Little help with a concept character?
Theme wise all 3 would be good choices. For pure survivability in my opinion i would say invulnerbility.
You could also use elec armor. You could imagine your toon has the powers of an electric eel. just a thought.
Agreed. I like the concept. I personally am not a fan of Invuln, not knocking the set. That being said... I think Invuln, Energy(color tinted to blue)(not as bad as it's rep) Dark(color tinted to blue) or electric, with Devil Dingo's electric eel suggestion would be the way to go.
I have a SS/Energy brute, LOADS of fun.
Nada on the elec armor thing. I'm trying to make something more akin to Aquaman and that's just pushing it too far from theme for my liking. Energy does seem very tempting as I've never played the set and despite hearing alot of negative rep on it I've also heard people who've played it say it's fantastic and fun. If it seems like a survivable and not entirely hair-pulling combination then I may go with that.
Anybody else? Still wanting to get a few more opinions before I pin down a choice.
Invul can be a pretty stout choice, and you can easily set the FX to minimal to take any kind of glow away if desired. It also goes well with the Aquaman based theme, as he was/is durable and has a healing factor.
Don't I know you???
Both EA and INVUl have their pros and cons. I thinking the biggest con on both is no psi protection. The biggest pro to EA is never needing to worry about endurance. It is not that hard or to soft cap defenses either. There are several skippable powers on /EA too(energy protection, conserve power, and possibly overload). This will make it easier for you to fit in your mako patrons and the fighting pool.
Invulnerbility has major end problems....but with tough you can have 70% resistance to smash/lethal. Also with alot of Io help you can even soft cap your defenses with invincibility running.
Another cool thing about your ocean themed toon is that 3 travel sets all fit your concept very well. You can go fly like Sub Mariner or Namorita, Super speed(You swim really fast and that translates to superspeed on land and hasten allows you to resist the heaviness of water), or super jump(your resistance to the weight of water gives you vast jumping ability on land).
You could also go with Dark Armor and set the colors to a blue/green. The animations kind of look like rippling water if you set the colors right. Dark only has a knockback hole also which is very easy to fill. Skip CoF since it wouldn't fit the concept, but everything else would.
Just me. I'd go Invuln.
Currently have an SS/Inv Brute (running him with minimal FX) and it's just sweet.
I could see playing with the light or dark auras (if it's a brute, go with a dark greenish aura, or a not-so bad Brute...blue/gray).
My vote goes for /Dark. Respectable resists to everything (so the -Def portion of the Rage crash won't suck as bad for you as it would on a Defense-based set), thematic cohesion with the water-like effects of the blueish-tinted auras, the only problem I see is that you'll probably be hurting for endurance more than other sets, at least for part of your career.
IIRC, there's a costume aura that resembles water (or possibly steam/a mist) dripping off your person available at 30. So should you choose another secondary, that can fill in at least some thematic appearance details.

have you considered Dark melee/Inv, would make a very good tanking brute.
Siphon life adds a good top up heal and midnight grasp could be coloured to look ilke under sea fonds. Dark consumption helps smooth over endurance issues.
The to-hit debuffs from the DM attacks work nicely together with the def from inv.
Why not SR? Did you try and tint it blue or aqua? It could also be some kind of fish sense. I like the SS/SR combo as long as you get hasten and stack Rage to avoid the crash.
My other choice would be SS/Elec. You could do the electric eel thing, or tint it blue and consider it the "calling on the sea" thing after getting Static shield. If you don't like that, then I'd say invul.
Dark armor and SS both use so much endurance that I'd be afraid to play a character that combines the two. Shield would work fine, but SS and shield don't work together so perfectly and magically that I'd demand using it over everythign else, and you already have a shield toon.
Okay, so here's my dilemma. I was poking around the character creator and got it in my head that I NEEDED to use this costume I came up with for an Atlantean/Aquaman style character, and the best idea I could pin down that I'd actually want to play was a Brute with Super Strength, and yes, Leviathan Mastery. I've heard all of the talk that it's a horrible set for anyone but I figure if they bothered to put it in it can't be all that terrible, plus attacking people with sharks and waterspouts is just cool (and thematically appropriate).
This brings me to my issue. I'm one of those people who can't play a character comfortably if they don't make at least a little thematic sense (Power Customization has helped this but I'm still having issues mixing sets. Why does my blaster only use short range fire attacks but lobs ice? That sort of stuff), but I can make this work with power colors. I have Super Strength colored blue to give the impression that she's calling on the power of the ocean, but my secondary is giving me a ridiculous time of making up my mind.
I already have a SS/WP brute so I don't want to use willpower again. I've rulled out Fiery Aura, Electric Armor and Stone Armor for obvious reasons. I'm not terribly keen on Shield because I'm currently working on a SS/Shield tank blueside. I'm leaning in the general direction of Dark Armor, Energy Aura or Invulnerability. The hitch here is that I need something that can fit the theme. Dark works the best visually in my opinion, when I toggle on a blue Obsidian Shield it even looks like there are bubbles floating around the character, and all the rest evoke thoughts of flowing water. Energy Aura can get a similar effect but not as strong, and Invulnerability can be an abstract concept like Super Strength tinted blue, she's just calling on the power of the ocean.
So, of all the brute secondaries, excluding Fiery Aura, Electric Armor, Stone Armor, or Shield, what do you think is the best to use here? I'm looking for something that can survive well and be fun to play rather than a chore, but it has to be able to fit to the theme. If one of the other sets can be tweaked with power customization to look ocean-y then by all means let me know how and if it's going to make a good pairing to SS. Keep in mind also that I've got my heart set on Leviathan Mastery for sharks and coralax guardian, so I'm going to be filling gaps in powersets with those powers. Any help is appreciated.
