Hey Scraps, I'm thinking about rolling a dark melee character but I can't settle on a secondary for him. I was originally thinking SR simply because its easy to softcap but then I started thinking about the possibilities of SD, WP and Inv.

What secondary do you guys think I should go with? I actually already have a Kat/SR so I might prefer a different secondary to play with.

DM goes well with everything, but I think overall it goes with Shield the best ; DM gives Shield the selfheal it lacks (and tohit debuffs to stack with defense while leveling), and Shield gives DM the AoE power it lacks.

I would go Willpower or shields. Let me list some pros and cons.

Willpower
Pros - Great regen, moderate defense and resistance hybrid, -tohit from DM stacks well with your defense, provides extra recovery, does not need expensive IOs to be effective, and provides a useful tier nine, can use a varitey of IO sets in multiple powers and extra hitpoints.

Cons - Only two powers can really be skipped, the tier nine (although not reccomended) and the rez power, the defense is to elemental/energy attacks and only gives you mid-20% defense to those attacks (this is useful, but defense really doesn't take off until 35% and up). The set ALMOST forces you to take tough and weave in order to absorb alpha strikes.

Shields
Pros - Extra AoE attack (very high damage) that can be up at least once per mob, A useful tier nine to stack with your defense, a team buff power with self -rech resistance, good defense debuff resistance, AUTO +defense power that increases defense when others are close by, -tohit from Dark Melee stacks very well with your inherent defense powers and you get extra hit points. The self heal from DM also goes very well with Shields lack of healing. This set also provides a huge damage boost with a saturated AAO.

Cons - Shields provides only moderate defense despite it's defense based set up due to having low end resistance set up in two different powers. This is becuase Shields is a hybrid set just like Willpower. Shields requires a lot of IO slotting to become softcapped alongside using tough and weave in conjunction. This makes the set endurance heavy, almost forcing you into the Body mastery pool later on for the Physical PErfection power. The set only has one real skippable power, the Grant Cover power, assuming you can deal without the extra debuff resistance and rech resistance it provides. The IO's reccomended for this set get quite pricey, so be prepared. I suggest keeping OWtS as a tier nine becuase the extra resistance buff really shines with a softcapped build.

IMHO, I would go with shields if you got a good 500 million to a billion influence to sink into it once you start slotting IO's. My first shield toon was a BS/Shield scrapper that I levelled to 50 pretty fast (no powerleveling) and was pretty efficient (granted i had parry). With a Dark Melee/shields toon you will be doing mad damage pretty much all the time between Soul Drain and AAO, plus once you're softcapped, you're nearly unstoppable.

Hmm see shields sounds excellent with its +dmg and huge AoE attack but I don't have anywhere near that kind of money. I've pooled all my inf together to fund my Spines/Dark scrappers final build and that's only about 240 million

Willpower sounds fun too, and I think it would fit better than shields thematically. Seeing as WP will cost a lot less to IO, I might have to go with that. I'm gunna have to play around in mids and see if I can make a good DM/WP. Thanks for the help guys!

I've hit level 50 with my elm/sd days ago and I'm still not softcapped to melee. Soloing any kind of content just fine on +3/x8 because insps just drop so fast.

Ok, by that point I might start sounding like a broken record as pretty much one out of every two posts I make here is basically "inspirations are great", but, well, it's because inspirations are that great, and I think it's a shame the conventional advice for shield seems to be "ignore unless you've got 1 bill to spend" as it's a fantastic powerset on SOs in my opinion.

i have a Dm/SD and a DM/SR.i have to say that the the DM/SD has made my DM/SR feel damn near unplayable.i just miss the added damage and aoe to damn much to combine DM with anything else ever again.

I like DM myself. I have a DM/SR and a DM/SD. I like both. Never tried a DM/WP, but it sounds lovely.
Sould drain and then shield charge is great.

The defense plus the -tohit for the DM/SR is also great to. Plus in SR you have quickness to supplement your recharge time on your powers. Great for siphon life especially. Practiced brawler is great mezz protection. Having /SR give you some great time to let your regen go to work. At the same time YOU MUST TAKE TOUGH! Because when you do get hit, you take the hit hard. Like Roy Jones getting knocked out.

very true,good resource management can take a person far in this game.

once you are one small luck away from the softcap,you can accomplish a lot.certainly more then enough to keep you going till you earn the scratch you need.

You do not need a lot of influence to have an excellent shield character. Do not listen to those saying that. It is easy to achieve 30 to 35% defense to all positions with a few cheap (read: under 1k influence a recipe) sets and the stead fast protection resistance/defense enhancement.

I couldn't agree more Nihilii. For instance, everyone goes on about DA being a squishy, terrible set, but I love my Spines/DA! pop 1 or 2 oranges and he's a wrecking ball!

Invisibum, would you mind posting your build? I'm seriously thinking about going DM/WP because it would fit better thematically and it's a bit different. In fact if anyone has any DM/WP builds, can you post them please?

Nice build Santorican, people are talking bull when they say SD is only playable with a billion inf build.

