2XP Weekend... and leaving
Nice blog , summed up the feelings for about 96% of the players of this game . Hope to have you back in the community real soon ............
It's too bad you can't afford both games. STO and CoX are both great games. You will be missed and hope you return soon.
Excellent blog. You really managed to capture the feelings I, and I'm sure everyone else, has for the game. Side-kicking means you can still get involved with the high level players, even more-so now with super-sidekicking. The teams are friendly, there's little annoyance from people around you (98% of the time) and it's just FUN!
I've been playing STO while waiting desperately for I17 and GR. STO is good, and feels like Trek to me; but a work colleague (Who also happens to be an ex-COX player) made the comment that "No-one in STO talks to one another" and I agree. COX has a community that welcomes in the newbies and trains them up straight away. The other games foster a terrifying level of intolerence, but not COX.
I bought the lifetime for STO because I can see that as a game, it's got legs and a future.
But it's COX I pay the subscription for. It's COX that I will inevitably KEEP returning to. And it's COX that can be held up and used as one of the finest examples of massively "MULTI-PLAYER" online gaming.
He he. Live long and prosper COX. You deserve it!

I've never burned out on this game, but I have taken a break to work on console game and other side projects. (One I wanted to start back in 1997, and here it is 2010 and I STILL keep putting it off. XD)
I don't know what it is about this game that makes me remain with it since 2006, but then again, I won't question it. I just accept it.

ah well, glad you enjoyed your time here, and maybe one day you will be back. we will leave a fire tanker on for you.
I kind of feel the same way. I'm a much less social person, myself, but even I will admit we have the coolest community of any game I've tried to stick with.
But, really, I've tried other games, things that looked good and seemed like they would be fun. None were. I've tried Lineage II and it sucked. I watched a LOT of WoW and I have no desire to try that. I've tried a bunch of "free" to play Korean MMOs and none were worth playing in the long run. Almost without exception, other MMOs are just... Really, really boring!
They LOOK impressive, sure, but they don't ACT impressive. Lineage is a great game to take screenshots from, but it's a terrible game to capture movies out of, because it's stilted, chaotic and really rather spastic. It looks good in stills, but once you actually DO anything in it, it just fails big time. Even WoW, for all its questionable graphic design choices, still looks good, but again - it just doesn't look like a game that's fun to actually play.
And the grind. Ye gads the grind! It's like every MMO ever made was designed to be deafeningly boring! It's like they're deliberately trying to make them as unfun, irritating and time-wasting as they possibly could. Which, given that I've mostly tried Korean ones, may well be the case, come to think of it. But they just aren't fun to play. In fact, as Yahtzee explains in his review of Borderlands: "All those girl things like story and words are all just a framework for the missions." And I don't know why that is. City of Heroes at least TRIES to save face by giving you actual stories that those interested could read into, but most other games don't bother with even as much.
And I'm still galled by that quest a Lineage II blacksmith gave me, to go kill giant frogs in a pond because they ate his iron ore. Ugh!
Samuel_Tow is the only poster that makes me want to punch him in the head more often when I'm agreeing with him than when I'm disagreeing with him.

Nicely said.
I enjoy the community here as well. After falling in love and moving 700 miles to my new life (My wife and I met playing CoH) I have found that lately CoH is the majority of my social life because I make friends slowly and don't know that many people in my new city yet.
The community accepted me immediately upon my arrival in late 2005 and has never let me down. I have no plans on leaving anytime soon because of that, if nothing else. I even went so far as to make sure I have $15 set aside every month to make sure I can keep my subscription up.

Guys I gotta say, I really enjoyed 2XP weekend and seeing all the new faces that came back.
In light of that, and since my account expires on March 16th with no way of affording even a time card or monthly fee, I thought I'd take the time to share a blog I wrote regarding my experiences with CoH. Consider this a bit of a love letter to the community.
