Blackout postponed
New toys are fun. No problems on postponing it man, maybe it will give some freinds of mine enough time to come back for this one.
P.S. I'm really jealous that you can get a new rig. I am stuck in laptop college limbo for the next few years.
Well, my trusty computer decided to give me a late birthday present tonight! The hard drive has a case of the "CLICKS of DOOM". I grabed my iPhone, and looked up what might be the problem...no bueno. Seems that the hard drive was on it's last leg, and now I'm computerless.
If I can get it to boot (not looking good so far), I should be able to run a CHKDSK, and might be able to get things working. Fingers crossed, but I wanted you to know before Saturday. |
My advice? DO NOT boot off of the hard disk. DO NOT run CHKDSK. If you have the option of connecting the disk to another computer, do that. Back up anything you can onto a removable hard disk, DVD-Rs, or whatever you can grab. Because the more the disk runs, the more data you'll probably loose. Forever.
If you don't have that option, and you have important stuff on the disk, pay for a professional to back up what he/ she can.
Of course, if you don't have any important data on there, like family pictures or your music collection, chuck the hard disk out the window and buy a new one.
sorry to hear that man
dont worry it will all wait for you and no need to apologise, you do all that stuff off you own back so we all owe thanks to you anyway.
just think about the new toy
Noooo i cant make it now!
Sorry to hear you have a dead HDD, Py. Happened to me, and to a friend, so I know how it is. I was able to save my stuff, but his was already past the point of saving.
Since it's the end of the year, NewEgg should have some great deals on HDDs. Just don't make the same mistake I did, and make sure you know if your compy uses a SATA or EIDE HDD before you order... >.<

Biggest Troll on the forums? I'll give you a hint:

If you can get a hold of a usb external hard drive, you might copy over all you can, if you can access your computer again. Might save having to DL and patch CoH and stuff like that.
One other option, and I've not personally tried this, so I don't know what hurdles their may be with this, but just a thought:
Go to http://www.carbonite.com/ (or another online backup) and sign up for their free trial. Cram whatever you can there, then restore it to another hard drive.

I'm really trying not to throw it out the window at this point. I spent a lot of time hyping up this event, and creating a MA storyline for it. All for this to happen. Sorry to those that had planned on participating...I promise that we will have this event. ChristopherRobin...get those specs for Ultra Mode ready, quote me somewhere near what we had talked about, and I'll have you an answer by middle of next week. Daddy's gettin' a new toy! Sorry again guys... Pyro |
one that will smack Ultra Mode around and tell it ...betta have mah moneh!

As for the hard disk clicks, Obsidius is correct DO NOT run checkdisk. CD (checkdisk) is bad in your case for two reasons
#1. Mechanical clicking is a sign of physical hardware failure and CD can only repair (some) types of software failures so
it will not solve your problem... in fact by forcing such an intense scan of the whole disk it
can greatly speed up the onset of permanent failure.
#2. CD is data destructive in it's repair attempts. i.e. what it can't make sense of it deletes. I have much better professional
grade tools that are not destructive and attempt to recover and correctly restore what cannot be read.
The clicks of doom (assuming you have correctly diagnosed it) usually mean it's just a matter of time. The only reason
you should turn on your machine at this point is for data backup purposes. Get what you can from the disk and power it off.
The next step is you have to decide how important the data (what you haven't backed up yet) is to you. If it's worth having
back then you should look at either a data recovery service (they can be insanely expensive) or putting the drive
into an external enclosure (spearate from that computer and with it's own power source) and attempt to pull an image of
the drive onto another disk. If you are not comfortable with doing this I have all the hardware and software tools to
do either for you and I have personally recovered more than 20 damaged drives (4 of them were IBM's with the click of doom)
with about a 95% data recovery rate, we can discuss this further by way of PM's (or if that was your one and only comp
then when you next check your messages at the library or on a friends machine PM me your number and I'll talk ya through
your options over the phone).
I'll get you back up and running one way or another buddy.

Clicks of Doom are very bad. they usually indicate a physical head crash.
My advice? DO NOT boot off of the hard disk. DO NOT run CHKDSK. If you have the option of connecting the disk to another computer, do that. Great advice Obsidius...thank you.
Good News: 1) Got it to boot without the DOOM CLICKS 2) Found a portable 1 GB memory stick 3) Managed to transfer all Tax Info, resumes, wedding pictures, etc. 4) Made sure all important Art was on my DA page Bad News: 1) CLICKS of DOOM during CoH log in (I know, I know...I just wanted to see if it would do it) Thanks again for the heads up Obsidius...now I'll just get a sledge hammer and delicately remove the sucker. Might just take the tower down to the local Geek Squad place, and charge them $5 per swing of the hammer (picture Office Space scene). I'll keep you posted! |
Meantime I got several spec outs ready to go within your price range I just need to ask you some questions to custom
tailor the best setup for you and I'll get cracking.

sales coming and Black Friday less than a week away plus with the new Windows 7 launched (with native
support for TRIM) and the first DX11 videocards hitting the shelves getting a custom built PC has never looked better.
I have two builds already scheduled for the week after BF and Pyro's is looking to be #3 but there is still time to get in on the deals.
If you were ever thinking about getting something custom now is the time!

Contact me ASAP so you don't miss out.
