itt: we discuss Music

This is the Music Thread.

Everyone listens to music, unless they are cranky and ornery old men. (Sup, Scribe).

This is the thread where we discuss the music we like, share what we're listening to and generally talk about how music is awesome.

To get the ball rolling:

Maybe you like epic progressive rock with long masturbatory solos?

There is music for you!

Maybe you like vidja game music that reminds you of when you were young, because you are so very, very old?

There is also music for you!

Maybe you can appreciate some animes and/or are a satan worshipping monster?

Music also exists for you!

Or maybe you like things a little slower, where you can really hear the luxurious Old Testament quality of the beard in the vocals?

Totally music for you.

Or hell, just a plain old bad-*** rock song.

Awww jeahh

Or maybe you are all about chicks who do music and have the biggest Thing for Irish accents?

yesssssss

New-ish music is also good times!

See? Yes there is more awesome British music but I was working alphabetically okay, god, MOM

Old music is not always terrible music!

classic as all hell

Maybe you can enjoy non-English music even though it is foreign and that is scary!

Awesome!

Double yay!

That should do to get us started.

As for me:

Currently obsessing about:

DJ Lobsterdust. Dude does hella awesome mash-ups. Don't believe me? Well okay first of all my feelings are hurt and maybe you should think before you oh god shut up I'm not crying okay look here

yes okay fine its an AMV, ignore that (although Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo are pretty good times)

Electro more your thing? Rock on.

Stone cold making an Awesome Thing out of two Terrible Things, hell yes doggies

Discuss, people. Share your tastes.

Darn you!

Yes I totally love quiet stuff like this (Iron & Wine, Sufjan Stevens, Rosie Thomas)

I also enjoy some rock, typically with some sort of 'surprise' in it like a climax time signature change or key change (The Arcade Fire, The Beatles, Rogue Wave)

And sometimes I like stuff to bob my head to (MGMT, Spoon)

Haha, only teasing. I think I&W are awesome too. Not a huuuge fan of Sufjan Stevens, but I'm told I would like Arcade Fire.

Oh *****, awesome. Also I was gonna post a GB link but wasn't sure how the etiquette on that kind of thing works since his sets are obviously way too long for Youtube and I don't want a tonne of randomly-curious-but-not-really-all-that-interested people to nuke his servers inadvertently.

Gwar show was awesome, green blood eveywhere, Metal RULES!!! \m/

Well, that is all over the map, kinda like what I like ... kinda.

I would pick this Corrs song, breathless, over the one you chose.

They sound so much like the Primatives, which also fit the old song group.

You had foreign music, how about

German hard rock

Swiss rap?

French pop

Of course, they don't compare to the classics, but this is a different classic because

who can compare to Robert Johnson

Except maybe the Black Keys

And finally, for now, my current favorite

Neutral Milk Hotel

I'll visit country, soft rock and musicals tomorrow.

"But what about hard rock. You don't have anything linked for that"

Ok, one hard rock link for everyone, sorry it isn't more current but AC/DC just kills and this is my favorite, Live Wire

heh - genius thread....
no one's done a music thread yet?

<---loves almost everything but hardcore rap and country music.... and i do have some hardcore rap lol

Mostly, i listen to Metal, Alt Rock, Industrial, and alot of different electronic styles (techno, trance, dark electro/darkwave, future pop)
Fav artists - Sarah Brightman (ya know she did a small cover on one of HIM's songs - Join Me In Death), HIM, The Prodigy, Muse, Placebo, Tool, Metallica, VNV Nation, Mindless Self Indulgence, Avenged Sevenfold, Apocalyptica, Atreyu, Dir en Grey, Malice Mizer, Lucuna Coil, Otep, Arch Enemy, Kittie

here's some bands i'd like to bring to the front -

ARCH ENEMY (Angela Gossow proves that metal isnt just for males, women can bring in Power, Energy, Strength, & stage presence - Otep's been doing that for some time though). I played some of her music at work and peeps were like, "That's a chick?" Ok, she does NOT use a distortion microphone...
I want her as my battle maiden & goddess... my Joan of Arc

We Will Rise(live) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxD4Ruf68bU (insta-goosebumps!)
Ravenous(live) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hQ6oY9xd8c
Dead Bury Their Dead(live) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrBeKSyRh5I

cant get enough of miss Angela Gossow? No one can!
she slays the reporter's mic! - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubHOHi9Bzug&NR=1
cool interview, screams in the end - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKuRDDy5GSo
group interview - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xC_gZ0U8hlo

Always been fond of the "prettyboy" / "crossgender" look, back in the day of David Bowie. Glam rock had progressed in different stages, and Japan seems to like to "radicalize" american media, and twist it into their own. Funny thing, in anime/manga art you see perfect-looking peeps w/ crazy hair-do's and extravagent fashion..... its REAL!

Prob the style that stands out the most is "Visual Kei" style, japanese extreme version of "glam" pop/rock style, where the males are very feminine/adrogynous styled. The stand-out group of them all is MALICE MIZER, a Jrock band basically. Mana who is basically the visual & costume designer, bassist, and musical composer, is reknown for his gothic-victorian styling, and is credited to the Gothic-Lolita movement, and have modeled his own fashion in many magazines. Most peeps mistake Mana as a female model in fact :P Gackt was their lead vocalist, and also a very beautiful man, though sticking to a more masculine style usually. Malice Mizer is a band you definitely want to watch live cuz its basically a full-scale theatrical production....
Mana & Gackt - http://i1.jpopasia.com/gal/8243.jpg

SyuniKiss(live) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyCLLOs8d9E (just awsome)
Le Ciel(live) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v12i6vJj988 (so dramatic & sad)
Au Revoir(live) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tonOnQmCMyU (sticky tune)

I have a wierd taste in music, it goes from Pantera to Jeff Buckley to any form of Trance (I'd list artist names but those b*tches confuse the sh*t outta me ) and on occasion a lil' Eminem, though any other form of (c)rap sucks, IMO.

I've taken a liking to a local band from my home town in West Oz, Karnivool.
This was the first song of thiers i heard and instantly fell in love with 'em.
Fade:

Couple of other nice songs of thiers,
Set Fire to the Hive:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUt-jrfLhnc
Lifelike:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WK-tZvcE8N4
Themata:

They have a new-ish album out called Sound Awake, which has a coupler sweet songs but i haven't bought it yet so I dont really know if its any good.

Support 'em and go out and buy thier stuff!

I love Dream Theater so much. Not a huge fan of Systematic Chaos, but Black Clouds and Silver Linings was much better.

It's hard for me to pick a favourite DT album because they've all got great songs I love. My favourite song would probably be The Glass Prison or maybe Voices.

You ever listened to Liquid Tension Experiment, Kay? A friend recommended them but I just haven't been able to get into it.

I like them, but mostly like the older stuff, like Sonne, Du Hast, Feuer Frei and Engel.

Let me know if the new stuff is any good.
