Fixing Files: cityofheroes.exe repeats forever

Jay, it did the same for me but once it finished i could login with the US version

Oddly enough, it worked for me as well. Took a while to download everything, and I honestly might have flubbed the last hour or so by changing the file name back to the original a bit early, but everything worked out, heh.

JayboH did you "DELETE" ALL the folders in the test folder before you tried to DL from the eu DL connection? There should not be anything for it to try and fix if you did? I dunno? Mine did not try to fix anything after I deleted all the folders?

Yes I started a brand new folder, had to tell it where to go, etc. How many times did it fix the exe for you?

Huzzah, it works...so far! I'mma let this run overnight (DSL is slow 'round here, gonna take about 4 hours) thanks mate, for the workaround.

It frustrates me to hear all of you got this to work for you, it just keeps pausing at fixing that exe that does not exist at 6.5 megs, and starts downloading the file manifest and fixing the exe all over again.

Hey, anyone know why it says (null) after? Is that what it says if it hasn't been downloaded yet?

Yes, there is a .exe file there. Windows default behavior is to hide the extensions for known file types. The cohupdater with no extension showing is the .exe file. It's the one with the icon with Statesman in it.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

It says (null) if it hasn't been fully launched so that it can determine the version number. Once it is finished with all of the download and gives you the NEXT button, it will show the correct version number.

Just to make sure, you aren't using any of the Compatibility Mode settings are you? Right-click the shortcut you use to launch the cohupdater and select Properties. Click on the Compatibility tab and make the only thing checked is Run As Administrator.

no luck so far still got like 20 hours of fixing to do and ncsoft has not figured out why yet

well after talking with ncsoft it seems that my problem might of been hidden files so i delete those it still took 9 hours but at lest i now have it on another drive and can update it without having to reinstall it again.

I delete the entire CoHTest folder and start from scratch and I get this crap, I know it isn't anything regarding hidden files.

I wasn't looking at the fixing files part, I was replying to your comment that there wasn't even an exe file there, when there was. Had you stated that there wasn't even a cityofheroes.exe file there, I'd probably not have commented at all.

Since you seem incapable of seeing how others may make a small mistake when trying to offer help, I'll back out of this and leave you in peace. I won't make the mistake of replying to your posts since I won't see them.

OK JayboH so you deleted all the folders, did you change the name of the exe to make it DL from the EU instead of the US? It sounds like now you are not doing something correctly because this work around has worked for me and others now. I feel bad you can't log in to test so I want to keep helping you for sure. Can you post a pic of what your updater exe looks like and the path it goes to etc?

That's why I posted the pics, you can see it is the EU updater - the website that shows is totally diff from the US one which has different sections cut against a black background. The white solid one is the EU one.

EDIT: by the way, I appreciate all the help!

They want me to uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials. I have tried this with it turned off, but ok, I know this won't work - how could it? I'm about ready to give up. Why would it stall at 6.5 megs and restart day after day after day because of an antivirus program that is turned off?
