I had my eye on an XFX Radeon HD 5850 for a bit now and just about got the 350$ together when it seems to have gone out of commission on Newegg.ca. It's around this time that I noticed the Radeon HD 583X. I'm not considering the GTX 285, but I know the 5850 trumped the 285 in benchmarks.

I've done a quick google search and can't find any benchmarking for the 5830 series, so I wonder is this card worth my time?

Or should I shop around for a 5850 again. I do prefer to shop Newegg if at all possible now that they serve Canadians. Also this card is about a hundred bucks cheaper, so I could get some other goodies.

Looks like the 5830 series only fairs slightly better than the 260 from Nvidia. More importantly it doesn't fair much better than the 4890's which come in 50 bucks cheaper.

Hope this was a useful venture for someone. If I'm overlooking anything feel free to enlighten me

Nope, that's what I was seeing as well. Save up another 100 bucks and get a 5870.

Funny thing is, I prefer to buy XFX, and now I can't seem to find much at all in terms of Radeon cards from them from a Canadian retailer.

Personally I don't think the HD 5870 is worth the extra bucks (10-15% improvement for 33% more $), but the price between the HD 5850 and HD 5870 is narrowing (due to lack of nVidia competition) so it's not as bad but still.

And you did notice that the HD 5830 is priced a bit high for a modest (10-15%) improvement over the HD 5770 considering it costs over 40% more.

True both the HD 5850 and 5870 are drifting upwards from their $299 and $399 MSRP. Yes the HD 5850 was suppose to be $269 MSRP but that lasted about 10 seconds when nVidia didn't slash the price of the GTX 285 while the GTX 275 simply vanished.

As long as nVidia isn't willing to play, ATI (card manufacturers actually) can keep ratcheting up the price until the market cries Uncle. And if the current rumored prices for the GTX 4xx cards are true, their still won't be a reason to start lowering them anytime soon. I'm afraid the golden era of the late 2008, early 2009 when memory and video card prices were cheap is now history.

But the 5870 goes to 11.

You're welcome, Healix!

I thought about doing just that, ZM, but until CHV shows considerable benefit from dual-cards, SLI or Crossfire, I can't see spending the money.

Here.
Well other than being a $600 foot long (the card is 12.2" long) and actually use two fully enabled RV870 GPUs, the GPUs on the HD 5970 are clocked 15% slower than the one on the HD 5870 with memory clocked 9% slower. These happen to be the clock speeds of the HD 5850.

To summarize. HD 5970 is two HD 5870 running at HD 5850 clock speed.

I wish Nvidia didn't suck so hard right now.

Agreed. The 5850 absolutely nails the sweet spot on the price/performance curve.

It's not that it nails the sweet spot as the HD 5830 and HD 5870 aren't priced linearly relative to the performance of the HD 5850. In the case of the HD 5870 that's OK as the top end part is always sold at a premium.

The problem with the HD 5830 is that measured by performance, it's about 1/3rd of the way between the HD 5770 and the HD 5850 but is priced about 2/3rds of the the way between the HD 5770 and the HD 5850, at least at the time of it's introduction. Now that the price of the HD 5850 is drifting every higher every week, it's closer to half way in between.

And it's very easily overclocked. And it has an internal cooling scheme that's very efficient. And even if it gets very hot, it's very resistant to high temperatures.

The Catalyst driver is nice enough to automatically overclock it for you, and my temperature still doesn't go above 70 C even dual boxing on Ultra Mode (I've read a review that it still keeps ticking at 100 C).

And it leaves room for even more Crossfired boards if the next generation can do things these can't. Let the new one become the primary engine and this GPUx2 will back it up.

While I'm most likely to buy a 5850, my soul longs for the day when CB ends and the beta testers cry "the 5770 plays it like a dream at max settings".

I know that day will never come, but a guy can dream.

That would be my dream too since I have a 5770. So far so good though! Without Ultra Mode I have everything maxed and get about 60-80 fps. If I can crank Ultra Mode and get 30 fps I'll be flippin stoked! If not.... I'll sell a kidney and get a 5970 and call it a wrap!

I'd also add that the 5830 is the same size as the 5870. Making it a hard to fit card in smaller cases. It also runs hotter and consumes more power than a 5850 as well.

It's been said that at some point you'll see 5830 showing up on the 5770 PCB. When it does, and if the price drops, maybe it would be an ok card. Until then, no thanks.

Edit: To make sure people understand. Just because they may, or will, start using the 5770 PCB in the future, doesn't mean it'll will change the fact that it will still take 2-6 pin power connectors, run hotter (compared to the rest of the 5X00 line), and consume the same amount of power as it does on the 5870 PCB.
