Changing colors on Heals 'n Buffs...
Um, I know I made my Thermal's powers all look like actual fire, so no green healing flames.

I have a fire/thermal corruptor whose costumes are all red and black. What is this GREEN STUFF????
I've only changed the colors on 3 toons:
1) The one mentioned above.
2) An invuln/EM tank whose 'pink pom-poms' are now white to match his costumes. First costume is green+white, next is red+white, then blue+white and gold+white.
3) I have an earth/rad named Agent Pitchblende who wears black & grey. His stone powers are all back and grey except the rock dude - he uses the lava theme to look like black stone with green molten parts to match the radiation power colors. I've gotten several compliments on that one item. (FYI, pitchblende is uranium ore.)
Generally, I don't change the colors because I've built the bio and/or costume around the colors we had for years and I'm used to each character having certain colors. NEW characters will be more customized.

And here I thought this was going to be about wishing we were able to change the effects on characters (the spiraling blue for endurance buffs and the like)... Something I could get behind!
Honestly, talk about distracting, costume blocking powers... Empathy has too many that can't be changed: Clear Mind, Fortitude and Adrenaline Boost
I wish we could change those and hope, one day, our dev team will figure out a way to make it possible for customization and the UI to handle more options for those.
Anyways... Yeah, nothing wrong with sharing an opinion, mine just differs from it. I don't mind it. And I love it. I just want more and more and more, hehe.

In my OP I really had in mind that sub-conscious level of hearing and seeing powers firing off, powers landing, enemies dropping, and you just *know*, without having to check any bars, that things are progressing smoothly and everyone's doing their part.
If it takes me a fraction of a second, then, after seeing a black disc expanding off a baddie, to decipher Was that Transfusion or Transference? *glance at bars - End is still kinda low - Health is topped off - that was Transfusion*...well OMG that took a whole fraction of a second! Totally NOT a big deal, but a bigger deal than if I didn't have to think about it at all. |
Basically, even with perfectly good power recognition, I still need my health, endurance and buff bars, because just what's incoming isn't wholly representative of what's already there.

while i find the sfx of buffs cool and all i've never relied on them to tell me what buffs i have engaged. i've always looked to my buff bar and now i also use the combat attributes to see where the numbers are at.
on the flip side, color customization has made it very easy to see when some of my debuffs are applied to enemies. like a bright pink "Darkest Night" toggle that i barely used to be be able to tell was applied.
Yes, you'll run into the occasional "bublegumpopstarPrincesscatgirlgigglesLOL" character with some awful neon pink, purple, and yellow coloring, but such is pretty rare.

That reminds me - about the only problem I can think of with the new custom colours is that several powers have IDENTICAL effects, which in the original powersets were different in colour only. Since people tend to make all their powers the same colour, you end up with multiple powers that all look identical. For instance, two fire shields you can't tell apart. It's not problematic in a practical sense, but it just looks bad.

You'd love my new kin. His kinetics powers are more colour-co-ordinated than they were. Transfusion being apple green, siphon power being blood red, speed boost being that aquaish colour that run speed enhancements are. Heh. I'm starting to love it myself.

Transference is skyblue, and Fulcrum shift is gold.
