A Little Empathy For An Empath?

Alright, the first character I ever made was a defender with Empathy and Dark Blast. Definatly not the best move I could've made. Needless to say, I abondoned her until recently when I got her to 50. Problem is, I havn't the slightest how to slot her, or what IO sets would fit best. She's a damn good healer, but her attack is dwindled, which is fine, this is purely a support character.

I need help, quite a bit. I made the empty build in MIDS of her, and would greatly appreciate SOMEBODY, ripping it appart, swapping pool powers, power-powers, anything, including slot placement and IO sets. I really have no idea what to do with her.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

For one, i think that instead of the Concealment pool, you should pick up Leadership. Maneuvers gives a much better defense bonus than Grant Stealth. If you want stealth for yourself, grab a stealth IO and plop it into sprint. And also, you can boost your team's offense at the same time, which is nice.

I would also try to fit Hasten in your build somewhere. Your best buffs are all on really long recharge timers, so a little extra "omph" in your recharge rate would help a lot!

-STEELE =)

Allied to all sides so that no matter what, I'll come out on top!
Oh, and Crimson demands you play this arc-> Twisted Knives (MA Arc #397769)

Ok first off, do you really want to play a Healer? Are you sure you wouldn't rather play a Defender? I realize that Dark Blast is on the low end of the damage spectrum for Defenders but if you put some care into it you can still do plenty of damage. If you want to play a healer for concept reasons that's your right but an Empath that blasts will always be preferable to an Empath that doesn't, especially when you consider that on a team with high defense (say if there's a Force Fielder present) a Healer will spend most of his time twiddling his thumbs.

Ok so standard healer rant out of the way there are a few things that are useful to know before working on slotting. The first is what is the goal of your build? In general most Empaths I know like to build for Recharge so that they can get Fort, AB, and the Auras out as much as possible. However that is by no means the only viable slotting goal for an Empath.

The second thing to consider is your budget. You can probably do a decent build for less than 100million without two much difficulty but at the other end of the scale there are plenty of IOs that go for more than 100million each.

EDIT: Also why on earth did you take Soul Drain? You don't have any attacks to use it with?

Not perfect, but closer to what people would consider a basic Emp/dark.

EDIT. Reread what the OP said and took out my previous edit.

i see a lot of extremely puzzling slotting choices.

Swift adds very little to flight speed, so i usually find it a toss up whether to slot it for flight speed or run speed on my characters who primarily fly.
With Swift Fly will be near the hard cap with just one flight speed IO.

Slotting Recovery aura with any endurance reduction seems silly. Actually, few powers ever need more than one endurance reduction in my experience, and that's counting attacks.

i second taking Leadership over the Stealth pool. Slotted Tactics allows the team (including yourself) to hit most enemies even with one accuracy slotted. In general the powers in Leadership when used by a Defender benefit the team more than any other pool powers. i'd second taking Hasten as well even though most of my Defenders have skipped it lately.

Flying Empathy/Dark Defender, a few ideas come to mind....

Here's my take on an Empathy/Dark:

Note that i have a tendency to play Defenders as support with a damage secondary, and this build reflects that. This is a fairly expensive build, but less expensive than a purpled-out build. This is also a version of what i consider a leveling/exemp build in that i took what i would consider essential powers as early as possible.

Ok, to give an idea what I was talking about here's a quick build I made up. It's using common IOs so there's a lot of room for improvement but it still has plenty of buffing ability while adding damage and a good bit of control. As EmperorSteele says Hasten is a nice choice to have but I'm not sure what I'd drop for it. Maybe Dark Pit, it's a nice power but unless you take Oppressive Gloom you can only mez minions. You drop Dark Embrace or Leadership to allow you to take Oppressive Gloom though

EDIT: I see Amy beat me to it. She's got a decent build but there are a few things I would disagree with (and no doubt she will say the same about my build). The primary one is the lack of stamina. Stamina isn't essential but trying to run all three leadership toggles without it will really, really suck.

