Laptop question...

So now that I have a full-time job (hooray! only took a few...long months ), I'm looking at possibly getting a laptop of some sort. My hours are from 4pm-1am and there is "a lot" of opportunities to at least web surf if not play CoH...but...I can't really do that on the company's network (going through a proxy atm)...

So if I do get a laptop I'd have to get a mobile/cell card so that I can use Verizon's phone towers to surf the web/play games.

I was looking at Dell's site but...everytime I 'personalized' a laptop I made the laptop more than $600/700 bucks...not looking for the most 'ub3r' laptop, just something with a mobile card and good enough specs to play CoH (doesn't have to play on high settings either....heck my home PC I play on the lowest settings available soo...).

I'm definitely looking to build my own new home desktop PC but....that can wait....laptops....well, that is more of a 'priority' I guess.....maybe...*shrugs*


Any suggestions on where to look/what would be good?

Also, if you haven't already, check TigerDirect and NewEgg. You can find some good deals on those sometimes.

Not to be mean, but it's not worth getting a laptop if you're strapped for cash. You can get a desktop with better specs for a better to equal cost of an ok laptop.

My HP has been great, but when I do play on it, it is definitely on low graphics and I need to get another fan to put under it or else it overheats. It was great but not so much anymore. Especially with GR coming... wish I could help ya more.

I know several in-game that run on Toshiba's/Satellite Series... myself included.

I play the game almost exlusive on the laptop. The graphics are decent, the sound is great for me, as I usually run with a head set if/when I have sounds on at all, but still decent Dolby sound... I even run wireless 99.9% of the time... (and wonders why the zone loads can my a wee bit slow )...

I use a cooling pad/fan under it (Vista and LT batteries are well known to get warm... I miss my windows XP actually)... I also benefit from running wireless keyboard and mouse...

As far as suggestions... the specs constantly change but the newer is not always the better and if you are on a budget, you can get a decent LT to play the game at decent levels of graphics...

Micro Center is a GREAT place to shop IMHO and they offer a clearance section, refurbs (with warranty and accessable/viewable on the website) and decent prices on the new stuff as well and they typically offer FREE SHIPPING/insurance. There are only a handfull of locations across the US but their website is world wide...

NewEgg is another decent site to start your shopping experience... I seldom shop there, but when I do the prices for what I am looking for are always very compatable.

I play on the highest settings on that. I haven't tried the I17 beta to see what Ultra Mode is like on there, but I'm assuming it will be... unusable.

So anything with more graphics power than that will probably work pretty well, except for Ultra Mode, of course.

Keep in mind if you want to use ultra mode a laptop video card will not be enough. A decent laptop should be fine to run at normal settings, but there are no mobile video cards that will run ultra mode. You may be able to run some Ultra mode options like reflections at low settings, but no shadows or high detail. However, as you've seen, getting a good mobile card will bump the price up to $1000 or more.
