Thinking about Mind/FF. Advice?

My controller collection is almost complete.

Gravity/Kin - 50
Fire/Emp - 50
Ice/Storm - 50
Plant/TA - 50
ILL/Sonic - 50

Earth/Fire - 50 (It's a dom, but it's still controller primary... so she counts. LOL)

So all that's left, primary wise, is Mind.

So... I'm thinking Mind/FF. I've mocked up a build below... would like some insight on it.

You'll notice Terrify is not slotted... I'm not sure how to do it... I was thinking of trying to max out damage/acc/rech and some extra range... is the base duration long enough? So i forgo the damage and work on it's duration.. do i try and enhance it's to-hit debuff?? Is extra range all tha helpful?

Again, as always, thanks in advance!

About the Terrify, I like to 5-slot it with one of the Accurate To-Hit Debuff sets. Both have very nice bonuses depending on what you are looking for. And my controllers tend to be about survivability first (hence the to hit debuff). I usually add a Hami O for good measure. Centriole if you are looking to enhance damage and range (Centriole's are awesome on cones) or Peroxisome if you are trying to enhance damage and fear duration.

You definitely want to enhance the damage. The base damage (30.59) is exactly the same as your Dominate and Mesmerize, but of course it is psi damage and spread out over a pretty good size cone. That's a good portion of psi damage to pass around. The base duration of the fear effect is 27.938 seconds (according to Red Tomax). Season to taste. Your mileage may vary.

Sorry I can't comment about the build because I'm at work and am pretty paranoid about downloading Mids here. (Although Mids at work would be outstanding!!)

My Mind/FF is currently 35 . . . and like you, it is the last of the Control primaries for me to take to 50. My Mind/FF has been mostly solo'ed -- people say that FF is a bad solo set, but I like it for (a) the mez protection of Dispersion Bubble, and (b) the "panic button" of PFF. My Mind/FF can get Nukes from Warburg easier than any other character . . . I also have a Mind/Storm at 39.

I like the FF secondary for Mind, mostly because Mind doesn't need much from the secondary. FF lets me include everything I think is "necessary" from both sets -- something I could not do with my Mind/Storm or a Mind/Rad. The best part of the FF secondary is mez protection -- but there are two holes: Sleep and Immobilize. I took care of the Immob with Combat Jumping, plus it adds a little more defense. There is no easy way to handle Sleep other than higher defense or taking Indomidible Will in the APP, and I don't want to do that for just one mez. So, Break Frees will have to do.

I went with the Ice APP because I wanted a defense-based shield to stack with my other defenses, and AoE damage of a different damage type than Psi. Very, very few foes resist Cold, and Hibernate fills in the lack of a heal or EndRecovery power. I get upper-30's Defense against Smashing/Lethal, and about 40% against Ranged. Those should handle most of the incoming attacks -- not soft-capped, but pretty good. I also wanted a lot of recharge, and I got up to about 130% -- Mass Confusion recharges in about 88 Seconds, and last about 67 seconds.

Your slotting for Mez and Dom is interesting. On other controllers I often use something somewhat similar -- 1 Acc/Mez, 1 Acc/Dam, 2 Dam/Mez Hami-O's, 2 common Recharge. I plan to slot Mez entirely for damage, probably with Thunderstrikes for the ranged defense.

Here is my planned build when I hit 50 . . . if I ever get around to building him out (Subject to change, of course):

I'm posting on my lunch break. This isn't a perfect build but it's a start. It features capped Ranged Defense and +75% Recharge. A lot of the Recharge comes from Luck of the Gambler IOs, which are very expensive to purchase outright, but doable if you run Task Forces and gather merits. I think they cost around 220 merits each. Obtaining them could be a long term goal if you enjoy the character.

Specific differences between my build and yours are as follows:

- Suggest changing the Mind APP for Primal APP, mainly for Power Boost. Power Boost on a Mind Controller is disgustingly powerful. It will actually let you do a Mass Confusion that lasts 112 seconds, if Mids is to be believed. You can also Power Boost your shields if you want to. Also, by going with Primal you vary your damage type against anything resistant to mental damage.

- Changed Super Jump for Super Speed. Mind Control has three powers that are non-notify. To exploit this to its full potential, I find it helpful to have some form of stealth, which you can achieve with Super Speed plus the +Stealth Celerity IO in Sprint. You will now be able to run ahead of the team and prep enemies for their doom before the tank even takes one step toward them, in near total safety (as even if you screw up, your mezz protection and defense should see you through long enough to simply sleep them).

- Purpled out Confuse. It's a cheap purple set and the proc is pretty good. Same with Mass Hypnosis, even if the proc there isn't as great.

- Dropped a number of pool powers.

- I highly recommend taking Levitate. It's got pretty good damage, and is a great power to use on bosses you are trying to mezz. The pattern I use is Mezz > Levitate > Mezz. The knock up animation keeps them occupied while you wait for the second Mezz to stack, and it offers good damage. Levitate also fits well into your standard attack chain.

- Added in Repulsion Bomb. Slotted for damage it actually outdamages Terrify, plus it recharges faster. Not to mention the stun (not so great but we'll take it) and knockdown (a little better).

- Took Recall Friend because it's useful and it was an easy place to slot Zephyr for +defense

There are a few things I'd like to mention.

