be more useful to me over-all. Thoughts?

Oh, and thanks to all. the suggstions have been fantastic! I really appreciate it. This is the only game I've played where you can really ahve a thread like this since UO.

Val straight and simple, I would use my build that I posted and was tweaked then trying to redo. I think my build layout is much better with the tweaks then yours is. The defenses in that build are much higher.

You have provoke but do not have the defenses to back it up.

You have many PvP sets which only offer you these additional bonuses in PvP. Are you looking to PvP with the build ? Then I can see where the Resistance numbers are much better, but again even for PvP you can get a better build.

Since money is not an issue, then I would work with my build posted and kick up the Inventions to better ones. Again mind you color does not mean they are always better. As it depends on what your trying to do.

I would swap out provoke for Painbringer at least.

I don't think you need all the attacks from the demon set. Honestly I think 1 of them is fine as you will be busy controlling the pets, since they run all over the place regardless of which type of Mastermind you have.

I will say your Accuracy bonus is nice, but I do not know how that transfers over to the pets. I just don't have that knowledge regarding invention bonuses and pets. If they do its great. Then I would just pay whatever is needed to max out your defenses but still trying to keep that accuracy bonus for the pets. Then you will be golden.

Plainguy, I do not see a build posted by you. I've looked twice. Am I going off my rocker, or is something wrong? O.o

Incidently, there will be a PVP version of this character, but that is not this build. No sane PvPer builds for defence, for one thing, and no sane PvP mastermind excludes Teleport Foe, for another.

You want to slot stamina with the performance shifter proc and endmod. I finally found a decent post with numbers, and the proc alone is worth more than both your endmods in stamina.

That's not quite right.

That post is talking about Physical Perfection, a power with a much lower base than Stamina. Mids shows the difference between one level 50 EndMod IO and two as being ~0.17 EPS. So at ~0.2 EPS, the proc has a bit of an advantage, but not too exciting a one. It certainly doesn't provide more than both slots in Stamina.

Hmm. Right you are. I will certainly do that. Ideally I want very much to find a third slot for Stamina and have both. I just can;t fathom where I could take it from.

Wait, yes I can. It means lowering my beautiful, beautriful recharge bonus, I can. By rearranging Soothe, I came up with the following (It also incorporates Enforced Moral instead of Assault - still not sure about that choice, but I'll decide by thirty whether I agree with Plainguy about it or not).

As always, thanks all!

P.S. Ninja Run is the best thing ever! I dont miss a travel power, even in Grandville!

Physical perfection provides .125, stamina .2, so physical perfection is abit more than half the value of stamina.

Quote:
Slotting endmod over +end in PP is shooting yourself in the foot. PP gives +12.5% base, so 3 end mod slots will give you an additional +12%. That's +0.22 EPS with 110 max end. One +end proc is almost as good (~+0.2 EPS) and you save 2 slots.
Three end mod in physical perfection = .22. So three endmod in stamina = slightly less than .4 since stamina is slightly less than twice the base.

Now that means each one in stamina is worth... less than .2 and the proc is worth .2 anywhere.

Mids actually shows Stamina's base as exactly twice that of PP. If you're saying that's wrong... you'd better come out and say it.

A third L50 endmod IO doesn't provide much anyway, thanks to ED. The first two both add around 0.17 EPS. A third only gives a paltry 0.06.

So, the proc is way better than a third endmod in stamina. Numerically it's better than the first or the second ones too. But it's not amazingly better.

It is also, Ive always thought, worth remembering that that proc has the disadvantage of randomness, as opposed to a simple recovery boost. .2 is simply an average. Sometimes, it might happenf ar more often, and sometimes far less. It all works out in the wash, so to speak (or so the statisticians tell us), its entirely possible that at a time when you actually NEED it it won't be there. a flat %recovery bonus is reliable.

On the upside, the proc is immunce to -recovery debuffs. So if you are on a blaster and use a nuke, ED capped stamina won't do you any good, but the proc keeps going. Same with the recovery penalty after being rezzed, or when enemies shut you down. I like the proc for that reason alone and the fact that it works better over time is just gravy.

Much less important on non-nuking characters like this one, but I still like it.

I didn't eye your new build yet but wanted to link my thread. I think between the 2 threads players should be able to create a decent build for a reasonable amount of money.

Edit
Looked over your build, again I love your Accuracy bonus. I know you have the funds. I just don't have that type of bank roll. I'm a cheapskate.

Your ranged defense is good. I think the Tankermind experts need to step in and just address your defenses. I will also add your Resistances are decent also. Again I have issue with your defense.

Further does that accuracy bonus convert over to your pets ? I do not think it does.

I can see you using provoke and taking a nice hit which might be very difficult to heal out of.

I have Hover which really helps out some with the defenses. Also I have Mace Mastery Scorpion shield which is DEFENSE and not resistance

From I was told in the past when asking about specing my storm rad defender. I was told always spec for Defense.

I pretty much stuck to that rule for many of the toons. I have been also respecing a bunch of old toons since I came back and regardless of what type of toon it is, the same comments come up of specing defense or at a minimum ranged defense followed by another main or types when possible.

EG I have a Dark Electric that I was able to get high in Ranged but could not build up melee or AOE up sufficiently. But I was able to kick up the individual fire, cold, energy defenses up to a decent rate.

I'm keeping an eye your thread because its a good thread to see what a high roller can do with a spec. And it gives me something to work up too if I so choose.

Set bonuses only apply to you, never your pets, MM pets or otherwise (fluffy, singularity, etc).

You want defense first, but ideal is to have both. Defense eventually maxes out, and also some attacks are autohit, and some attacks cause -def. In those cases, and when streakbreaker kicks in or when there are just so many attacks that 5% is still a lot of hits, it is very nice to have resistance to keep you going. But it is a good idea to build defense first. Don't think of them as one or the other. Think of them as working great together.

But you are right to go for defense first. Especially when you're on a budget.

By taking a resistance shield I can add moreto my range defence from the sets, ironically, which si what we're building for here. AoE is a secondary consideration, definately. I wish it were higher. Melee is irrelevent - imobs should ensure it never becomes an issue (Hover can achieve ~the same effect).

Bellow is what I have now. It has higher defence as the cost of lower recharge. Istill can't clsoe the last 1.4% to make it truly soft-caped, though
