Double XP and the market (again)
Really? Me too! Except for maybe an hour and a half over four days where I made a few hundred million.

Yer funny...come to the market forum and deride people for marketearing....next go to the PVP forums and tell them you played the game instead of playing virtual fight club

I don't get why you guys think his remark is offensive; I play virtual ebay every day and love it. I play the market because I like pretending to be Warren Buffet, except with Monopoly money instead of real money.
Half the time I'm logged into the game I'm not even playing it, just sitting around and chatting. I play virtual architect by tinkering with my base. I play virtual Barbies by making up costumes. What narrow-minded people conceive as "playing the game" (i.e. going into missions and killing stuff) is really a very minor part of the game.

Maybe we're just a little jaded from the seemingly never-ending stream of people without an eighth of a clue how the market functions proclaiming not just how it's broken (and how to fix it), but then declaring how they hate things about it that aren't even true.
It's one thing to dislike the market. It's something altogether different to claim (and often vehemently defend) factual untruths about it. For example: how it takes standing around at the market for hours to use it well.
That's what Effy's comment sounded like to me. Based on the follow up, it sounds like that wasn't the case at all, but I think it might be easy to see the misunderstanding if one can see past the glare of their own halo.

Well to be fair, you can log in for a few minutes and get your marketing done and run off an play, but I have spent hours at the market, and I doubt I'm the only one who posts here who can say that. Usually when I'm working on my toon's build rather than working to make influence/infamy, but you can stand at the market for an hour and have the same toons on either side of you for all of that time too.
But yes, I made a lot of money last weekend and also spent most of my time actually playing my characters. 1-10 on a scrapper, 20-35 on one defender, something like 28-40 on another, and I think 20-25 on a third.

I do very occasionally spend a stretch of time actually digging around looking at stuff in them market. Whenever I do that, though, I'm usually applying what I'll tongue-in-cheek refer to "marketeering skillz" - some sort of deep dive into what prices are like across level ranges or similar items, so some sort of serious effort to both buy something right now and still pay bargain prices.
Most of the time, if my character is idle at the market, it's because I went to the market and got distracted by the forums or by fiddling with Mid's builder, or because I wandered off and ate a sandwich. Hitting the market is sort of a natural break point for me after an hour of rampaging through missions or TFs or whatnot, so my brain often wanders down some other corridor, perhaps despite originally having an in-game goal. I can't tell you how many times I broke out Mid's to look at what I needed to buy and instead started fiddling with my build instead (potentially ending up changing my shopping list after I already bought half the things on it).

It's certainly the case that the market forum, like all the other forums, occasionally features posts that seem to have no basis whatsoever in the reality of the game as I play it, or what I read elsewhere. I mean completely bizarre assertions, like they're playing a different game or something.

If someone enjoys the market, as I do, then sure you can spend a lot of time at Wents fiddling with this or that experiment.
But, that level of interaction is entirely optional.
The belief that the only way to to make inf on the market is to slave over a hot interface for hours at a time is a ridiculous myth that's become one of the deader horses on the forums.

The only time recently I've spent HOURS at the market... I was trying out a badge toon and trying to get the "thousands of things sold" and "Field crafter" badges.

Was there a drop in purple prices this week? I was only monitoring Ragnaroks, but I'd under-bid on a spread of them and been sitting there, not quite getting them, for weeks. Prior to the 2xp weekend, I re-bid to just under the going rate. Right after the weekend I snapped up two of the pieces, but was surprised to see that the going rate had dropped 50 million on each (and filled up the "last 5" sales at that new low price, so it's wasn't a single low sale). I got a third set piece two days later, although the price on it didn't drop significantly.
Wasn't expecting them to drop in price. I guess I'm technically no worse off then if the price had stayed roughly steady and I'd bid what I did, but I do hate to feel like I overpaid by 50 million apiece AFTER waiting for weeks (the worst of both worlds!) :P |

This post was given 108 points of negative rep. I just can't figure out why. It's not even off-topic, and I don't call anyone a nitwit.