First, let's start with Terrify. While the ingame info says that there is a -tohit component it is incorrect. Slotting it for such is a waste. My personal preference is either the Posi set (if building for recharge) or Detonation set (if softcapping ranged/AoE) with a recharge IO in the 6th slot. The fear already lasts a good duration and will stack on itself with a moderate amount of recharge.

Second, Dispersion Bubble does provide immobilize protection. Though tossing more defense from hover or combat jumping is a good idea.

Finally, Repulsion Bomb. The damage is the same as Terrify, but all smashing. It's very useful when you run into psi-resistant mobs. However, a word of caution, the animation time is a bear, a smidge over three seconds. Also, it does not benefit from containment so Terrify will generally outdamage it. I found that once I had access to epics it quickly fell to disuse.

I totally forgot about that. Kind of brings you down to Earth when you realize you have to use powers at like, near-Defender damage values.

I still think it's better than Force Bubble or a Leadership power though.

I've never played Mind/ff to siginificant levels (only around the mid-20's) so I can't say how Force Bubble plays with it. I like it on my Plant/ff, but with an immobilize I imagine it's a bit more managable. Between Mind lacking an immobilize and Force Bubble waking up sleeping foes I just may put it in the pass column.

So, when it comes down to Force Bubble v. Repulsion Bomb, it's a toss up depending on what my primary may be.

Well, as I said, my Mind/FF is 35, so he just picked up Repulsion Bomb. Unslotted, it is not very impressive, but most of the time I forget that I have it. I'm not sure how much I'll like Force Bubble. If I find that I want to drop either of those, I'll probably add in Force Bolt. It is a fun "get out of my face" power.

KingSnake,

I just wanted to say that an Earth Dominator doesn't count. You should totally do Earth/Rad after you do Mind/FF.

Local Man,

Your "click this datalink to open the build" didn't seem to work. Just FYI in case you wanted people to be able to import it.

Thinking about Mind/FF. Advice?
Yep, do it! my Namesake is a Mind/FF and I have fallen in love with the combo many times over.

that being said, let me look at your build.

Terrify: I personally have it slotted 3 Acc/Rech, 3 Peroxisomes

since you're planning on HOs anyway, just slot veng with 3 Membranes

get some To-Hit in tactics!

Confuse is probably overslotted, I've got 5 slots in it for the purple set, otherwise, you probably don't need more than 4 slots

I'm throwing repulsion Bomb into your build, it's decent AoE damage and it also provides a little extra control (I personally went with Fissure for my Epic AoE because it stacks for more stuns)

Here's what I would do differently

BTW, I noticed one secondary you haven't yet tried is Cold.

I have a 50 Mind/Cold Troller that I love love love. I hadn't really thought through the synergies before trying it, but I find the combo of Super Speed + Arctic Fog for invisibility combined with Mind's 3 snipe-mezzes to be really awesome. The cone fear benefits from being able to position yourself safely too. And, because of Heat Loss, I can keep Super Speed up indefinitely without taxing my endurance.

The "downside," I guess, is it's a very tight build, but I was still able to fit in most of the powers (the power I ended up skipping is the epic armor). The other thing is that it while provides great single target abilities from early on, you don't become a good AoE Controller until the 30s. But, wow, what a great one you unexpectedly blossom into. Don't give up until you've taken Mind to high levels (and ignore anyone who says Mass Confusion is worse than Seeds of Confusions, as they serve different functions).

One last thing. If you go Mind/Cold, consider the Primal APP for Power Boost. Both Mind and Cold benefit hugely from it. Specifically, Benumb pushes significant boundaries.

Eh... it doesn't count?!? heh. I'd rather do an Earth/Thermal if i ever get around to it. I've got a top notch Rad/Sonic fender. I tend to try and mix things up as much as possible, and don't repeat powers unless i have a concept i lOVE that demands it, or i want a powerset for villians i've already used for heros, or vice versa.

But an earth troller is a ways off. I've still got this one to level up, and more then likely, GR will be out before, or just soon after she's done, and i'm hoping to have Elec control to play with at that point. (i head we were getting it in GR from some source... right? Or did i just dearm that up??)

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I'll be working alot of it into my finial build. I made her over the weekend. Got a name i like, a look i like, and a concept i can get into. Now, i just have to finish up my Fire/Shield scrapper who's about to hit 30, and a stalker who's about to hit 28. (i run two at a time.) Her, and an Shield/Ice tank are next up.

I haven't tried it on a troller. But i have a lvl 50 AR/Cold Corr. And he's my main go to Corr these days. Sleet+FA... is a very wonderful thing. lol.

Truth be told, the only "support" powerset i don't have a lvl 50 in, is Traps.

MMs
Bots/Dark
Thugs/Pain
Merc/Posion

Corr's.
Fire/Thermal
Rad/Kin
Ar/Cold

Def
Rad/Sonic
FF/Archer
Kin/Psy
Emp/Sonic

Trollers.
Grav/Kin
Plant/Ta
Ice/Storm
Ill/Sonic
Fire/Emp

That's 12 of the 13 Support Powers sets. (all 50) I have a lvl 2 Sonic/Traps corr. I just need to get around to running her...
