Yeah, claws/ is awesome. Very good aoe or ST, depending on how you build it and you even have two ranged attacks.

claws is fun as hell. awesome ST and decent AoE.
Claws/ is fantastic. It has good DPS, it comes with two ranged attacks, and Spin alone gives it more than enough AoE damage.

Ummmm. No ! dont make one, pay no attention to my uber claw/sr brute sure I can take down a av ! but that doesn't concern you ( we dont speak of brute claws here
) JK. when we brutes got claws i was like what a ripp off ! untill i made one an i was forced to eat every bad word i ever said about claws i dont think i have ever had a better brute. only my elc /sheild can compete wit it

Make sure to put them nice Procs in the claws attacks 
Claws have great ST damage, and great AoE damage. Spin on one FU does more damage than FS with doublestacked Rage IIRC. Only trouble is the small radius, but play smart and clump your foes.
I've seen Claws/Dark scrappers before, and they were pretty solid, especially after dumping a few billion in IOs into the build. You still might want to slot for endurance in some of your powers. Oh, and be sure to slap a few procs into Death Shroud, especially the -Res proc. I just got it for my Claws/Elec Brute, and it really helps to make large groups of enemies drop quickly.

Claws are stupidly awesome. Spin does Footstomp-style damage on a shorter cooldown (in an admittedly smaller radius) and you get it practically before you leave Mercy Island; if you still aren't happy with Spin, you ALSO get Eviscerate and Shockwave later on. Focus is one of the best attacks around, and it also happens to be ranged and have guaranteed knockdown. Followup gives you enough extra damage and tohit to slice and dice whatever, whenever. Seriously, Claws will spoil you.
Rule number six of an empathy defender is NEVER underestimate a blaster's ability to die. I don't care if he has CM, Fort, both RAs, bubbles (both FF and Sonic), and is fighting next to a Storm defender with hurricane on. If there is a way to die in that situation, the blaster will find it.
Even before Brutes got Claws, I had always dreamed about having Claws on them.
And they are everything that I thought they'd be on Brutes.