Here's a cheap IO build if you decide to go for sets. As cheap as I could get it while still using sets anyway. I switched the build over to power mastery since power build up synergizes very well with a number of powers in the build like the heals, fortitude, vengeance, and blackstar (this thing goes up to a 124% to-hit debuff, as if it wasn't huge enough already).

Please ignore the level at which I took powers.

EDIT: I realized that my slotting of stamina is on the expensive side. That would need to be changed.

Here's a quick alternate build without slotting that incorporates recall friend and Power Mastery.

i'd use the same basic slotting as the other build for matching powers.

It runs two of them. If you are making a solo build, and the poster doesn't seem to be, then Stamina is a much bigger need.

EDIT: Dark Consumption is in the build as well.

Folks, Thanks so much for the input!
To answer some questions that I noticed:

Price range for IO sets doesnt matter here, the better, the better!
I took soul drain, basically, because I noticed it buffed SOMETHING and I kinda ran out of other power choices.
I do want this to be a primary healing class, damage if and only if there happens to be a force field toon or multiple defenders.
Invisiblity was taken for speed runs through missions

Now for a question... Is Power Mastery the better pool?
Also, Garent mentioned using Blackstar... Is that really a good idea when using a class that need endurance to be effective?
And finally, taking a look at Schismatrix's build, I wonder, would it be such a terrible Idea to swap hasten with recall friend? for rez-ing purposes. I often forget to even use hasten in a fight.

(head desk)

Seriously, it's ok to attack. You don't need to spam the aura and heal people when they are over 80% health. Hell, I think I start to take notice if it's at 50% and that's depending on the AT.

I know its okay to attack, and obviously i will if the board looks neat. I simply wanted to enforce the fact that heals are the primary focus.

Actually, with /Dark Blast you should definitely be attacking because each time you hit an enemy with one of your blasts, you're debuffing their accuracy by almost 10%. That's very nearly the same as increasing your team's Defense by 10%. By comparison, Maneuvers three-slotted with Defense Buff gives a Defense buff of only 5.49%.

That means each time you hit an even-con mob with one of your blasts, you're effectively increasing your team's Defense against that mob by almost twice what Maneuvers does. (Higher-level mobs are affected less by the debuff because of the "purple patch.")

This is one reason why ghosts can be so deadly: their Dark attacks debuff your accuracy so you can't hit them.

That accuracy debuff is why /Dark Blast's damage is so anemic. It's not so great for soloing, but on a team where someone is attracting all the aggro so that you can use your attacks without fear of reprisal, that debuff can definitely improve a team's survivability.

i actually consider buffs the primary focus past the early teens, which is why i'd suggest putting Hasten on autofire. Your best buffs have fairly long timers. Toss out as many Fortitudes and Adrenaline Boosts as you can, and put Clear Mind on squishies when up against groups with mezzes. (Which is a fair number in the mid to late game.) CM is especially good for aggro-magnet squishies like AoE Blasters and toggle debuff/control heavy characters.

Fortitude and Adrenaline Boost can turn a squishy into nigh-unstoppable killing machine, especially if you use both at once, but it takes a lot of recharge to cover as much of the team as possible. Prioritizing and dispensing buffs can keep you very busy, but it can also make it so that you rarely have to use a heal and the team defeats enemies much faster.

Trigger the auras right before or during big fights, not simply every time they're recharged. i've teamed with a fair number of Empaths who would start shouting "Gather for buffs!" and trigger the auras just after clearing one corner of a map and by the time we reached more enemies the auras were wearing off.

Both the builds i posted should be able to solo fairly effectively in addition to supporting a team.

Blackstar is an Excellent debuff. It will floor the to hit chance of most enemies with no slotting (you need some slotting if you fight higher levels). If your enemies can't hit then you have no need for endurance. In any case the basic idea is to cast Blackstar, eat a blue then use Dark Consumption on the survivors. If you but a single end mod enhancement in it then 3 enemies will fill you up and 2 will pretty much fill you (especially when you factor in the 25end from the blue).

