Donwload manger is SLOW

Posted

Hi everyone.
Something like a week ago I played CoH at friend house and I really like it, so after I put a bit of thought about it I decided that I will buy it... and so I did... via Steam.
Anyway, after steam completed the download I launched the game and the "City of Heroes Updater" pop up and started to download an update, on 2.6K per sec, which is very unlikely even if you have a very slow internet connection, and I got 5 mega...
Is there anyway to solve it? because I'm not going to play a game that download an update of 173m takes 18 hours.

Edit:
its does not download at all now.

P.S. I turned off the firewall, nothing happens.

No firewall, and still crawling DL? That is...weird. As with any game like this, you're going to need to let it patch you up to the current version--but you've exhausted all my ideas re: the blockage.

Not to sound like an idiot...but you're sure it's off?

quite sure, on the right side of the screen there is a warning icon and when I double click on it opens a new window which tell me that my firewall is off and that I should turn it on because it dangerous.

First, you can stop the updater without losing track where you are in the download. There are multiple download servers, maybe you are stuck on a slow one.

Second, you can edit the updater shortcut's target line to choose a different port for the download. The default is 6994, try 13094 or 23094. Details can be found here.

Edit: Oops, wrong link.

I guess I'm a bit stupid, but can you explain to me how to change the port for the download? because I didn't really understand how to do so from the link you gave me.

Right click on the updater shortcut, select Properties. Find the field labeled "Target" and add the port you want to use after the text that is in that field.

If your target looks like this: "C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.exe"

You update it by putting your cursor after the last quotation mark and adding a space, and then typing in a dash and the word port, another space and the number of the port you want to use. If you wanted to use port 80, then it would look like this:
"C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.exe" -port 80

Sorry about that. And don't use 80, I don't think that works anymore. The problem is the default port 6994 is in the default range for most BitTorrent apps and all it takes is one router between you and the download servers monkeying with transfers using that port address to cause problems.

First of all thanks for all the replies.
I tried to change the ports as you said and it did improved it a little bit (15kb), but...
Do you have any other ideas? ( I opened a ticket, but it might take few days, I guess...)

Changing the port to 13094 is about the only thing that really makes an improvement. Just keep stopping and restarting the connection every hour or so. One of these times you will get a faster connection.

Just to reassure you, I almost always get a fast update connection but there just seem to be certain days when the server moves at a crawl. So this problem will likely not affect you every single update but only occasionally.

Flow,

What happened this? How long and what was the average kbps? I'm having problems this month reinstalling the client and the download times are long, long. I got between 50-100 hours. I can't leave my computer on for 50 hours so all month I've been redoing it. I finally canceled my subs yesterday in protest.

In protest of your connection issues?

Since his latest antic consists of necro'ing every thread mentioning downloading the game from the last 6-months or so I'm going to say: yes.

Not in protest of "MY" connection but in protest that I can't access a game client at a reasonable rate. 100 hours for download is nonsense.

You can say whatever you want. I can search the history of the posts and ask questions.

Necroposting is against forum rules.

Here is something else you can try since you have a friend that already has the game installed. Have your friend copy their City of Heroes installation folder to a DVD. There is no need to copy the following folders, so you should be able to fit it all on a DVD.

Don't copy the following folders:

Screenshots
Costumes
Custom_Critter
CustomVillainGroup
Logs
Missions
PowerCust

Some of these folders may not exist if your friend hasn't created any arcs in the Mission Architect. There will also likely be a folder that is named whatever your friends log-in name is. You don't need to copy that either.

Once you have these files on a DVD, copy them into YOUR installation folder on your computer. Make sure it is the same folder where it is already trying to download the game.

This should resolve the problems you are having with the slow download. If anything, it will be a quick patch to get you fully current with the current game version, but most likely the only thing you may need to do is Verify Files on the Updater screen. Usually you won't even need to do that.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

To expand on this a bit, I'll give you a link to what Moderator 08 had to say on the subject of necroposting back in August of this year.

So why is necro posting against the rules? Well I don't want to get into it too much, since I'd prefer to avoid writing a primer on trolling, but there are a lot of nasty little trolling techniques that can rely on necro posting.

I've seen a couple of forum add-ons to automatically lock older threads but there are occasions where there is a legitimate reason to post in an older thread rather than creating a new thread with a link to the old thread so we haven't gone down that road.

I know it can be a hassle, but it's better than the alternative of allowing some meaner sorts of forum behavior free reign.

Anyways discussion of moderator activity is always best kept to PM's, so I'll lock this one.
Also, something else for everyone to keep in mind is Rule #5 from the posted Message Forum Rules and Guidelines.

In part, it reads as follows:

Quote:

5. Non-Constructive posts are prohibited.

Below is a non-exhaustive list of examples of non-constructive posts. As a rule, non-constructive posting is not permitted:
  • Spam - this is considered to be repetitive posting of the same topic or text or nonsensical posts that have no substance and are often designed to annoy other forum users.
Just an FYI

I count at least 11 necro threads on the first page.

Someone needs a timeout from the forums.

Oh, you're right. It's not you, it's the game. *goes back to playing the game*

You didn't catch the part where the regular rules don't apply to x10?

No, other posters.
