1. Found it. I had to manually update the registry. At the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cryptic\COH\

I had to manually (that is, type in) the current client version (from the error message when attempting to connect to a server) into the CurrentVersion string value. After doing that, it works fine.

For some reason, my daughter's non-privileged login is not updating the CurrentVersion string value when I run the updater. I presume that it is because it is running with administrative access (i.e., as my own account) and updating the administrator's (my) HKEY_CURRENT_USER key but not hers.

Less than ideal, but at least I know the fix now. Hope this helps someone else.

As noted, the client is up to date. I run cohupdater whenever there is a new patch. When I run cohupdater, I get into the game fine, no downloads necessary. It is only when I run "CityOfHeroes.exe -project coh" that this problem occurs.

Tried this, Pengy. No luck.

The client is still identifying as "1600.2010114.10T" in spite of the fact that we've played numerous times with multiple later versions--and, now, a new issue.

I need to find where that "...10T" is getting kept and nuke it so that my daughter's shortcut works again.

P.S. Sorry for the length of time to reply. I travel for weeks at a time for work.

Dark/?/?

I have had great fun with Dark/Rad. Reasonable AOE (knockback in the cone is annoying, though, with Tar Patch), plus I thoroughly enjoy having a stun in my highest damage single target attack. I play him controllery, though--if I had it to do over, I probably do /Ice Blast. Slow is a preferable secondary effect to -Def, particularly for my playstyle.

I may roll a Dark/Ice after he hits 38. Or maybe swing back over to my still 12-ish level Ice/Dark Corr. (Or both!) Two reasons I like Defenders over Corruptors is the stronger secondary effects and Leadership values plus the "perception" that folks have of Defenders. That blue shield makes me an others believe that I'm doing more for the team. ;-)

----

Summary:
"(rest of path)\CityOfHeroes.exe" -project coh used to work, but now does not. Running cohupdater.exe works fine--it downloads nothing and makes no changes to the game files whatsoever, but the game client does not complain. Exact message when running with "-project coh":

Quote:
Wrong game version, run patcher and reconnect, server 1600.20100114.11T, client 1600.2010114.10T
What file(s) do I need to delete to force the client to update properly?

Description:
My 3- and 7-year-old daughters play on my computer running Windows 7. They play with their own Windows login, they do not have administrative access to the machine, and "cohupdater.exe" will not run without admin access. I will not give them admin access to the machine, and I do not wish to have to go over to the machine and type in my password ever time they want to play the game.

I was able to solve this by moving the game files to "C:\Users\Public\Games\City of Heroes\" and setting up a shortcut to "(rest of path)\cityofheroes.exe" -project coh. No admin access needed, no problem.

After the last patch, the client is misidentifying itself as 10T, but only when I run it with "-project coh." cohupdater is able to figure things out without, but I have to type in my password to make it run.

I am fine with having to run cohupdater and enter my password when there are updates to the game, but it is not something I am willing to have to do every time the game runs.

Any ideas?

Thanks! This makes me very happy. The end discount has made Stamina-less builds viable (though running Dispersion Bubble plus all three Leadership toggles is more than challenging). However, nigh infinite Endurance has been the defining benefit of my Defenders over my Controllers.

Soloing, the change could have a significant positive impact. After i17, I want to go back and take out those same three gray Freaks that took me about a year on my FF/Ice Def and see the diff. Maybe I'll load up the test server and take a first-hand look...
6. I didn't read this whole thread (11 pages by the time I started). Does this damage buff replace the current Vigilance, or is it in addition to it? If "in addition to," then perfect. If it replaces, then does that leave Defenders without an operating inherent on a full team?

Lest I appear to be disparaging Empathy, let me clarify: Empathy has the most amazing single-ally buffs around. They just don't have it easy keeping a large group of people at maximum efficiency. I would not turn down an Empathy teammate. (Unless I already had one or two. )
8. I take issue with Defenders who ignore their secondaries calling themselves "purists." If I hired on a Scrapper who ignored his secondary, he would not be a purist, he would be a liability. The same is true for a Defender.

