DSL vs cable?

Looking for someone familiar with download speeds and their effect on online gaming (CoH specifically of course lol).

I switched from cable to dsl today and went from 12Mb/s to less than 3... I've not noticed a huge difference in gameplay but my fear is that it may be an issue on larger teams/events (such as lord winter) I have the option to upgrade to double speed or stick with cable. Also I noticed tonight that movement from npcs and vehicles was very choppy but I switched back to cable (haven't had it disconnected yet obviously) and noticed the same thing. Thoughts?

City has so little bandwidth usage during gaming, the difference between the DSL and cable is pretty much nil. I mean, it's possible to play this game on dialup, fer chrissakes. (I played on dialup for almost a full year.)

Kinda what I figured but that still leaves the question of the choppy movement from npcs and vehicles... is that from the server then? I play almost exclusively on Virtue if that matters.

You noticed that choppiness on both cable and DSL because the difference in available bandwidth has NOTHING to do with it.

Having said that, one connection might be better than the other. You might want to try one connection and type /netgraph 1 in the chat line. That will give you some graphical and numeric information about the quality of your connection. Then switch to the other and try the same thing.

Type /netgraph 0 to turn it off.

As a guy who's seen both sides of the industry, subscribe to whichever one gives you the most value. Whichever provider gives you the best bandwidth cap for the price (and an other services, like TV or phone), take it. Both technologies are pretty similar these days. Of course, line quality will factor in, but it's pretty hard to determine line quality without special equipment, so you won't know if you have a degraded line until you subscribe anyhow. But in either case, they'll fix any line issue to keep you as a customer.

I'm going with cable, soon, but that's because locally my friend has had a great time with it, but we've had issues with DSL (we were told we would have to wait for them to fix our line [Phone/DSL] because of some bull. Apparently, we were able to pull the "Aging Grandparent" card and get them out sooner. Turns out, it wasn't us, they put us on a dying circuit..) but we had Qwest. Also our modem d/c's and reconnects whenever we get a call in, most likely due to a phone wire issue that's on our end.

Seriously, shop around via the people you know and ask what their experience with their connection is.

Is that true with CoV as well? I know my older pc tends to struggle more with it (I'm on cable)

CoH and CoV are the same game. There is no bandwidth difference. The CoV *ZONES* are more graphically complex. That's why your older computer chokes.

It also doesn't help that pretty much the entire zone is reflective, and all the geometry is condensed into one very tight spot.
