ugh excuse all that excess crap, this was my first time posting a build in mids, so just open the datalink to see the build please. i would like to explain that i tank w/ this defender, and i do it extremely well. i'm always in melee, and i lead w/ darkest night, always. i pull the generals w/ no problem on the itf, and i tank romulus pretty much no issue, as well as any other av w/ no mezzes. with all the recharge i have no problem only using gloom, dark blast and tentacles. and i have been pleasantly surprised w/ how well sould drain adds to my damage output. i also like to nuke the ambushes on the itf as well as large mobs w/ no bosses. in the rare occasion i do die when tanking, i can rez myself, rez any allies that my drop w/ HT and then hit dark pit for good measure. this toon is extremely good all around and i'd just like to hear some input on how something could be improved.

Im not sure but it looks like you skiped Nightfall, I would drop Blackstar or Moonbeam for Nightfall.

yes i skipped nightfall on purpuse, for one i love nova'ing in certain situations, and i just took the snipe for the 7.5 recharge. nightfall doesn't make sense at all for me because i'm always right in melee and i'd have to back out to get the full aoe effect of a cone. would slow me down in the long run and probably get me killed more.

it's pretty important to me that i keep my recharge basically where it is

I've got a few points, observing the constraints you gave about keeping recharge as is. This is in order of what I consider to be priority

1) Take the 5 Red Fortunes from Combat Jumping and spread them into DN and DS. Not only will you be better able to do what a Dark Def is supposed to do: debuff enemies, you'll improve your global recharge by putting 4 Dark Watchers into DN and 4 Cloud Senses into DS.
2) Tempered Readiness is not a good set for Tar Patch, especially for a high recharge build. On a high recharge build, small recharge increments don't provide much practical bonus. With your current build, here's recharge for some key powers:
Blackstar: 100.4s
Fearsome Stare: 12.6s
Soul Drain: 33.5s
Tar Patch : 31s
If I change Tar Patch's slotting to 3 recharge IOs, those become
Blackstar: 101.4s
Fearsome Stare: 12.8s
Soul Drain: 33.8s
Tar Patch : 24.5s
It's just my belief that Tar Patch is something you want coming up ASAP.
3) You can get your 6.25% bonus from Fearsome Stare with 4 slots of Cloud Senses, freeing up a slot and increasing your to-hit debuff. It comes to whether you prefer the fear or the debuff.
4) The Perf Shifter Proc is best used as a 2nd-4th slot in Stamina. For one slot in Stamina, you're better off using a generic IO. The proc provides an expected value of .2 end/second. The generioc IO takes you from 2.77 to 2.97 end/sec, an improvement of... 0.2 end/sec. I'd go for the cheaper and certain recovery in this case for one slotting Stamina.
5) Personally, I'd go for Oppressive Gloom over the rez, especially since you say you're a meleer. Most everyone around you should be stunned when you fire off Dark Pit, combined with OG.
6) You say you avoid Nightfall because it's a cone that "would slow me down in the long run and probably get me killed more". Fearsome Stare and Tenny Tents are both cones too. One thing I like about playing my D3 is using FS, TT and Nightfall all from one spot in succession. Your global recharge would barely change by getting Nightfall (slotted with Posis) instead of Moonbeam. Something doesn't jibe to say that TT is part of your attack chain yet you don't want to use a cone.
7) Super Speed + Shadowfall = pve invisibility. So the Stealth IO doesn't provide practical pve benefits.

Global = Hedgefund (or some derivation thereof)

I notice you have two purple sets. Is there a reason you didn't use more, such as an Apocalypse set in Gloom? If you did that you'd net a small amount of additional recharge.

You have Tenebrous Tentacles slotted as an attack, but you say you don't want to use Night Fall? You're seriously gimping your long-term damage potential. You'd do ridiculously more damage using Night Fall as often as you can than you will trying to Blackstar as often as you can, even if you have to move back and forth a lot to leverage Soul Drain and then your cones.

Why Dark Pit when you've got such low recharge slotting in Howling Twilight and you don't have Oppressive Gloom? Because Dark Pit has such low duration and high recharge, even at your high global recharge you're only able to stack the power on LTs and bosses after about 17 seconds into a fight. My advice is to either add recharge slots to HT or take OG, or both, so you can at least stack your mezzes. Personally, I think you'd be more effective mezzer in general by making Fearsome Stare better, even though it's a "soft" mez.

I hate how you've slotted Dark Servant. First, if you're going to slot him like that, use a Cloud Senses proc. The way you have him slotted he'll only ever have the chance to do negative damage with Twilight Grasp. Cloud Senses will have a chance to go off in TG, his aura and Tenebrous Tentacles. Mine has no sets in him, just Hami-Os. Slotting more of the Cloud Senses set is probably the best choice if you must get +rech out of slotting him.

Your slotting on Twilight Grasp seems not strong to me. The recharge slotting is pretty low, but I guess that's OK with your levels of global recharge. Mainly it's not slotted very well for heal. What was the goal of going with the Theft of Essence here? +HP?

