More fun, Sonic/Nrg or Ice/Nrg Blapping

I decided to make a character with the sole focus on single target heavy damage (I've played tons of AoE oriented character, but at this point, with so many AoE Blasters/farmers/ and shield bash and lightning rod, that's just not called for on a team anymore, so going blapping as a specialty.

So, right now I'm using sonic/nrg, which is great as far as numbers are concerned, but feels ridiculously clunky (I hate the lock down on sonic attacks). It also has a stun instead of a hold to stack, and benefits the team, and has an area sleep. (besides the -res).

Ice is a set I've never played before though, so it has that appeal. It also doesn't root you even while you're jumping like sonic (seems to), and it has several good single target attacks/holds.

So, which is the way to go? When I finally make it to level 50, in your opinion, would not taking sonic be regrettable, or would taking sonic just make me feel like slow/jerky forever.

(As in, is ice comparable in damage due to greater speed and a better nuke).

I can't help you compare (my only Ice Blast using toon is my Kinetics/Ice Defender so that's not a fair comparison) but I can tell you that my level 50 Sonic/En is one of my mains and is still tremendous fun. She solos very well, even against difficult foes and is still valuable on a team for taking down tough enemies. The stun, once fully slotted is as powerful as a hold and the nuke, although PBAoE rather than ranged is still good and quite survivable due to the added stun effect.

However if the rooting on the powers is bugging you now, I would think you'd be better off going with Ice. I don't find it too much of an issue but if you're wanting to be mobile (especially if you're blapping) then Ice would probably be a better choice for you. But if you're wondering if Sonic/En is fun at 50, the answer is definitely 'yes'.

Hope that helps a little.

It's helpful, I've been leveling a sonic/nrg now for a bit, and I can see sirens is going to be such a big deal that I'll likely keep it that way.

As for soloing, do you use Aid Self, or just health, or greens or is the sleep heal proc good enough to do the job when it's slottable?

The "fun" part is rather subjective, but you might look at /Elec for a Blapper. Lightning Field helps your damage, Charged Brawl and Havoc Punch do the same damage (in the same activation) as Energy Punch and Bonesmasher, Thunder Strike is decent AoE damage and mitigation (and it's a disgusting place to put a Force Feedback proc), Shocking Grasp is better damage than Total Focus if your target survives the full DoT (and it's good mitigation and it activates fast), and you can slot Charged Brawl and Havoc Punch with Chance to Heal.

Also, while it may make you unpopular if you're not careful on teams, Lightning Clap can be good mitigation.

Finally, Elec goes better with Ice (if you go that route) because Shocking Grasp + Freeze Ray will reliably hold a boss in two seconds flat. (It would take you five seconds to Screech + TF on your Sonic/Energy.)

Second Ice/Elec; I'm a bit of a concept nut, so I like this combo for the fact that you can combine it with either Arctic or Electric Mastery, depending on the playstyle you develop. Arctic gives you some excellent S/L defense, as well as the "oh crap' button of Hibernate, while Electric lets you quickly hold a boss at range, which then lets you close to melee in complete safety.

I'm working on a sonic/Em and loving it. You hit a lot harder when they're resistance is nil.

Sonic/EM=More DPS and nice debuffs and helpfuls on AVs

Ice/Em=Safer solo due to the holds. Also best nuke in the game.

Sonic/EM gets my vote.

If you're running with no bosses spawning you can take out entire spawns without ever even being touched. Siren's Song is a Mag 3 sleep, so it affects LTs too. Sleep the spawn, then wake them up one at a time with either Screech or Total Focus (This combo actually has a use for Stun, unlike many others, the power I mean). Then proceed to yell and hit things until there aren't any more left. Then rinse and repeat on successive spawns.

Hmm, my desciption of "yelling and hitting things" just gave me a character name idea.

No.....I'm not sharing it.....at least not until I make it and no one can steal it

I happen to have a 50 Sonic/Energy and a 44(?) Ice/Elec. I've never thought about a compare/contrast of them before. They're both GREAT at taking down single targets quickly with varying degrees of safety.

With Siren's Song, Sonic probably provides more spawn to spawn safety. Ice/Elec probably is better at neutralizing someone particularly troublesome NOW. With an epic hold, Ice/Elec has access to 4 ST holds.

On teams, I play both to "kill the boss now". Sonic's -res effect is more useful on teams when the "big bad" is an AV.

I dunno. Both are very effective soloers. I'm currently playing the Ice/Elec so that's fresher on my mind. I may give the Sonic/EM a slight edge, very slight.
