Defenses added?
I believe it works like this if you are attacked by a power that is melee/lethal the enemies chance to hit rolls twice. Once for the Melee, and once for the lethal damage, so if either one of those misses all the damage is negated. But I'm not 100% positive on that
The highest applicable Defense is what is used. When both values are the same, I'm not precisely sure which one is picked, but it doesn't really matter in that case, one gets picked.

mmmmmm, I'm gonna have to say no on that one.

With all due respect, when someone comes here looking for answers, it's best not to guess and/or speculate. You have it wrong and Lemur has it right.

Mechanically, the type(s) of damage delt have nothing to do with the type of attack. Foe example, Fireball is attack typed AoE/Fire(checks versus Fire and AoE defense), but it deals smashing damage as well as fire.
Now here is a question that i havent seen at all and was wondering. If i were to have a toon with 16% S/L Defense AND 16% Melee/ranged/AoE Defense. Are the 2 defenses added because the melee/ranged/AoE attack is also S/L damage as well. How does this work with melee/ranged/AoE attacks having S/L/F/C/E/N/P damage with it.

Castle could, if he wanted to, make a ranged single target attack that deals fire damage attack typed melée/psi.

lol that is not what im asking but it was answered by lemur. i was asking if Melee/Ranged/AoE defense is added to S/L/F/C/E/N/P defense since they are all part of the same attacks. But thanks for the help guys.

Edit: Ya Fireball is a Ranged AoE/Fire/Smashing attack but i was asking if All 3 of the defenses against those are added or not.

I was just trying to be helpful, this is how I was told it worked. Obviously I was misled but for all i knew it could have been right. I didn't cause any damage by trying to answer the question because I knew if I was wrong someone would catch it and correct me, I was at least responsible enough to say "I'm not 100% on this" instead of stating it as fact un-like other people on these forums. Nothing wrong with trying to be helpful, but i guess next time I'll just keep my mouth shut =\

No No keep answering questions your in the right in my opinion. Ironblade should not have said that. Sounded really bad on his part. Thanks for the help btw.

The way i see it if someone is wrong, just correct them and move on, no need to call anyone out, unless their intentions were in the wrong place of course.

No, Fire Ball is not Ranged/AoE/Fire/Smashing. Rajani was pointing out that Fire Ball is typed with AOE_Attack/Fire_Attack, but the effects of the power are to deal Fire damage and Smashing damage.

It is important to separate Attack Vectors from Power Effects. Despite the fact that many of the Attack Vectors are named identically to Damage effects, they are not the same thing.
Attack Vectors directly map to Defense Types:
Smashing_Attack => Smashing Defense
Lethal_Attack => Lethal Defense
Energy_Attack => Energy Defense
Negative_Energy_Attack => Negative Energy Defense
Fire_Attack => Fire Defense
Cold_Attack => Cold Defense
Psionic_Attack => Psionic Defense
Melee_Attack => Melee Defense
Ranged_Attack => Ranged Defense
AOE_Attack => AOE Defense
Note the lack of 'Toxic_Attack' and 'Toxic Defense' - these two things do not exist.
Damage effects of powers map to Resistance types:
Smashing damage => Smashing Resistance
Lethal damage => Lethal Resistance
Energy damage => Energy Resistance
Negative Energy damage => Negative Energy Resistance
Fire damage => Fire Resistance
Cold damage => Cold Resistance
Psionic damage => Psionic Resistance
Toxic damage => Toxic Resistance
There are also damage types such as "Unique1" which have no matching Resistance type. There is also "Base Defense", which is added to all defense values, and used against attacks without any attack vector. Base Defense is hard to come by; you'll most commonly see it from Defense Debuffs, and from [Personal Force Field].