Is the Scirocco's chance for lethal proc in Soul Drain really worth it? You're going to activate that power every 30's seconds or so. That's a slot you might get more mileage out of elsewhere.

Beyond that, I agree with all the advice that Deacon offered above. I really don't feel like you've optimized either how fast you can get Fearsome Starte back or how long it lasts here - the problem is that the Glimpse set lacks good total enhancement values even at 6 slots. (My Fearsome Stare has four Dark Watcher's and two Lysos in it.) You could get much better recharge in Tar Patch, which lets you stack it longer. Use a common IO for that one slot in Stamina, or add 2 more slots. I don't understand why the Gift of the Ancients set is used in Shadow Fall. If you want to conserve your global recharge bonus, use Red Fortunes in Shadow Fall, then steal slots from Combat Jumping for other powers and/or slot Blessing of the Zephyr in it.

This build feels to me like it's too focused on casting Blackstar all the time, and not on doing what a DDD is really good at. I feel like you've made sacrifices in your access to a lot of the things people want a DDD for - strong DR debuffing, fairly frequent -Regen from HT (and TG) and strong -toHit and fear. If I was on a team that wanted more damage, I wouldn't ask a DDD along for that - I'd get a Blaster or at least a Kinetics Defender instead. Instead, I'd want the DDD to have strong recharge focused on getting things like Howling Twilight, Fearsome Stare and Twilight Grasp back as fast as possible.

Bl00dbath, if you export your Mids build using the Titan boards format, it copies much nicer into the CoH posts.

thanks a lot guys, all of this is duely noted, this was my first attempt at a d3, and he's very playable, but everything that you said makes sense, thanks a ton. also, i didn't actually slot shadow fall like that, i forgot to change it in mids

ok i've made some changes and i'm just curious how you would slot the heal? i've also decided to keep the rez for itf crystal rushes, it's very handy. making some of the changes deacon suggested i've lost some global recharge as well. if it's possible for you to make a build so i can use it as a refernce that would be nice.

spamming my own thread...also i switched the placement and slotting of dark pit and howling twlight, so ignore that on the build

Posted

what are your thoughts on dropping dark pit all together for assault or tactics, be worth it w/ only the one slot available or is dark pit even worth it w/ just one slot?

Posted

I'm not a big fan of the hold procs if you don't have anything to stack with them. If you want some more cheap +recharge you could take one hold proc out, move the slot to twilight grasp and go 1 acc IO and 5 doctored wounds for +5 recharge.

Might take the other one and put it in fearsome stare and switch slotting to 5 glimpse. I think it'd be more effective to enhance the fear duration than the -tohit since you're already stacking a hefty amount from your blasts and toggle.

I moved a lot of sets around and added a ragnarok set to night fall. Put a -KB io into superspeed and took the steadfasts out of dark embrace and replaced with more resistance.

Hopefully will give you a few ideas.

Using all of the above suggestions I think I've come up with a way better build than I'm playing at the moment. Although I'll have to strip some toons and spend quite a bit more cash, I think it should be worth it because I love playing this toon.

i was inspired by my extremely awesome new build that i respec'd into earlier tonight with all of your help to make a semi-clone w/ a mastermind. slightly lower tohit debuffs from me, but w/ the pets and such i would imagine it would do quite a bit more damage and still be just as helpful w/ making the mobs melt fast. idk if u guys would know about mm's, but i'd like some feedback

just to know, how a D3 def handle ùob with high defense?
i see no D3 build that include tactics (only maneuver)

i don't recall dark misama having a defense debuff, so how could you debuff mob that you can't hit? (no aim in dark) :s

May I suggest changing one of those lyso's to an endoplasm (acc/mez). I am assuming that when you slotted Dark Watcher's Despair, you skipped the to hit debuff and the proc for slow, and used the recharge and end pieces. Adding one lyso essentially caps the to hit debuff aspect. While the fear is fairly long lasting out of the box, I have found that the extra 33% off an endo serves quite well...

The Dark toggle is auto hit -tohit debuff and damage. So theres always some debuff no matter mob defense, and I believe the fear cone checks vs psi def...so theres usually plenty of -to hit on mobs no matter what, but I see your point in general you cant debuff what you cant hit.

For the most part though, dark miasma offers debuffs that will affect most mobs even those with high def to typed damage apart from psi. I solve this issue with the kismet +acc IO in one of my def powers if I do not choose tactics.

last question, mezz !
i came to realise that i never played a toon that had no mezz protection/resistance of some sort.
AM, mezz shield for meleer, sonic aura, domination..

how do you handle the stun/hold that will cross your road?

Break Frees

Seriously, I ALWAYS maintain half my bars with breakfree inspirations.

Increasing your defense, especially Ranged, will help you use fewer inspies, but never get caught without them, even if it means your team needs to wait a few minutes between doors for you to make a side-trip for Break-Frees.

Actually, that's what they are. I misspoke. It's four DWs and two Endos (no Lysos). Very close to ED cap on toHit, good recharge and end reduction, 66% acc and fear enhancement.
