taunt necessary for SD/SS?
As I recall Shields taunt aura is a bit weaker than most but not as weak as Willpower. With careful slotting and some attention you should be able to manage your aggro without Taunt.
That being said I personally would not skip it. It is the best aggro management tool out there. Auto hit, low endurance, quick recharge, and a good spot for taunt sets.
That is just my opinion however and you will find others who do not need it. It really comes down to if you are having trouble holding aggro or not. If you find you are Taunt is a good solution. If not enjoy your tauntless tanker

It's one of the strongest taunt auras in the game, actually.

If you want to be able to hold aggro regardless of the situation, you'll want/need Taunt. If you don't mind there will be corner cases where you can't perform (ie: STF), then you won't need it.
(It also has uses for the -range debuff, excellent set bonuses, and the ability to hold aggro on mobs outside of melee range without moving.)
I personally can't play a Tanker without it; I'm too much of an aggro w****.
Personally, I won't play a tank without Taunt eventually in his build. I may take it as late as 30, but I always take it. There are too many situations where I need Taunt to do my job, even with a strong aggro aura -- In fact, my four highest tanks all have strong auras: Invul/Axe and Stone/Fire at 50, Ice/EM and Shield/SS getting there -- all have Taunt. I love to slot the damage proc in it, since it is autohit in PvE -- I have seen Paragon Protectors in MoG, otherwise virtually unhittable, get killed off with the damage proc in Taunt.
LOCAL MAN! The most famous hero of all. There are more newspaper stories about me than anyone else. "Local Man wins Medal of Honor." "Local Man opens Animal Shelter." "Local Man Charged with..." (Um, forget about that one.)

But one thing I noticed is that I never took taunt because I was waiting until I needed it to hold aggro but that time never came.

I have an ice/SS tank without Taunt and he does fine. All my other tanks have Taunt, though. Since I have a few to choose from, I just don't use the ice tank if I specifically expect to be facing a lot of AV's or GM's.

Hi tanks!
Recently I've been wanting to get my SD/SS gal out for some clobbering, and maybe even get round to respecing into her IO build. But one thing I noticed is that I never took taunt because I was waiting until I needed it to hold aggro but that time never came. I found AAO, foot stomp and shield charge all stopped mobs from fleeing by either stacking taunt from AAO and gauntlet or just because they were on their backs. So she's currently just fitted with SO's and with no taunt, but in my IO build, for some reason I added taunt. When I noticed this, I thought GREAT! I can slip PP in place of taunt to alleviate my end issues, but what would you tank vets suggest? |
I've been soloing my SD/SS but decided to team last night for the first time, I found that I had trouble keeping the aggro on me
It will be hard to fit taunt in my build so I plan on dual building - a team build with taunt and one without.
L50s: Tanks: Cryofission - Ice/EM - Dr Celsius - Fire/Ice - Saint George - SD/SS | Controllers: Psichosis - Ill/Kin - Major Chaos - Ill/Stm | Scrappers - Neutron Crusader - DM/SR
Currently Levelling: Angelic Blade - BS/WP Scrapper | Seeds of Destruction - Plant/Kin Controller
Words to the wise aren't necessary- it's the stupid ones that need them.
"You're right...I forgot...being constantly at or the near the damage cap is a big turn off. Definitely not worth it."

Sorry for not replying, I decided to fit taunt in in the end. Especially when I found what nice bonuses Mocking Beratement gives me.
Thanks for the help guys!

In fact I'll just post up my build and if you see any other glaring issues, please tell me, thanks!
