Another Defender blast thread
Lest I appear to be disparaging Empathy, let me clarify: Empathy has the most amazing single-ally buffs around. They just don't have it easy keeping a large group of people at maximum efficiency. I would not turn down an Empathy teammate. (Unless I already had one or two. )

I agree with this in general although I think Empathy is actually a great set for keeping a Blaster heavy team going, as long as you have more than one. Fortitude is a very powerful defensive and offensive buff and a pair of Empaths should be able to keep 6 Blasters permanently forted (heck if they have hasten and AB each other they can theoretically keep them all double forted).
A Blaster is certainly not a "lesser" class. Playing a Blaster solo requires more skill and forethought than soloing any other hero class, and Blasters' contribution to teams is profound. Most Defender primaries (Empathy being a particular exception) can--by themselves--keep a large team of Blasters relatively safe while steamrolling through missions. (My general guideline is one Defender per four Blasters, depending upon primary and whether they're running Leadership toggles.) It is the Blasters' incredible damage capability that allows this.

Obviously other Defenders can keep blasters alive as well or better but Empathy can do it.

I take issue with Defenders who ignore their secondaries calling themselves "purists." If I hired on a Scrapper who ignored his secondary, he would not be a purist, he would be a liability. The same is true for a Defender.

Can you point me to anyone in this thread that has referenced ignoring their secondary?

Erm, you did. At least, to the extend of suggesting to slot for the secondary effect rather than damage, which is basically the same thing in my book (excepting a few special powers such as short circuit).

I highly doubt that draining a few extra points of end from a single target with lightning bolt, or debuffing defense another redundant 15% with some rad blasts, would make up for consistently doing half the damage you ought to be doing. Remember, death is the ultimate debuff. I doubt you'd actually mitigate any more damage in most cases by slotting for secondary effect than you'd simply prevent by defeating foes faster.

Just so long as we're clear that you're using a different definition than I am of the word "ignoring".

While my main two blasts on my Elec/Thermal are slotted for dmg, Short Circuit is slotted for end drain (Eff. Adapt. IO set)...Seeing as how I can usually drain off a spawns end, before they're all dead, and Short Circuits damage is so low...that yes, slotting for secondary effects can be useful.

That said, I really only find that the case for Elec Blast, for the others, like Ice, Rad (you can slot for Sonic's -Res), Energy, it's a waste to slot for their secondary effects.

Hmmm... I don't know if I would call slotting for the secondary effect instead of the damage "ignoring", but I'm not sure I could say it is providing the same benefit overall to the slots. That would be roughly equivalent to slotting Tesla Cage or Cobra Strike for damage. While it would certainly result in an increase, I'm not sure it is the most efficient increase available for that given slot.

I suppose it would depend on the secondary effect, however, and the intended benefit. I suppose Sonic's -Res would be a great thing to slot if it could be slotted. YMMV, I guess.

I stand corrected.

It is definitely true that a Defender's primary powerset is more important (which is why it is the primary), but to claim that you should not be doing damage is ignoring a significant part of your contribution to a team. If you wish to ignore half your powerset, that is your prerogative, but you are not a "pure" Defender, you are half of a Defender.
1) Carry around full Trays of Purple Inspirations.
2) Dont bother with a Defender and stick with a lesser class like a Blaster.