It is definitely true that a Defender's primary powerset is more important (which is why it is the primary), but to claim that you should not be doing damage is ignoring a significant part of your contribution to a team. If you wish to ignore half your powerset, that is your prerogative, but you are not a "pure" Defender, you are half of a Defender.

A Blaster is certainly not a "lesser" class. Playing a Blaster solo requires more skill and forethought than soloing any other hero class, and Blasters' contribution to teams is profound. Most Defender primaries (Empathy being a particular exception) can--by themselves--keep a large team of Blasters relatively safe while steamrolling through missions. (My general guideline is one Defender per four Blasters, depending upon primary and whether they're running Leadership toggles.) It is the Blasters' incredible damage capability that allows this.

I would like ask where you got your formula for calculating a modified recharge rate. If a power's RECH is reduced by 33% (.33), then it means it will recharge 33% (.33) faster.

[/ QUOTE ]
Hmm...
[ QUOTE ]
Therefore, the formula should be [Modified RECH = Original rate - (Original rate X Boost %)]. So 10 - (10 X .33) = 6.7 not the 7.52 in your calculation which would only be 24.8 % boost. 6.7 is 33% (.33) faster than 10. Better example to illustrate my point is using 100 sec. 33% (.33) of 100 is 33. [100 - (100 X .33) = 67]. 67 sec is 33% faster than 100. Reduce the RECH by 50% (.50) and it will be twice as fast. [100 - (100 X .50) = 50]. 50 is 50% faster than (twice as fast as) 100.

[/ QUOTE ]
Well heck, you're right! Why don't I just three-slot all my powers with Single Origin Recharge enhancements (100%) so they're all recharged instantly!

I tease.

However, you must understand that enhancements that reduce an attribute--like recharge or endurance cost--cannot be a straight percentage reduction or they'll eliminate the attribute--and then go negative!--after just three enhancements. If three Endurance Reduction enhancements caused a 99% reduction in endurance cost for each power, no one would ever need to take Stamina.

Thus, Arcanaville's post is right on the money. Ye Olde Formule:

(Original Value) / (1 + Enhancements) = (New Value)

is quite correct.

So, ignoring Enhancement Diversification for ease of calculation, slotting three 33% recharge enhancements (even level SOs) into a power than normally takes 30 seconds to recharge will subsequently recharge in 15 seconds.

It's pretty easy to see this in action. Slot three single origin recharge or endurance reduction enhancements in a power and see if it recharges instantly or costs nothing to use.
10. The names of the powersets are there, which is really cool, but not the game-mechanical methods they would be implemented. Is that because they are not decided, yet?

Either way, thanks for asking!

11. I'd like MoG more if Revive had, say, five seconds of intangibility associated with it. That way, you could blow MoG, do something glorious--and, of course, get defeated--then Revive yourself and spirit away to lick your wounds. This is in contrast to Reviving in the midst of a mass of enemies (since Scrappers fight in melee) and getting immediately re-defeated.

I think I'll retake MoG in my next respec, just to either relive the frustration or give other folks free kills in zone PvP.

13. This is definitely my favorite Guide on the boards. I have little time to play compared to many (I have a family and commute a long way to work), so my little SuperTeam plays only once a week for a couple of hours.

At the top of your Guide, Arcas, you mention that the prescribed roles of a team are really for the beginners and that experienced players are able to do much more in a team-only environment. Well, we did a little bit of stacking effects, but we primarily focused on everyone doing their role to the best of their ability, almost to the exclusion of all else. For example, our Tanker will get his second damaging attack at level 35.

