I am about to make my 1st tanker since pre-issue 5. I am looking for any advice to maximize my build. I am going for a balanced def/aoe/recharge tank.

Hi- only my 3rd post so wont pretend to be an expert but willing to share my thoughts....assuming this is PVE tank.

1. I think war mace would work nicely with shield since so many of the attacks have built in damage mitigation with knowckdowns and disorients.
2. I would question some of your power choices (not to say you are wrong but just as a consideration).
a. Lack of Fighting Pool. Some people do just fine without tough/weave but I think it really is helpful on a shield tank to boost def/res values. Have you considered boxing, tough, weave?
b. Stealth. I like stealth pools a lot but I am not sure about them on a tank since a primary function of a tank is to grab and keep aggro. Secondly the defense values drop a great deal after you launch your first attack.
c. Travel Power. I would chose combat jump and super jump. You have res immobilization from Comb Jump and Super Jump is faster than flying. If a flying tank is part of your concept, I am sure you can make that work.
d. Speed pool. If rechard is part of your objective, I would consider hasten. This will help you get back some slots like the ones you have in active defense and etc...Plus shield and crowd control firing quickly is a good damage mitigation strategy for you and your team. Also, you will be able to use perfect zinger in taunt vs mocking beratement for the recharge and get some added defense.
e. Build Up- I would take that power and slot it. Some nice IOs with nice values when you 6 slot if you can spare the slots.
f. Epic Pool- personal choice, but I would say take a look at the earth pool too. With Stalagmites, and Salt Crystals you get 2 nice AOEs that can mitigate damage, and drop def by -15% each of your targets.

Slotting- I have ideas for this that looks different that what you have but I think my reocmmended starting point would be to look at power selection again first.

A few additional thoughts.

A. ORACLE is correct: Stealth's defensive bonus will drop by 50% once you start fighting, if I recall the numbers correctly, dropping you just under the soft cap on Ranged/AoE. So instead of 6.28% you should expect to see 3.14% once you're in a fight.

B. Blessings of the Zephyr set bonuses are being reduced in i17 so you will only be getting a 1.25% bonus to your ranged defenses from it. If you wanted to you could take the second slot from Fly and move it to Jawbreaker. Slot Jawbreaker with Mako's to get the 3.75% Ranged bonus that you won't be getting from the two BotZ's.

C. The Numina's unique will give you continuous bonuses if you slot it in Health instead of SoW.

D. You'll probably chew through your endurance fairly quickly with the slotting you've got on Crowd Control. Oblits are great for slow recharging powers like Shield Charge, but you're not getting enough end redux on CC with the amount of recharge you've got going on. Slotting Multistrikes would help with that, plus would help keep your AoE defenses very close to being soft capped after you start fighting.

Thank U for the advice Oracle. I like some of your ideas. And great tips Rangle. I will make changes
2a. I did mess with the fighting pool in mids but it left me with little attack powers early so I took it out.
2b. Stealth is a personal choice for soloing(when i cant get a team) on those find/click the glowy missions so I wont have to fight though them. In fact i will duel build and put hasten in one and stealth in the other.
2c. I am lazy and get distracted by phone calls and such. So I love fly.
2d. I love this idea and will duel build with stealth and hasten.
2e. I have to see what power would replace for build up if I duel build with stealth & hasten.
2f. That also sounds like a good idea.

Dual builds are fine if you want to go that route, but I think a Stealth IO is a much better option. Saves on a power pick, costs no endurance, and doesn't affect your movement speed.

And I'll second the suggestion for Build Up, not only is it useful it itself, but 6 slotted with Gaussian's you get a 2.5% defense bonus to all positions.

I also agree with Rangle about Crowd Control; IMO having two attacks slotted with Oblit is asking for trouble, and CC doesn't need high recharge the way Shield Charge does. Multi Strike is a good choice, or since you have less Ranged defense than the others (and will have even less when the BotZ change goes into affect) you should consider slotting Eradication for the Ranged defense bonus. (1.56% for 3 slots) I recommend 3-4 Eradication and 2 Scircocco's Dervish, Dam/End, Dam/End/Rchg to be well slotted for end reduction.

Also, MoB and Deflection are underslotted for end reduction. Just swap out the Def/Rchg for a Def/End/Rchg and you'll have enough end red and still be over the ED cutoff for defense.

Though I usualy take Air Sup instead of Hover, I'm with you on Fly--almost all of my tanks are flyers.

I haven't had time to really break down your latest build nor to make suggestions, but if I recall it's not soft capped to anything anymore. Getting to the soft cap will help immensely.

For some reason I have a bit of trouble with the new mids, I've re-done the build in the older version so hopefully it'll work this time, added in purples. Sure someone can come up with something better but in your original build you wouldn't be at softcap.

Here's a tweaked build.

Note that I set it for one person in Phalanx range. I assume you'll be teaming a lot, and it's very common to get a scrap or a kin or somebody in the furball with you.

Even without anyone in phalanx it's still softcapped. I tossed in lots of procs for moar damages, too.

This would be all kinds of fun.

Just a FYI from someone with two Mace tanks:

Skipping Shatter=bad idea
Skipping Clobber=very, very bad idea

Clobber is the most damaging attack in the set, and is a guaranteed stun for minions and lts--bosses if you stack stuns. You really, really don't want to skip it. Shatter is the second most damaging attack and has a cone wide enough that hitting 2 or 3 foes at once is not uncommon. It's not quite as much of a "must take" as Clobber, but I'd certainly never build a Mace tank without it.

I can't seem to view the build you posted up, what were the defence lvls you managed for it? Using the powers you took most I can get without sticking in pvp IOs is 47 melee, 45 range and 42 AoE but it's down to about 32% recharge.

Yeah I've tried it, got 2 copies of mids on my comp, previous version and newer one as it encounters a problem when I try and update the older version. Had to download the newer version on another comp and transfer it over because it just failed each time I tried on this one.

Yeah seems to be pretty wierd, when I copy the data it just opens the first build I put up for you. Just read through what sets you put in the powers, noticed that you left out the steadfast proc, that would boost your def by 3%, will slot into the one with shield power

That one worked, yeah looks good, main problem is end management on it although I'm not sure of the consumption of /mace, can probably get away with it if you're teaming as you're not gonna be the main damage dealer anyway and can afford to just taunt and get a few seconds breather for it to recharge some more.

Depending on how you've built with any of the above builds and who you may team with whilst exemping down, Active Defense duration may not meet the recharge duration. Exemping down for a TF, only to run in and get held isn't very tanker like.

I have been running active defence with one rechange in it since level 10 with 1 recharge and it is only down for 5-10seconds without any IO's yet.
