City of Wrecks my computer

Hey there, couldnt find a section that this kind of question really fit in, so i am posting it here.

Anyway, recently City of Heroes/Villains has been damagaing my computer. Last Sunday i logged on to attend a Rikti Ship Raid, but upon starting CoX up, the resollution on my computer went crazy, and everything turned ginormous. Restarting the computer didnt help, and instead of the boot up screen i was greeted by a distorted bootup screen consisting of lots of blocks and lines, my computer didnt boot up and i got a black screen.

After 5 days my computer eventually booted up but the resolution/display was still huge. The Windows Control Panel reported the resolution was fine, when clearly it wasnt. I reformatted my computer and that fixed it.

I just reinstalled CoX and updated, and the same has happened again, but without the lines/pixils/failed bootup. What is CoX doing to my computer?

All drivers are updated and i have been playing other games just fine. Im using Windows 7 32bit with 3GB of RAM and a NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS. Graphicly i run games on max settings and they run smoothly.

First, Tech forums >>>

Second, sounds like a video card issue, like it's fried. When did you install it? When's the last time you blew out your computer with some compressed air? Do you know if the fan on your video card is still working?

The fact that you were in a Rikti Raid when it happened makes a good vase for some thermal damage to the video card. Not only are you talking about the client itself, but you're talking about one of the most GPU-taxing events in the game, where multiple Rikti are bing rendered at the same time as several heroes and villains, each using costume pieces with who-knows-how-many polygons and vertices being rendered simultaneously.

Also, just for reference, what other games can are you playing on your computer without incident?

I think my first suspicion would be a dying/damaged/overheated graphics card.

Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.

Definitely check out the Tech Issues and Bugs forum for this kind of thing. Those guys know more of this kind of thing than us.

However, I highly doubt that it is CoH that is doing this, and more that your Graphics Card has gone kablooie.

You need a new video card. Your card is on the low end of the 7900 series and I seriously doubt that you ran "max" setting with no issues, you probably had heat build up that was damaging your card from running "max" setting.

You should look for a higher end video card and that means paying attention to the heat sinks on the card and making sure that you have a good fan. Also don't forget to get a power supply that your card calls for and make sure your case is well vented and has good air flow.

I cannot stress how important it is to make sure that when buying a video card a person follows the instructions to keep it running. Like everything electronic out there, nothing lasts forever and that applies to video cards and the cheaper you buy one the more likely it is to break down on you after a year or two.

There was a recent nVidia patch that ran the risk of overheating the graphics cards.
