I don't believe that trial accounts are restricted from using enhancements. More likely, the enhancements you have are not slottable in the powers you've selected. When you drag an enhancement, do any of the powers get a green ring around their slots? That indicates that the enhancement can be slotted.
As a test, get an Accuracy or Damage enhancement and see if can be put in an attack. Almost all attacks can take them.

There are several reasons that an enhancement can not be placed on a power, but the trial version is NOT one of them. Here is a list of possibilities, starting with my best guess:
-Enhancement level: You can only place enhancements within 3 levels of your toon. If you have a 10 Accuracy Enhancement it can only be placed if you are levels 7-13. After that, it is worthless and cannot be placed.
-Power does not accept: Certain powers only take certain types of enhancements. Accuracy can be placed in (most) attacks, but not in armors, for example. Some enhancements, like Confuse or Intangibility, can only go in a few select powers, which you may not have.
-Origin: If you've gotten into the teens, you may have started getting a few "Dual Origin" enhancements. These have a different outline than Training Enhancements and are twice as effective. These can only be slotted if your toon's origin matches 1 of the 2 origins of the enhancement. For example a Magic/Mutation DO can only be placed by heros/villains of Magic or Mutation origin. Later in your career, there are Single Origin enhancements as well, which are twice as good as DOs, but can only be slotted by the 1 origin they correspond to.
Other resources:
-In game tutorial. If you get a chance, roll a new toon and read through the section on enhancements in the tutorial. I haven't read it in a while, but I think it's pretty informative.
-Check out ParagonWiki Enhancements section. It has a lot of info. The wiki is a very good resource for players over all so search for other stuff you have questions on there too for fast response.

I was clicking on the button next to "manage" instead of the word itself!
That little button just detaches the tray. I appreciate the rapid response!

I'm glad you're enjoying it, and I certainly hope you find it worthwhile to upgrade to a full retail version.
Of all the MMOGs I've played, CoH has bar none the best community around. I have found only the short-lived Tabula Rasa had a similar solid community. My point being, feel free to ask in-game, on here in the forums if you have any other questions. You'll generally find help will be quickly and freely given.

Enhancements are about the only thing that your Origin will continue to affect through most of the game, and even then it's very little (yeah, Origin is completely superfluous otherwise).
Note that there's other kinds of enhancements; as well as rarely slotted Hamidon Origin enhancements at the highest level (and other similar ones of lower level), there's also Invention Origin (IOs) ones that are crafted with various drop items (that's what your Invention Salvage and Recipes are for, if you've found any of them yet), and they're a whole 'nother kettle of fish.
Also, you don't need to click manage. If you double click on the word "Enhancements", that will also open the management screen.

(and here is the one issue with the merged boards... without asking there is no way to know if a player is on the NA or EU servers so it makes offering help ingame a little more...umm...uncertain.)

There are jerks in CoH, just like anywhere else, but the jackhole population seems to be lower than in other games.