We're playing a Pentad (one of each Archetype) called Synergy on Liberty, and our roles are well-defined:

The Blaster is Fire/Elec and AoE's minion into a fine powder before stepping in with the impressive Blaster melee attacks. The Electric Mastery's secondary, End Drain, stacks nicely with the Defender.
Our Controller, an Earth/Rad, is the backline healer (when necessary) and crowd control. Earth's Slow and Knockdown effects stack with the Tanker's. As time progresses, we'll also use Enervating Field to churn out even more damage over and above the damage cap.
The Defender is Kinetics/Electricity, and the boost to recharge rate and massive increase to endurance recovery and damage make a huge difference in power selection. Her Electric attacks are slotted up for end drain, and stack with the Blaster's melee attacks, as mentioned above.
The Scrapper, Dark Melee/Dark Armor, is the bosskiller. Dark Melee adds a damage type (dark, obviously) to our output, and DA also adds to AoE damage and crowd control. Accelerate Metabolism, Speed Boost, and Stamina are just able to keep this end-hungry set in the blue. We considered Spines, but decided we liked concentrating on single target damage, allowing the Blaster to rain down on areas.
Finally, the Stone/Ice Tanker is all about surviving anything at all. When constantly teamed with a Kinetics Defender (and having Teleport), Stone Armor really doesn't have any drawbacks to speak of. Ice Melee is incredible for one single power: Ice Patch. But what a power.

Everyone has the Leadership pool - though only the Controller and Defender will slot the powers. Only the Blaster (Fly/Recall) and Defender (Inertial Reduction) have travel powers. (Fly ain't bad when Speed Boosted, by the way.) As much as we wanted to avoid Stamina, the Leadership toggles - which are damn impressive when the whole team runs them, by the way - are too expensive on top on all our other powers to maintain, even with Speed Boost and Accelerate Metabolism. The melee characters will have Stimulant (Medicine Pool) to supplement the Defender's status effect protection, since the Tank and Scrapper already have their own very strong status protection. (And thank goodness for the DA Scrapper that both Increase Density and Accelerate Metabolism lend Knockback resistance...)

We started running our missions on Invincible starting somewhere around level four, and we only bumped it down when going through The Hollows so as not to outlevel the Cavern of Transendence Trial. We failed the Cavern, in large part due to the fact that we just couldn't make things work with the bozos - okay, two bozos, and one good player - we had to pickup to fill out the eight people required. We work really well together, and newcomers just screw us up. Back up to Invincible for the Positron Task Force (yawn, what a sleeper), and now we're Unyieldingly breezing through Synapse.

I am continually surprised at how easily and quickly we do our missions. At the first, the Tanker was the big debt magnet, as the Invincible missions would quickly reduce him to a smouldering heap of goo. We're in our mid-teens, now, and the team has exhibited no major weaknesses, either to a damage type or to a particular mob type. However, the Scrapper is currently Debt King, as his armors are not yet well-slotted, and DA is not particularly hardy in the massive groups we generally deal with. I believe that will greatly improve by the late twenties/early thirties.

I love Super Teaming - it's renewed my interest in City of Heroes, and it's a heck of a lot of fun.

Is there a space somewhere in your pathname? If so, use quotes:
<font class="small">Code:<hr /><pre>/bind_load_file "c:\coh binds\tp_off.txt"</pre><hr /> or (preferably) put you bind file(s) in a location with no spaces in the path, such as c:\cohbinds\

15. [ QUOTE ]
I think I must have things really messed up? I copied the binds over exactly and they worked fine. I added a "r" instead of a "l" to the first of each bind and now I have added a "r" to the second part of each file. Now all I get when I try to teleport is confusion??

[/ QUOTE ]
You have binds left over from before. Do the each of the following commands inside of CoH (no need to use an external file):
<font class="small">Code:<hr /><pre>/bind lshift nop
/bind rshift nop
/bind lshift+lbutton nop
/bind rshift+lbutton nop
/bind shift+lbutton nop</pre><hr />
(That last one may be redundant, but it won't hurt anything.) And then reload your first file, and you should be good to go!

I would be happy if I could just switch it to the right shift key. Which I though would be simple enough but when I change the "l"s to "r"s it only transfers half of the bind to the right shift key. Where is my mistake? Thanks for the help!

[/ QUOTE ]
The second bind in the first file is
<font class="small">Code:<hr /><pre>shift+lbutton "powexec_name Teleport"</pre><hr />(meaning it will activate on either shift key). You need to change that - and the corresponding line in the second file - to "rshift+lbutton...."
