Janurary 2010 FArt contest.

Voted. I should note here, Scooter, that you picked a very challenging pose. Skaters look inhuman when they do it in real life, and drawing that is an even bigger challenge. I think you pulled it off pretty well, as it didn't seem off in its proportions, etc. (though I do wonder if your character needs to be a little darker so she stands out from the back ground more... or vice versa).
I did have to vote for Lousy Day, another Victoryite. I am consistently impressed with his work, as I have said before and in the thread you linked to. I'm just sad I can't put this one on my desktop: it's far too tall!

Begrudgingly I voted for LD too.
His piece makes me hate him just a little bit cause he's better than me and I would have totally gone cross-eyed doing something like that.
All joking aside, he clearly has the best piece this month, and deserves his moment. The problem is he set his bar way high and if he doesn't reach it every month he might have problems.

I would just add that this contest is in it's third year now and we have a really wide range of talent, from pencils to markers, from digital art to graphic design (heck we almost has a sculptor) and 17 different artists submitted pieces this time around, which I believe is the new record (and enough to keep the contest going all year ).
Everyone with an active game account is eligible to vote this year, so go spread the word your peeps in the 606 (the Artz forum) need your votes.
Brief rundown of how it works.
This is an elimination style event where each artist must submit a piece every month, before the deadline, based on the theme chosen by our serving FArt Master or Mistress to remain in the contest. Then once the deadline has passed a new thread will open which will clearly be marked with the word "VOTE" where the you guys get to go choose your favorites.
Person with the most votes wins Immunity from elimination for the following month.
Person with the fewest votes gets kicked off the island... err forum. Okay not really... but they are like out of the competition and stuffz.
January "VOTE" thread is already live so head on over and show your support for the artists... and oh yeah before I forget this years "special" bonus qualification is the "Hot Chick Rule."
Every piece, submitted every month, by every artist must have a "hot chick" in it somewhere. How that is interpreted is entirely up to the artist.
January's theme was the Olympics. (Vote now for your favorite!)
February's theme will be "Love is in the air/Pinups"
***A quick heads up (as you probably guessed from the above line) this is art and while January was totally G rated, kid friendly and "safe for work" some months may be more "R" rated.
All the necessary precautions have been taken and there will be no direct links (two click rule is effect) from these forums to pieces that depict nudity.
But for those that do have children or want to follow along from work just know that some months there will be some decidedly NSFW images.***
Hehe, I'm sowwy for stealing all your Victory votes Scooter. Like Grey said, you picked a very difficult pose, not just the pose itself but the angle too. From what I read you were just starting to draw? You did a wonderful job considering that. Good luck next month.
As for setting the bar high, that's exactly what I wanted to do. Honestly, I felt a lot of people weren't putting in as much effort as they could/should have in some of the later months last year. You begin to lose interest after a while if you are trying to do the best you can and it seems like others are just trying to get by. So I am going to do what I can to bring the best out of other artists while I'm still self-motivated.
I had my personal goals too. When I got the idea for my piece, I thought I had a small chance of being able to pull it off, because I had started but never finished some ambitious projects in the past. But what I had this time that I didn't have the other times was the sheer determination. And now that I've done it, I am going to be able to plan for bigger and better things in the future.
I not trying or expecting to win every month. I most certainly won't be able to put in as much effort every month as I did this month (10 days of studying figure skating poses and dark lighting, and a week on the actual painting.) But I would like to think that what I did stirred up something inside the other artists. Clutch said yesterday that he had already put in 7 hours on his February entry. Have you seen his gallery? He has some impressive stuff there, and I am scared to see what he comes up with this month. I have a feeling that a few others will up their game too. As for me, I am going to spend 2-3 weeks studying the classic pin-up style before starting on my piece. February will be an exciting month to watch unfold, and that, for me, is what this competition is all about.

Yup, lot of good entries in there. It's a stiff competition most months (I lost track of it at the end of last year, though) and fun to watch.

LD your piece was certainly a huge kick in the pants to the other contestants (and may be just what the contest needed). Way to bring it!
Flip side of the coin...
You totally stink! My pencil will not go down without a fight!
**goes off to "up" his game**
Enjoy it. Drawing is one of those things I wish I still had time for. I took a bunch of drawing in high school, but I think my talents lean more to writing and photography. I'd love to pursue more things, but I just don't have the time.
