Aegis IOs 3rd/5th set bonus accurate/intended?

Everywhere I read (including in-game), it's posted that Aegis provides a 1.565% bonus to AoE defense (and 3.13% fire/cold defense) at 3 slots, and the values are repeated but swapped at 5 slots (3.13% AoE, 1.565% fire/cold).

Is this intended, or is this a bug? I don't see other sets that repeat bonuses like this. I assume (if it's correct) that both bonuses apply, so you're actually getting 4.695% defense to AoE and Fire/Cold? I don't see any other defensive bonus over 3.75, so that seems very suspicious - especially when it's only a set of 5.

From all the other sets I've looked at (primarily positional defense, but I've certainly looked at lots of random recipe drops) I never see bonuses repeat within the same set like this. I'm not complaining, I just don't want to craft a build based on this and then find that it was in error and lose 1/3rd, 1/2, or 2/3rds my AoE defenses.

Thanks!

Mind you this set was created before the Defense set bonus change. It used to give you "just" 3.13% F/C and 3.13% AoE.

EDIT: And yes, they do stack for a total of ~4.7% F/C/AoE

it all adds up that's for sure and other sets with more then one of the same type of bonus is thunderstrike it has a 2.5% range def at 3 or 4 slot can't remember and then another 1.25% range def at 6th slot . So yep they add together.

Thanks for the quick reply - makes sense. Hmm, is there a listing of when each set was added? If there are other sets that provided bonuses to pairings like that, it seems like they would be very handy indeed... getting that 150% bonus implicitly.

I'm presently working off of paragonwiki and http://cohpodcast.com/2009/episode-4...io-sets-part-4 trying to sort out the positional defenses. I'm using mids, but it's very hard to read the set bonuses on IOs in mids, the window is often too short for the 6 slotting bonuses.

I dont know if there is a specific listing but here is the breakdown

I9 was most sets (obviously)
I11 added Taunt, Knockback, Endurance Modification, To Hit Buff, To Hit Debuff, Defense Debuff and Purples
I13 added Universal Travel, Recharge Intensive Pets, Accurate Healing and Debuff plus 2 new hold sets and the 'nuke type' PBAOE (no endrec but more+rech)

We are porbably due some other new sets, a TAOE for nuke types being an obvious gap.

Things you probably know: the difference between 40% Defense and 45% Defense is, generally, the 40% Defense case gets hit twice as much. You only use the best Defense so you're usually getting either a Positional or a Typed defense.

The original IO system screwed people with typed defense. It was nearly impossible to get anywhere near full coverage- Kinetic Combat gave Smashing only (no Lethal, no Melee), Thunderstrike gave Energy only. Some types gave Fire&Cold, others gave Fire alone, it was a mess.

If I remember, Super Reflexes scrappers were outsurviving Ice Tanks.

At some point the system was fixed so that all typed defense was either a pair (S/L, F/C, E/N) or Psi, and anything that gave typed also gave half as much positional and vice versa.

This caused many, many ultratough builds but I still find it much fairer than the previous system.

This is known, and "mostly intended".

Originally, "damage typed" and positional defense bonuses were separate and distinct. This led to a great deal of dispersal of the bonuses for damage types among the various IO sets, and made it very hard to come up with meaningful bonus stacking across damage types.

This was changed so that the "main" typed bonuses always appeared in pairs (lethal+smashing, fire+cold, energy+negative). Psi defense has no partner, and there is no such thing as toxic typed defense.

At the same time, the following match-ups were added.

  • Wherever a set granted a positional defense bonus it now also added a 1/2-sized damage typed defense bonus pair.
  • Wherever a set granted a damage typed defense bonus it now also added a 1/2 sized positional defense bonus pair.
Those pair-ups look like this.
  • Melee <-> Lethal+Smashing
  • Ranged <-> Energy+Negative
  • AoE <-> Fire+Cold
What you're seeing is that Aegis originally had both Fire or Cold and AoE defense. When the pairings described above came through, those ended up with self-reinforcing bonuses. The same thing happened in several other sets (as others have noted).

Thunderstrike does the same thing, giving 2.5 E/NE, 1.25% ranged at 3 and 2.5% Ranged, 1.25% E/NE at 6. The overall defense is lower than Aegis, but it's the same deal.
