I actually tried Gfriending myself once. If I'm not mistaken I was actually told "You're already your own friend". Could be wrong, though.

Yeah, I saw that - I assume email from yourself to yourself will go through no matter if you have the email option set to SG and Global Friends only - that's what I was concerned about, but it looks like it may be taken care of
