Ultra-mode video card shopping guide

For those of you who are graphics card-savvy (for I know about as much about graphics cards as your average silk worm), is this likely to mean that the requirement for Ultra Mode is less than they originally thought, or that this specific graphics card is particularly wonderful at running it? Either works for me, I just wanna know what to peek for.

Excellent performance from the 5770 eh? Well, I'm pleased to hear that, since it's what I have now. I -was- planning to snag a pair of 5870s (I found them locally, on the cheap - no, I'm not telling. They're mine), but this is good news all the same. Thanks for the update, Positron.

I understand it to mean that, on the ATI side of things, the performance of the 57xx series is markedly better than had been anticipated, and the expectations for the 58xx series, in lieu of that, are quite high.

In other words: Requirements, no less. Performance per unit, better than we'd thought.

Ahh, thanks a ton.

Generally it means that you won't notice any difference between using one card or using two in SLI mode.

I see this to mean that Ultra mode is very shader intensive. The Radeon 5000 series is excelling in this area because they are built to handle more shader intensive tasks (DX11 has a lot of important shader features). For buying a new card if the 5770 is performing well as a mainstream card it is possible that the 5750 or even the 5670 (unlikely) could be able to handle Ultra mode at some level. Don't quote me on it but it seems logical based on the performance of the cards.

But really I would try and wait until March or April as Nvidia will hopefully release some new cards. They probably won't be in the 5770 price range but they could push down prices on Radeon cards.

Thanks very much for the update!

This is why I did what I did.

I have a 295 as my dedicated graphics card, and my old 260 as my dedicated PhysX card...

Ultra Mode is gonna be so beautiful.

I have an 8800GTS so I am also wondering how the 8800 series Nvidia cards will handle Ultra Mode.

You will have to try it out yourself, but it looks like you might - I stress might - be able to use UM on the absolute lowest of settings.

According to the very first post in this thread, they don't. A GeForce 9800GT is required for the minimum features of Ultra Mode.

You might be able to run it on the lowest settings with a ridiculous amount of lag or something.

A 8500 probably won't be able to run Ultra mode in any appreciable manner.

Since an 8800 GT is virtually the same as a 9800 GT the 8800 GTX should perform slightly better than a 9800 GT.

Perfect_Pain just hope that they get SLI working so that 295 works fully.

While you're working with them, any chance of updating the City of Heroes Physx implementation to recognize and use the NVidia versions of Physx?

Yes, I know that there's not much difference between the hardware accelerated versions and using the CPU to handle particle physics, and yes I know that Ultra Mode's updates aren't about changing the Physx engine.

I'm just sayin'.... while you're talking to NVidia.... let us use the newer Physx drivers, please.

Awesome. Feel so much more confident about my 5850 now.

On twitter Posi told me there is no current laptop that will be able to play Ultra Mode on high settings... I was thoroughly let down...

That's a pity...I was really hoping my 9800m GTX would at least cut it on the "reduced features" option mentioned for the lower-end desktop cards.

I was thinking at the time of that twitter conversation >.> that I was gonna buy a new laptop specifically for Going Rogue, and I was gonna spend $ for it.

But when I heard/read nothing would do it, I was like

I picked up a GTX 275 for $189 not too long ago on sale at Best Buy of all places.

Positron,

I sent you a pm but I do not know of you auto block those or read them so I'll post here too.

Could you get with your fellow staff and double check on what operating systems are also being testing with your main post here? Will using windows xp instead of vista or 7 hurt performance any in going rogue? I've noted so far that xp is still better for gaming in all of my experiences. Just wanting to know.

Thanks.

Windows 7 is excellent for gaming, it really kicks XP's butt into the ground.

I do hope they test for all OS, but Win7 FTW for sure.
