Character Name Rules Re: Hyphens and Spaces?
One way I torture myself is by spending idle moments during the working day thinking up good character names, then scribbling them down and waiting to see if they're available when I get home.
I thought I understood the naming conventions for hyphens and spaces -- only one -- but recently I believe I've seen characters in game with more than one space in their names (example: Red Riding Hood, two spaces). So now I'm confused. Are there known limits? I tried looking in the wiki, but couldn't find this. What about one hyphen and one space? (The) Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo? What about multiple hyphens? Civil-War-Reenactor Man? Period, space, and hyphen: Mr. Yin-Yang? Multiple periods? Could I make a character called Hold Still...? Thanks! |
You can have as many spaces as you want, and ONE single approved punctuation mark. - . ?
I wouldn't have expected a "one-space" rule; too many legitimate names have multiple spaces, as you illustrated.
As far as I'm concerned, if the name makes sense, it doesn't matter how many spaces or punctuation marks are in them. There are no hard and fast "rules", only personal opinions.
Admittedly, if one goes overboard with punctuation all over the place, there will be more opinions against it than for it.

Well, you can have as many spaces as you want, but punctuation marks are indeed limited.

Guess I've been involved in too many naming convention threads and misinterpreted the question.
Can I give myself negative rep for that? (wait, wrong thread)

Spaces can be used multiple times, but not at the beginning, end, or more than one in a row.

To expand on this thread, the character limit is from 3 to 20, including spaces and special symbols.
The title "The" does not count toward this limit, and your name cannot start with the word "The" or it will automatically vanish and be replaced by the Title selection of the word "The" instead. lol
Dangit, I searched around on the wiki under several terms and found nothing, and also consulted the table of contents. :P

I had a hard time finding that and I wrote it! Had to search on 'apostrophe' to find it.
Problem is that "player character" and "PC" go to two different pages that both say the same thing, namely, that PC is the abbreviation for Player Character. To find the page in question, you need to have used the plural "player characters".
"Name" and "Names" goes nowhere.
"Player Name" shows the page in question as the sixth choice. "Player Names" shows the page in question as the thirtieth choice.
I would add in the redirects myself, but I'm unsure how to resolve the abbreviation and definition page issues.

What were your search terms? We can add them as redirects to the section ZM linked above.

In general, I find searching any wiki (it's not just you) to be much less forgiving of typos and the choice of highly specific terms than, say Google. But that's probably a reflection on the quality of Google's algorithm and not on wiki editors' dedication.

Well, I don't remember exactly, but things like "character name," "character," "new character," "naming conventions," and so on.

My only complaint with the naming conventions is that the maximum allowable names are too short.
I want to name my Frank Zappa homage character "Frank With the Showing Scalp Flat-Top Haircut," but dagnabbit, it's too long.

For example, you couldn't have the name "Mr. Doo-Fuddles".
I wish they'd allow at least two punctuation marks... with the rule they couldn't be next to each other.
For example, often I've wanted names like:
"Heal-A-Matic" or such... but alas, ain't gonna happen.

At least they are longer than they used to be allowed.
