I do find it interesting that they no longer show subscription numbers. Seeing as how many of NCs games are reliant on subscription retention to show profit, I can't see this change in their financial reports as a good sign. It seems like they are trying too hard to point out how huge Aion is in order to distract from how all their other games have slipped.

But, tbh, the dialogues tyle (note, not the dialogue itself but the style) was fairly close to some of the stuff from the old G1 cartoon. But yes, Bay does go far OTT with the slightly corny American humour.
Just listening to them talk put me off the movie. I was so very happy when I thought one of the twins was eaten.

Of course, I think sometimes we get too caught up in subscriber numbers too. We don't know what their break even point is, nor what their realistic goal numbers are (nevermind "dream goal" numbers). Folks might cry DOOOOM even when the numbers are actually well within what they consider good/acceptable.

I agree that folks tend to cry doom prematurely at the slightest slip in numbers. However, when a company that in the past has relied heavily on subscription retention suddenly completely ommits subscription numbers from their financial reports, it tends to throw up some red flags.

As Catwhoorg pointed out, no other MMO publisher is forthcoming with their subscription numbers. NCsoft is simply falling into line with the others. We were fortunate to get exact numbers for as long as we did, really.

I was getting nervous, having been through Fred Meyer, Target and Walmart's bins this week and not seeing a single copy of CoH. Christmas is getting close.

Edit: I've seen our product at those stores before. Just not recently.

The lack of shelf presence is a constant annoyance with this game. I think Best Buy has CoH, if not in a box they should have the cards (you know the jet pack ones).

Whereas I believe I saw the last time I went to Gamestop (we've got two of them here that carry PC games). The Wal-Mart here isn't so great with PC titles/MMO's, though. Throw in online purchasing through NCSoft, Steam*, Direct2Drive or online retailers like Amazon or Gamestop? I think its very easy to get.

*Hey, I'd love to see Impulse have NCSoft for games. Just sayin'

We need to get some shelf space for the boxes, not just in niche places like Gamestop, EBgames and such, but in big-box stores where the grannies are likely to purchase stuff for the young'uns. Any place that has the competition's MMOs should have ours.
At the places I listed, I saw CO, WoW and the rest of the usual suspects.
The shopping season is soon, so let's get out there and kick some :0 !!

That's probably CoH's BIGGEST weakness by far. In the five years I've been with the game, I've only ever heard of it outside of the game's own forums once and only once. I read a (positive) article about it on SomethingAwful, which got me to start doing research. But outside of that? If I weren't already a subscriber, I wouldn't know the game existed. I've never seen copies of it in any store, I've never seen advertisements for it ANYWHERE, I've never heard it mentioned at all.

Right now, from everything I'm seeing, the only way to hear anything about City of Heroes is to be a subscriber to the game, which is kind of like... Well, does the light in the fridge stay on when you close the door?

CoH has maintained a consistent presence on the shelves of my local Best Buy since I picked up my copy at launch lo, those many years ago.

I've never quite understood the wailing and gnashing of teeth about the lack of "marketing" for the game. It's been out 5 years and was never one of the 800lb gorillas of the genre, I'm not sure what people expect out of NC.

The Nethergoat Archive: all my memories, all my characters, all my thoughts on CoH...eventually.

I'd expect there to be SOME means by which people could learn of the game outside of of out-and-out having an active player tell them about it. I don't expect to be seeing CoH adverts on prime time television, but I have literally never ever seen an ad for the game absolutely anywhere, be it on the 'net or in the real world. If I didn't know about this forum and didn't know people who play it (whom I met in-game, as well), I would never know the game exists.

I would like to see a *bit* more. I've finally seen web ads from NCSoft for COH in the past year or so, for example. I think the guest author program for the AE is a good thing to try, certainly! And updated fan kit might be nice, or ways to help promote the game with other interests... I'd love to see some sort of bundle deal where you could get a copy of COH, FRAPS and a reasonable video editor, for example. Still a bit niche-ish, I'm sure, but hey... let the fans of FRAPS and the editor promote the game too

You know, since CO and HERO Games will be working together, maybe seeing if Green Ronin would be horribly adverse to having some official stuff from NCSoft/Paragon Studios for Mutants and Masterminds might not be horrible, either. However
