Grav Troller?
Its a pretty good solo set.
Solo, it has Propel for very good damage-per-endurance, which is a solo Controller's biggest enemy. The long animation doesnt matter if you're facing a small group of enemies most of whom are held, in fact it helps slow down your End consumption in the teens, when this is often a problem.
Later on, Singularlity acts as a good tank for EB fights.
Above all, Gravity is a fun set, Propel and Wormhole are both very satisfying to use.
On a team it has some problems:
- AoE control is late. Wormhole comes at 26 instead of 12 for Flashfire/Stalagmites etc, and Dimension Shift jusy annoys teammates
- Propel takes so long to animate that you end up hitting already dead enemies
- Wormhole annoys some temmates due to the knockback or relocation throwing off their herding of Fulcrum-ing or whatever.
Even so, its not a total stinker on teams, maybe 80% as good as the best team sets for your entire career, with 12-26 being the tough spot.
I'm interested in making a grav but i've read a few unpleasant things about the set.
Is it a bad set to be relegated to thematic builds only or is it worthwhile as a solo troller? |
I have a couple of macros set up asking the team to wait here for a sec and I'll deliver a surprise, for Wormhole. Singy makes a hige difference in the character. I find that on teams, I mostly rely upon FR+CF for AoE control, with frequent Wormhole+Thunderclap+Crushing Field. I find that I rely more upon my secondary than with some primaries, but learning the unique tricks and strategies of Grav have been fun.
Overall, I like my Grav/Storm as more of a solo character. I can really pull out a lot of strategic tricks solo, as some of them take a few seconds to set up. Wormhole works much better when you are out of line of sight. Wormhole+Thunderclap+Crushing Field followed by Hurricane once the foes begin to break out of the stun, works really well as AoE control until I can pound the foes into mush with Grav.Dist.+Crush+Propel plus Lightning Storm. So I would say that Grav/Storm is a very good solo set. It may not kill as fast as others, but it does the job and it is fun to work out the strategy.
LOCAL MAN! The most famous hero of all. There are more newspaper stories about me than anyone else. "Local Man wins Medal of Honor." "Local Man opens Animal Shelter." "Local Man Charged with..." (Um, forget about that one.)

Allow me to suggest that Grav/Trick is an unusual in addition to being a rewarding combo. The mix of Grav and Trick early is relatively weak, but it finishes STRONG and gives you "tools" for just about any situation from Team-1 to Team-8. In fact, the mix of Grav and Trick leads you to the "horrible" problem of what powers are you NOT going to take so as to have some room left over for your epic pool after getting Stamina and your travel pool of choice.

Some of the early levels are a bit tough and a little slow.
Once you start coming into your AOE holds, it starts coming together.
And once you get Singularity, it quite literally can DOUBLE your effectiveness.
And, being a /Kin, my current build is just one endless fountain of endurance and Fulcrum Shift.

Grav/TA is a very interesting and tactic style of play, especially solo or on smaller teams. You actually feel like a proper controller, overseeing the battle and locking down and controlling enemies (compared to my other two high level controllers anyway, an Illusion/Storm: "Woo. Chaos" and a Fire/Rad: "Raar, smash and burn") The first 20 or so levels are a bit painful though.
L50s: Tanks: Cryofission - Ice/EM - Dr Celsius - Fire/Ice - Saint George - SD/SS | Controllers: Psichosis - Ill/Kin - Major Chaos - Ill/Stm | Scrappers - Neutron Crusader - DM/SR
Currently Levelling: Angelic Blade - BS/WP Scrapper | Seeds of Destruction - Plant/Kin Controller
LOL - Gravity in a nutshell; add controll from the secondary and be a proper controller!!

More the fact you can stand back and root and hold things in place, reposition them if needed and stack lots and lots of debuffs and mez on them. No toggles to worry about. No PBAOEs, no buffing of your allies needed. You focus on laying down layers of mez & debuff.
I really enjoy my Grav/Thermal troller. With newbie slotting, I quickly progressed to being able to hold down the entire group my duo was fighting, even without AoE holds - in fact, I really only use my AoE if we get ambushed and need setup time, or if I just want to layer another hold to tack down the boss more quickly.
And solo trick-or-treating has been extremely fun lately. Though every few clicks, I do run past the door to clear out some of the trash that accumulates.
I'm new-ish. Again.
@Kahzi. Pinnacle, mostly.
