First off let me say hello to all the pro doms out there. I am looking to make my first dom and am in need of much guidance and opinions. Id like to play a dom for level 50 content, not so much for the grind. Id like a build that would serve well for speed ITFs and soloing. Looking for a build/combo that has decent defence/resistance and permadom if possible. Infamy is not an issue (excluding PvP IOs). For i plan on gutting out my only IOd villain who has lots of goodies on him.

Im not a big fan of gravity or earth primaries, but i would give them a shot if i had a build that blew my mind away. Im open to all secondaries since ive never played any of them.

Plant control as a primary for dominators is good(seeds of confusion, carrion creepers etc) and for your assault i'd say either elec assault(for end drain and the volt sentinel, plus decent damage) or energy assault which got a good damage buff out of all dom assault sets, or even stone assault is good too(seismic smash FTW! )

Welcome to the Dark side my friend! In terms of good defense and Permadom I'd recommend the following Primaries:

Mind, Gravity and Earth- these are possibly the "safest" of the primaries, with Plant right up there as well (thanks to seeds at lvl 8). Mind gives you almost too many toys and grav and earth give you tons of "soft" control (KB, Stuns etc). These sets also tae the widest range of IOs that have Recharge bonuses to achieve Permadom.

As for Assault sets? I'd go with either Energy, Psi, Earth or Elec. Energy got a HUGE buff, Psi became FAR more balanced and no longer is a sucky set that relies on 1 godly power- and Elec and Earth are strong sets out of the box.

Mind/Psi or Mind Energy is the easiest route to Perma, but any combo is achievable.. even Fire/Fire.

I disagree on Gravity being "Up there in terms of safety" as it take 18 levels to get an AoE hold on a looong recharge timer, then another 8 before you actually get your every mob control power, a power that if you plan on teaming alot can actually annoy some people even when played well.

Mind is very safe in terms of soloing with Mass hypnosis, available at level 8 and the number of ST options at your disposal but it does suffer from lack of every mob control until level 26 as well.

My votes for primary are Earth, Plant or Ice. In terms of secondary you almost can't go wrong, as its more of a matter of preference.
/Earth, Has a very "smashy" feel that adds more knockdowns when paired with sets like Earth and Ice.
/Fire, Good set in terms of AE damage, consume for energy management.
/Psi, Is very good now in the early levels as opposed to before, AoE damage, and Drain Psyche.
/Thorns, AoE damage with an exotic damage type.
/Electricity, Quick, Good damage, Sleep effect sometimes goes off on your attacks.
/Energy, High single target, low AoE Damage, added stuns.
/Ice Decent in AoE, Slows, Chilling embrace, and decent in ST damage.(Cool Swords as well :P)

My first Dom was a Fire/Psi and I grew tired of him after using him countless hours for farming. My Mind/Nrg brought new light to the AT for me, so much to the point I leveled up a Plant/Fire shortly after.

Mind/Nrg is amazing permadom'd, close to overpowered if slotted correctly IMO. My Dominate is slotted with 2 hold procs, that means w/ domination running. It's a chance for a mag 10 hold in one shot. His build ended up with more recharge then my fire/psi for about half the price tag. Being that Mind can shove some cheap purple sets and energy assault is a nice mix of ranged and melee powers.

Haven't got to IOing my Plant/Fire, due to having so many other projects to complete. My build on Mids is doable once I get the cash saved for him.

I'd like to know how Gravity's AoE hold is the only one with a "looong recharge timer" of 240s base? According to Mid's, ALL of the AoE holds are exactly the same recharge. Sure, Dimensional Shift is the lvl 18 power, but it could come in handy with soloing. I've done Gravity to 50 twice and it was a blast both times.

I'm obviously NOT a fan of Ice. Ice is a one-trick pony with Ice Slick. And forget about that when you team with a PuG dom who lovingly spams their AoE immob, negating your Ice Slick - well, except the rare Gravity dom... The rest of Ice is pretty much skippable. Arctic Air is an end hog and it's confuse component is shoddy at best - even 3 slotted. Jack Frost is substandard compared to the Singularity or even Poo Man. The only valid complaints that can be made about Gravity are Dimensional Shift and the ridiculous animation of Propel.

The best team and solo friendly set is Plant. It gives the safety of Seeds that you'll need solo and it works well on teams. The only real skippable powers in Plant are the Spirit Tree and possibly Roots. Fire, Earth and Mind are also very team friendly, however they seem to come into their own at later levels. So I'd say team/solo friendly:

1. Plant
2. Mind
3. Fire/Earth/Gravity
4. Ice

As for secondaries, you really can't go wrong with any of them, although Earth is the new shiny. If you do choose Mind or Gravity, they can be a little single-targetty at lower levels, so you may want to pair it with an AoE type secondary like Fire, Psi or Thorns.

Just note that this is my opinion, so feel free to take what you will from it.

Sorry for not clarifying I guess. You're right every control set has a long recharging AoE hold, however every other control set besides mind has established other means of control with an every mob power by the time they get it(and Illusion but that is still aleviated by alternating between flash and PA until spooky is available). Gravity does not, and so therefore is even more affected by the long recharge timer because other than the AoE immob its the only AoE control effect you have. Wormhole won't even come until your over halfway through your leveling career. In terms of gravity not having that many problems I think the fact that a Dark/Dark Corruptor, revamped stalkers, TA corruptors, and countless others can outperform you in controlling for over half your career is a problem.

Mind/Fire. You can't go wrong by pairing the purest control primary with a secondary of raw damage.

Welcome to doms.

Most 50-level farmers tend to be Fire/Psy dominators.

Mind probably has the best overall control. Mind/Energy and Mind/Elec are popular builds.

Plants has good control and damage, and it doesn't require a whole lot of powers to work, so you can pimp out your secondary. Carrion Creepers and Seeds of Confusion are great. Works well with just about any secondary.

Earth Control offers a lot of AoE mezzes and holds, as well as defense debuffs to make sure your powers dont' miss, making it great for melee-oriented doms. Earth/Earth doms are a blast.

Ice is good for lowering speed and recharge. My brother's Ice/Ice dom is a nasty little monster, especially when teamed up with my Earth/Earth dom.
