This is a personal question that you only have the answer to, and the only way you are going to answer it is by playing each AT.

You don't have to play an AT to 50 to know if you like them a lot, but atleast getting to late 20's should let you know if it is what you are looking for.

It took me 3 years to find out my favorite AT and honestly if I would have asked people here, it would have took me 3 more, because most say the AT sucks, but what sucks to some is golden to others, this is why I have learned that there is no AT that sucks, they just aren't for me.

I know for a fact that I like to do damage and at the same time avoid it. So I found out that playing Doms and Scrappers fit my playstyle perfectly. Doms to me are just fun and when you learn how to fully play one PvE content is just easy (except for PToD). Personally I just got Scrapperlock after making my 2nd one and found out what I was doing.

Things I'd avoid for a NEW player, and why:

Blasters. They tend to go from reallyreallyeasy to reallyreallyhard around level 30 and it's like hitting a wall.

Storm defenders. It's an odd set of skills. I've played with good Stormies and bad Stormies and I DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING DIFFERENTLY. In one case the team works, in the other it does not.

Force Field defenders. If you build right and do your job right, it's really kinda boring. The team never loses, but you don't DO much.

So you think you're a hero, huh.

the "best" AT in my opinion is the Mastermind, and if you wanna be specific, the Bots/traps mastermind.

MMs can essentially do anything you want in the game: Damage, tanking, Buff/Debuff, Crowd Control, etc, etc.

their only drawbacks are that they mature a bit slowly, and are a bit slow overall, and are hard to play. This can make them an intimidating AT to play for new players, but given some practice there is honestly nothing you cannot do with an MM.

... though I have to point out, my first 50 was an elec/elec blaster... back when there pretty much *was* a wall at 38 (running out of content,) a higher debt cap, debt coming early (and actually having an effect,) no patrol XP, no "half debt in missions," etc.

Personally... I think it helped more than anything. You definitely become aware of aggro, mezzes and the like.

To 'learn' how to play the game, i.e. a good starting Archetype for a beginning player, try a Scrapper (hero) or a Brute (villain). Both have high damage, and protection in the form of resistance or defences. :3

Later on, try out Blasters and Controllers and Dominators and everything else. You pretty much can't go wrong with a Scrapper or Brute as they can take care of themselves solo or in teams.

Everyone needs to do something like this. I got my first toon to fifty first soloing about 95% of the time, and he was an Energy/Thermal Corruptor. I still remember my childlike glee when, having finally earning the Patron pet, I could actually beat a boss in a mission without getting a Shivan. Every time I get crappy with trying to get a character to a milestone these days I just remember the bad old days and everything seems perfect again. If anything, you can level up too fast in the new game.