I rolled a DM/WP last night and I'm gunna see how I do with him for now. If I don't enjoy playing him then I'll probably reroll him as DM/SD.

Hey guys, I've thrown this build together, would you mind looking over it? I'm pretty happy with the regen, and I can't see me ever having any endurance problems. Defence numbers aren't bad, S/L resistance is at 50 and 1.1% away from cap with SoW and I've managed to squeeze 25% global recharge out without spending a fortune. Thoughts?

Note - I intend to use ninja run for travel, hence the slots in sprint swift and hurdle.

Stepping in to defend myself a bit, I did mention that my first shield toon was a Broad Sword/Shield scrapper. I had parry to help carry me while I was working on him, plus I used cheap-o IO sets like smashing haymakers, sciroccos and makos (which are fairly easy to obtain) to help boost my defense up. I am not saying shields NEED Ios to be effective, but I am saying that if you took an SOd Shield Scrapper and an SOd Willpower, no IOs OR Inspirations, there is a drastic difference. I played my Shield Scrapper to 50 on pretty much JUST 30-35% defense, only softcapped to melee when parry was up, which was all the time in a battle. What I did say was if you want to soft cap a Shield toon, the best IOs cost quite a bit. Since soft cap is 45% and not 35%, I rest my case.

Second, Willpower is a very good all-around set, sporting resistance and/or defense to all attacks, alongside very good regen and recovery. Combined with Dark Melee, it would allow the OP a little breathing room while he adjusted to the Dark Melee powerset. Dark Melee can be quite endurance heavy in its own right due to the nature of it's high damage attacks. Note...I said CAN BE, not ALWAYS IS. Now, personally I personally think Shields is the stronger set once its beefed up with sets and combined with Siphon Life, Willpower is stronger out of the gate however hands down.

To the OP, If you start off with Shields, it can be a fun set, and one advantage you will have is your -tohit debuff from your attacks. Try it out, use Sant's build, it's a decent low end build, no doubt. And when you get the cashmoney, try outfitting with some ToD Sets and such.

Except that you don't need the best IOs to softcap an */SD Scrapper. You don't need LotG's, purple or PvP sets, or anything more expensive than the basic rare IOs to softcap yourself. With CJ, Weave, and SOs (55% def slotting), you're going to have ~32% +def(all). Add in the Steadfast Protection +def IO (3% +def all), 3 ToD 6 piece sets (11.25% +def melee), 2 BotZ 3 piece sets (6.26% +def ranged and AoE), a Scirocco's 5 piece (3.13% +def AoE), and a Mako's 6 piece (3.75% +def ranged), and you're nearly there. The only thing that's even remotely expensive on that list is the BotZ sets, but those bonuses aren't too hard to get (and I'm too lazy to put together a budget build right now anyway). You'd be amazed what you can do with a 200 mill and intelligent purchasing habits (along with a little TF running as you level). Softcapping */SD is only minorly harder than softcapping */SR.

The problem with that build is that you have no to hit for soul drain so you'll have a difficult time maximizing its capability to boost your damage. Here is a cheap build(relatively) that I whipped up.

Ah damn you're right, I'll have to see if I can change soul drains slotting for some accuracy. That's a pretty nice build, thanks. Only thing is I was trying to avoid things like BotZ because that KB protection one could double the price of my build.

By the way, if you change one of those red fortune sets in your build for a serendipity set, you'd be closer to the AoE soft-cap and still be soft-capped to ranged.

My vote goes for dark/shield. I have a shield/dark tanker which I love playing. He's softcapped and with One with the Shield active he caps S/L resists. That you need 1 billion to do that is ********. My build was really cheap I must say and it was my first 50 on the server and I had all enhancements sets BEFORE I hit 50 (which was a quite fast ride) and that is without looting anything purple.

Soul Drain + Shield Charge is the world... I can only imagine the damage it does on a scrapper.

Both are great choices. Really, you can't go wrong with either.

I find WP to be the more survivable set myself, due to it's Regen.

However, shields is the more fun set, due to Shield Charge and AAO.

Also, the cheapness of getting a great build also depends on what you plan on doing as you level up.

I'd suggest it for any melee toon for sure...do the 6 Phalanx TFs. You want the accolade anyways...and that's some merits to get a couple of the expensive IOs.

Alot of my scrappers play like single target killers, so I'm used to it...but if you're not...I'd suggest going DM/Shield for the added AOE of Shield Charge.

Maybe using common invention enhancements will power will be more survivable then shield defense. Using sets they'll be around the same but due to shield charge you won't have to worry about anything attacking you because it'll be dead.

*shrug* I still find WP more survivalable due to the regen. But yes, shield charge does help shield with it's survivability.

KD (and possibly outright dead) enemies, goes along way But when defense starts to fade, I found always on Regen beat out every 30 seconds (give or take) KD.

Then again, going DM, does give an attack with a heal component.

Looks good, I'd swap Touch of Death into Smite and Mako's Bite into Midnight Grasp, and slot True Grit for Healing, the resistance given isn't worth the slotting.
