First, and most importantly, pick a power set combination you find fun. The best character is the one that you have the most fun playing.

Second, download a build planner like this one. You can get an idea pretty quickly about power combinations, what level certain powers are available and how to enhancement them.

Third, do a little research. Take a read at the guides at the top of this forum. I'd say anything issue 10 or later is mostly still valid and even the earlier versions can give you an idea of what a particular power set combination is like.

Fourth, for basic questions like where to buy enhancements, etc. Visit paragonwiki.com. There are various different kinds of enhancements you can buy directly from stores: training, dual origin (DO) and single origin (SO). And some that must be crafted, invention origin (IO) or bought pre-crafted from the market (Wentworth's or Black Market). See this article for more details.

Fifth, welcome to the game.

Ok, now what is an IO?

"IO" is a player coined term for a type of enhancement called "Invention Origin". These have to be crafted (or bought from another player via Wentworths) instead of being dropped naturally like other enhancements or sold at a specific NPC store.

IOs are a more complicated beast than normal enhancements. You'd do well to ignore them for now, and only worry about them once you've personally gotten better at the game.

Oh, and Crimson demands you play this arc-> Twisted Knives (MA Arc #397769)

Since you are posting in the Controller forums, you might be interested in making a controller. Take a look at my Illusion/Radiation guide, with the link to it in my signature below. I have included a lot of basic information for new players, including a section about the different types of enhancements.

An Illusion/Radiation Controller is a very good first controller. It is pretty easy to understand the concepts and to build an effective character. Read through my guide, and it will be easier.

Everyone has different favorites. I prefer controllers. One of my buddies prefers Tanks, and another prefers Scrappers. Another is better at blasters. Try out lots of things, read the guides and the in-game information. And have fun.

LOCAL MAN! The most famous hero of all. There are more newspaper stories about me than anyone else. "Local Man wins Medal of Honor." "Local Man opens Animal Shelter." "Local Man Charged with..." (Um, forget about that one.)