Schismatrix, is there anyway we could incorperate recall friend into your build without hurting it too much? and also, taking a look at that build, I like the idea everyone is putting forth about blackstar, combo-ed with dark consumption, but this build looks tight, im trying to find ways to incorperate recall friend and blackstar...lol

QFT. Once you hit the mid twenties people just don't take that much damage on good teams. A bit of healing is sometimes needed but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Buffing the team and more importantly the right people on the team is what keeps the team alive. Fortitude is a very powerful Defense and Damage buff. Adrenalin Boost is a huge Recharge Boost for one of your team members. One of my pet peeves is Empaths who save AB until someone nukes and then use it to refill someone's blue bar after a nuke. Sure it works for that but it's much better to use it when most of the current spawn isn't already dead.

My second build would work for using recall friend, and for the first build you could easily swap it for either Soul Transfer or Dark Consumption*. (Feel free to toss DC's slots anywhere you want.) Using the power order of the second build would actually be better for exemping. Resurrect is usually needed more at the lower levels than the later game.

Edit: Bear in mind that all my builds are usually offender builds, and even if the attacks aren't used often on teams the set bonuses can be very nice. The other builds posted here are also quite good, and actually moat are probably better overall in either performance or price. i tend to go for a mix of decent set bonuses and combat effectiveness, but i'm not an Empathy expert by any means.

*Even with all the toggles in the build it should be fine without Dark Consumption. i like DC mostly because it's an attack that does decent damage and refills your endurance if you hit multiple enemies. There's something amusing about an AoE attack does decent damage and leaves you with more endurance than before you used it.

what about swapping gloom out for blackstar?

Gloom is Dark Blast's bread and butter attack. It does the best single target damage and cycles quickly. Blackstar is a nuke that does decent damage and incredible debuffs, but it wipes out your endurance, kills all your toggles, and is only available every couple of battles or so. On my Defenders that use toggle buffs i tend to avoid the nukes with crashes since they're usually situational at best when supporting a team, and will shut down a fair bit of my team support at a time when it's needed.

Single target attacks like Gloom are very good for helping take down tough opponents. Especially since you can target through the character you're in the process of healing or buffing when using it. Most nukes do very little damage over time, they supply high damage spikes to help wipe out most of a group before it can retaliate.

Still, it's up to you. This is just my opinion, but i would always take Gloom over Blackstar. Now Full Auto, Rain of Arrows and even Blizzard, those are "nukes" i would take. The first two have no crash and Blizzard does Blaster level damage.

As a Empath/Psi I can say that a Nuke that does an sort of Mez is great to have. Even if your team is doing great (like one two nights back. Two bubble fenders and three blasters, we were slaughtering ) it's nice to run in an stun the heck outta the whole mob in one go, doing some decent damage too. Your team will tear up the left overs.

That's a good point, a very good point. Still, i would take Gloom and Blackstar long before i'd drop Gloom for Blackstar.

is that why the set has 6 buffs and 3 heals?

Positron's i13 letter: We are trying to make PvP more accessible to new players, while giving experienced PvP'ers the advantage that comes with formulating tactics around the new systems we're putting in place. PvP from now on will be on our priority list. If something isn't working out, we'll be in there tweaking it and making it work, for the entire future of the product, not just Issue 13.

Once one gets over the trauma of hearing the word heal, it really seems silly to get so riled up when someone says something as straightforward as their primary focus for a build is their primary power set and their secondary focus is their secondary power set.

Here's another Emp/Dark build included for thoughts and ideas.

It uses Dark Mastery, as it's based on my Emp/Dark/Dark, but tweaked to include some things not on her much older build. Even her respec/rebuild for the post IO world is quite old and needs some updating. Power Mastery would be a easy to swap into if preferred.

I don't generally use sets in Recovery Aura, if I did it would be purely as a mule and ED capping recharge would remain THE priority in any case.

The core of her attack chain (debuff chain if you prefer) is Dark Blast, Gloom, Tenebrous Tentacles and Nightfall. She's built and played as an Offender. That said the difference between what and how I'd slot lies not in the blasts and heals, they WOULD be slotted identically, it's their usage plus or minus other things that would change and the biggest change would be in play style not the build itself.
