Claws/ EA v Elec
1. Luckily, anyone swinging at you will make your fury bar go up- regardless of whether the hit lands or not. Defense based secondaries are not penalized for being untouchable. You might run into some issues occasionally with EA compared to Elec Armor for generating fury because Elec has a taunt aura and EA does not.
2. You don't have to build to the softcap for sl in order for elec armor to be effective. The resists are pretty decent, and with energize being the new kid on the block, you might find building to high 20% to low 30 % is more than enough mitigation to make you last. Sure, Energize isn't up as often as healing flames or dark regen, but it still helps a good bit for keeping your staying power.
I think the claws/EA would excel in soloing. Claws/elec would do well in teams, particularly with buffs from a mm or corruptor.
Words to the wise aren't necessary- it's the stupid ones that need them.
"You're right...I forgot...being constantly at or the near the damage cap is a big turn off. Definitely not worth it."

Going by the WM/EA post below this one (currently) I think it is safe to say EA probably is not your best option.
Though I have been looking at /elec and it does seem like you can get rather nice resists with your basic shields and top out your energy resist.
Charged armor, Conductive shield, Static Shield and grounded (with 3 res slots):
Smashing: 41.6%
Lethal: 41.6%
Fire: 41.6%
Cold: 41.6%
Energy: 90% (well more like 100%, but 90% is the cap)
Negative: 35.7%
Toxic: 0%
Psionic: 41.6%
With Power Surge on you can max everything but Toxic (83.2%) and Psionic (41.6%). Assuming you 3 slot its resists.
My only worries with /Elec are:
1. If you take Aid Self you will defiantly get a redraw, which kinda sucks.
2. Will Power Sink or Energize cause redraw? not a big issue really...
3. When in Power Surge mode with you be running around with your claws visible and nothing else? Seems like that would look kinda dumb looking. Again though not a huge issue.
I have an ElA and an EA brutes. Their overall performance are pretty similar. Both power sets have great endurance recovery, which can allow a lot of heavy toggles.
For EA, make sure that you like the stealth, and you're ok with your toon being transparent. It's pretty standard to soft cap typed defense for EA, and it's not hard to do so. Beyond this, it depends on what you usually fight. There are problems with defense debuffs and heavy hits from bosses and AV. So, you can add aid self, darkest night (for the damage debuff and an extra layer to floor mob's to-hit when there are defense debuffs) or something to increase your HP (either from IO set bonus, accolades or overload). If you plan just to fight council paper mission, capped defense will do the job. Otherwise, you've to use more thought to make the character tougher.
Energy Aura feels less squishy (my opinion) and has the best soft stealth in the game due to a mechanics oddity*, as well as one of the best godmodes, while being easy to softcap to typed damage and having an endurance drain that allows easy running of Fitness powers. Elec Armor provides more AoE damage and has a more reliable heal, plus it makes you nigh-immune to energy damage and Malta Sappers; it would also allow you to play a reliable sapper yourself if you were using Elec Melee, but on its own it kind of falls short in that department. I have one of both. I can't think of either set having particular synergy with Claws, except maybe Spin + Static Field providing a high amount of AoE DPS.
*(To clarify, the stealth radius does not suppress in combat. This means you can engage spawn A near spawn B and spawn B will not see you even as you're fighting. Mobs within the same spawn are still alerted to your presence.)
Howdy.
I'm thinking of making a Claws brute but I'm having some trouble choosing the secondary - elec or energy.
I've never played either sets but one thing is certain - I like defense. So here's a few points I'd like you to help me with:
1. How fast can I get a full fury bar, assuming I've got soft capped defense to X type of damage? Do the missed/deflected attacks count to build fury?
2. As ElA, I assume I can play with IO sets and get some nice defense aswell? Maybe even soft cap it to S/L or some other kind of damage (without ruining my powers).
I think this is it. I guess I should make 2 brutes, one for each secondary but I'm tight on character slots and I don't feel like buying additional slots atm. So, do share your experiences with either secondaries. Falsey appreciates it.
