Updater error

Posted

Had already downloaded and installed the Issue 17 update this morning but obviously CoX was down. Just checked back into see if all was good and my virus protection (Free trial version of AVG) came up with malware in the COH.exe file. Ok. Fine. That's never happened b4. So I go back to the updater to re-try (did it 3 times) and I get this updater error every time now. I would post the pic, but I can't figure out how to. But the error says -

failed to rename C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\tempfile to C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\cityofheroes.exe.

Any help with this would be great.

You could try pressing PrtSc and then opening something like Paint and doing Ctrl V to paste the screenshot of your desktop in to the program.

Did that. But I can't remember how to upload the paint file to the forums. I've done it once or twice before I believe, but can't for the life of me remember how to now.

You have to host the file elsewhere, like Photobucket, and then link the image here.

Hollows, this happened to me too. And I use NOD32, not AVG.

When I patched Test, I'd get the error - 'file cityofheroes.exe - probable unknown virus - file deleted and moved to Quarantine' - (actually it was unknown Neuper, Heurer virus or some name like that). I had to disable anti-virus protection, patch test and then went to play normally, even with protection up later.

It happened again today when patching the live client (had already downloaded it too). Same message, cityofheroes.exe deleted. Did the same thing, it updated, I reactivated the virus/spyware protection and it's all fine now. But if I do a virus can it deletes the cityofheroes.exe file again.

I think the file may have code that resembles malware of something like that.

EDIT: Ok here's what happens when I do a scan of the CoH folder with NOD32 (same for Cohtest which I downloaded 1 week ago, my computer was totally 'clean' before in a general scan). And yes, the program does delete the file, I just unchecked the option to show the screeenie, because if I delete the file and re-download from the updater I get the same error, so it isn't MY file that may be infected, it's the one in the servers we all download:

Alright. I'll disable AVG and see what happens.

Such a newb. Couldn't find the disable tab, so I just restored the vaulted "malware" and everything appears to be running normally now. AVG did recognize the .exe as a malware again, but I allowed it. So we'll see.

My Updater keeps saying I have run out of room (even though there is plenty) on my drive or that I don't have enough user rights (even though i'm running as administrator) . Then when you restart the updater, It starts to 'fix' the cityofheroes.exe and a random pigg file.

This has happened on 2 of my computers now, it WAS just happening on test, now its happening on the live update today >.<

I am now running my laptop to see if it behaves the same

Glad it helped.

The weird thing is, I can enable the protection and run the program normally. NOD32 Smart Security Suite would never let me run the program because it has real time file monitoring, at least it would alert me I'm running an infected file. It only showed up when I updated or when I do a scan like above.

I had this, too, but on a second try it downloaded the manifest, fixed a couple of files, and was fine.

Except for the testing not being done and not being able to get on a server. [rolls eyes]

I am also getting the checksum error and the path in the error message seems wrong - there is a '/' where there should be a '\'?

That's what I get from the updater ('you may be out of room') if I patch with my virus protection enabled.

NOD32 deletes the file and gives a warning, and the updater gives me the same message you get. Only way I see is to disable antivirus protection while patching.

I disabled NOD32 and it doesn't help. I still get the File Error.

That path does look a bit fishy to me...

I deleted the coh.checksum like I read in a sticky and now I get new checksum error.
