If you feel like being a big shot, and throwing some Real Money around, here's your chance. (Mods: This may be cross-posting but, as far as I can tell, there's ONE place on the forums where this is mentioned.)

Apparently you get a shiny gold title as well.

What a great idea.

Badging in a PvP zone?

If you are treasure hunting on a battlefield wearing an enemy uniform, there is a high probability that you will be attacked.

by the way, lest I misinform, there are three charities being supported by this. Child's Play (games for sick kids stuck in the hospital), Donate Games (donate your old games, which they sell to raise money for orphan disease research), and Operation Gratitude (care packages to soldiers.)

I don't wish to promote one over the other two.

Only one of the three seems 100% geared toward US only, as the other two have raised funds for their cause around the world and even if it were US only, the research results would surely be beneficial world wide.

Also - charities are not all worldwide, so it isn't so horrible to have a charity that funds X in location Y.

I am an ebil markeeter and will steal your moneiz ...correction stole your moneiz. I support keeping the poor down because it is impossible to make moneiz in this game.

Every charity has to be based somewhere. Just because a charity doesn't extend beyond its country of origin doesn't necessarily equate to a '**** foreigners' attitude. Also, did you actually click through to the site and read the descriptions?

Quote:
Founded in February 2009, Donate Games is committed to easing the pain of patients suffering from orphan and rare diseases like Chordoma, Progeria, and Rett Syndrome through the donation and resale of used games as well as cash donations. Proceeds fund orphan disease research and creating support networks for patients around the world.

Child's Play is a community based charity grown and nurtured from the game culture and industry. Since it's founding in 2003 by Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins of the online comic strip Penny Arcade, Child's Play has donated more than $5 million in toys, games, books, and cash for sick children in hospitals across the U.S. and the world.
Emphasis mine. I mean, one of them goes towards funding disease research. Unless you seriously expect said researchers to hide their results under their bed and say 'mine!' whenever anyone not from the US comes by, I fail to see how that in any way equates to '**** foreigners'.

Nihilii: Nothing's stopping you from bringing Child's Play to your own country, wherever that may be. They started in Seattle with, I think, three hospitals. Now there's one in England, a number in Canada, in Australia, and it looks like one in Egypt.

Everything starts somewhere.

The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation spends most of its money in central and southern Africa. Assuming that you're somewhere else than Africa, do you take that personally as well?

Outstanding Idea!!!

Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

What a great time of year to show that you can really be a hero

I've got to say, when I think of who is in need of a bit of help in the world today, buying snacks for the armed forces of the most powerful nation on Earth comes pretty low down the list.

One wonderful facet of charitable contributions is that they're totally optional. Choose to support the noble causes in which you believe, and allow others to do the same.

Thank you to the organizers of this effort for encouraging the spirit of giving!

It's a shame that this thread will be locked soon.

I will be working to bring Child's Play to the IWK Children's Hospital in Nova Scotia myself as soon as my current financial slump is taken care of (sorry but my own kids come first). I've spent time in children's hospitals and having the kind of entertainment Child's PLay provides can really change the experience for a child.

Portions of this thread dealing with political controversy have been removed.

Let me address this however very very briefly. When this event was still in the planning stages and the Wentworths chose Operation Gratitude I did raise an eyebrow since there is potential controversy, but the Wentworths chose this charity and it is their event so I did not raise any objections. Ultimately everyone must act according to their own conscience, whether that means donating to another charity, donating to Operation Gratitude, or not donating at all either through disinterest, financial difficulty, or because the choice of charities offends.

Any political discussion is still prohibited by the Message Forum Rules and Guidelines and as such will be removed. If your feelings about this event are influenced by politics, I would recommend not discussing this on the forums.
