Going from MM to SS brute: What secondary should I pick?

Ever since I have started to play CoV my love has been from MM's and an army of henchmen ready to do my bidding. I enjoyed a small break with my SoA and then went right back to testing out MM builds. Needless to say I'm beginning to get a wee bit tired of the same style of gameplay. Now I'm looking to make a brute.

I've never been swayed much by Super Strength, but after lvling to 32 on my thugs/dark I can say I am truly impressed with SS... and now I want to make one.

I'm considering SS/WP as this is quite popular, but how about SS/Stone? Rage overcomes the -dmg of Granite and the -rech and -speed can be worked around. Pre-38 I think its clear which build will be easier to play but in the end, which should I consider?

/Stone is not the best pick for a first time brute IMO. As you say the -dmg is easily overcome by fury, but -rech is not that easy. At best, you'll have it at about zero with your endgame build, and before that... well, you won't attack much in Granite.

I'd really recommend Willpower, you'll have the least hassle with it. If you'd like a more active playstyle (WP is fire and forget, turn your toggles on and that's it), I'd recommend Electric Armor as it's rather friendly to play with a self heal, good resistances across the board and absolutely no endurance problems. It's only real weakness is that it's somewhat squishy vs S/L, but get Tough early and you'll be fine. However, a SS/ElA can be tiresome to play sometimes because you need to closely watch both your green and blue bar, as well as for rage crashes. It's a very powerful combo otherwise.

If you're not fussed about playing an "easy" set for your first time as a brute, pick any secondary, really. Perhaps be wary of Dark Armor since it can be a bit tricky to manage (very endurance intensive if you don't slot and play it properly) and Energy Aura since it has somewhat lowish numbers.

In a toss up between ss/wp and ss/sa, I would go willpower any day. Willpower has versatility that stone lacks. Sure, both can be built on the high cost end to be complete beasts, but willpower takes the cake. This is just my personal opinion, but after everything is said and done, having QR, insane Regeneration, decent resists and good defense, and not looking like a rock quarry is more on par with my playstyle. Of course, stone armor lends some fun concepts, but I think willpower is more flexible in just about every area.

Words to the wise aren't necessary- it's the stupid ones that need them.

Thanks for the comments. I'm not worried about complexity, I've been playing CoX since the original beta and have a pretty good grasp of the game mechanics, not to mention I've played multiple scrappers and tankers and a few early 20ish brutes here and there. Just wanted people's opinion.

For electric armor, how does the lack of +def affect its ability to take on large group spawns?

I would go with SS/WP if its your 1st brute, its pure awsome right out of the box. SS/SD is also one if my favorites even though its not as tough as WP without IOs. If you got the cash I so go with SD as its not too hard to get to the soft cap and you got a **** load of LotG spots, not the best end though

I find that elec does rather well even though it doesn't have any def, specially with energize now.

Hmm, I have energize on a broadsword scrapper but its not slotted yet. Would it be possible to farm with a SS/ElecA brute?

yes

actually, i just took a 50 ss/elec out of retirement
haven't played him in over 2 years

i just io'ed him out with about a 3 billion build, finished it yesterday
he did great soloing rikti missions last night (+2/x8)
haven't pushed him above that yet, but i think he will be able to handle more

it seems on a farming scale, he will be better than my ss/stone, but not as good as my ss/sd

i've been farming Rikti +2/8 with a elec/elec build set for recharge and Aoe so no defense without much difficulty. It does cost a lot to make /Elec a good farm option but once your there it's very fun to lay with.

It really depends what you want to farm.

Currently I have two SS brutes.

My first is an SS/Inv. He's coming along nicely, but he's kind of at that intermediate stage (mid-30's) and is going to require a bit of IO'ing before he's nice and durable.

My second is an SS/Shield. Although I don't really care for clicky-mez protection, it's actually working out QUITE nicely and the combination of Fury + SS-Rage + Shield-Against All Odds makes for a damage monster. Once he works up to Shield Charge, he's going to be an AOE monster.
