Best PVE Perma Combo?

Hi,

Was wondering, after all the changes, which Combo is best suited for Perma-Dom Build in PVE?

I know Fire/Psi was the King before, but which Combo works best now?

Thanks for the input.

You'll likely get some varied responses. IMO fire/fire takes the cake.

Perma dom fire is "enough" control for pretty much everything and high recharge /fire is miles ahead of every other assault set.

This combo embraces the concept that dead enemies are preferred to controlled enemies. But it can also control them too heh.

That's not a simple question and the question itself is ambiguous. You could be asking either:

1. Which is the best performing Dominator combo at Permadom level recharge?

and

2. Which is the best Dominator to perma (ie., which is the easiest/cheapest to perma)?

If it's #1 (which is kind of implied by mentioning Fire/Psi because that combo is hard to perma), you should probably define what you mean by "best performing". Best performing on a Master of X SF is almost certainly not best performing for L50 farming for instance. There's also the question of what level of recharge are we talking about? Just perma? Or heading into permahasten territory?

If it's for all round flexibility and shear awesome than my vote is still for Fire/Psi, but as I said, the question is not that simple.

Except if you're doing an ITF, a far more effective Dom would be something with a mass confuse like Mind or Plant. You come up with any Dom combo and I suspect we could come up with an end-game situation where there is a better Dominator. That's probably a good thing design-wise.

I do like Fire/Fire though, but it would be an absolute PITA to Perma. For me Fire/Psi gets a slight nod because of Drain Psyche vs AV-class enemies, but it would be a toss-up whether the loss of regen vs the extra damage of Fiery Embrace wins out.

Aside from the ability to one shot sleep AV's ime mind isn't worthy of cleaning fire's shoes. If you are relying on mass confusion to progress through a TF (including the ITF) you have a very long complete time ahead of you. Not to mention the joy of only adding single target damage for the most part. Now plant, that is an amazing set for sure and has an aoe confuse worth mentioning.

/psy gets my nod for GM class enemies, but not AV class. If we are talking a high recharge dom FE combined with fire assaults much higher damage/dpa powers is indeed as good or better than the -regen of DP. In a team setting, which is where most doms do their AV fighting I'll generally leave the -regen to other people as it is a pretty common effect. Additionally that extra damage becomes super extra damage with debuffers around.

Like I said though, varied responses. I probably look at perma dom differently than some other people. I look at it as opening up the ability to spend minimal time controlling and maximum time killing. So for me fire/fire is the clear choice.
Edit: fire/fire isn't that bad to perma. Definitely one of the more difficult/expensive ones, but there are so many more recharge options since perma first became an option that achieving it without sacrificing your build is a reality any dom should be able to accomplish.

If you perma-dom for the purpose of control then maybe earth/earth? I dunno though I don't look at it that way.

If you want a cheap perma dom then mind/energy is probably the easiest, but plant is good too and imo a much better set than mind.

That said, I can't think of any perma-dom combos that aren't very powerful.

For all out pure carnage and damage...Fire/Fire or Fire/Psi. I'd say they are neck and neck in terms of perfomance.

For total lockdown: Mind/Anything....

Plant and Earth aint half bad either....

Gravity still has some problems but if you'd rather blast more than control, its not a bad choice. Mostly because you can skip so much of it...and the pet will most of the controlling for you.

This is the Dom I've been working on, and the Build I have in mind. Let me know what you think, and if there are any improvements I could make.

Thanks again.

So why ask the question in the first place if you're just going to do a Grav/Energy Dom?

I have trouble thinking of that combo as "best" of anything.

Posted

Yeah, Grav is kind of bad. Energy's pretty sexy after the I15 buffs... but Grav is outpaced by everything else in PvE. Honestly, you still can't go wrong with Fire/Psi - it's a bit slower than it was prior to I15 but it's still top-tier control and AoE damage (and now it's got very good single-target damage as well).

I was aking which Combo's are best because two Members of my SG asked me. They don't care much for using the Forums, even though I have told them numerous times that there is a wealth of Info and Help here.

I'm looking at Grav/Energy because I already have one that is lvl 24, and would hate to have to start over myself. I also have an Earth/Earth I started after I16 but haven't played as much.

However, after reading your responses, I am looking at starting a Fire/Fire.

Thanks

Fire/Fire is a good choice for any Dom whether you perma it or not. It's a little lacking on control, but it more than makes up for it with damage. Some quick tips:

* Grab Flashfire as soon as it's available and 5 or 6 slot it early.

* Put off Hot Feet until after Stamina.

* Be careful with Fire Cages; early on you may not be able to deal with the aggro it will bring. Also, spamming it can hurt your endurance.

* You can safely ignore the to-hit debuff in Smoke; it's really small.

I notice you didn't mention Ice Control at all. It seems to get forgotten a lot - or is it just a set whose problems outweigh its virtues?

There's a thread from last month that discusses where Ice Control sits here.

To summarize, it has its uses, but generally speaking Ice and Gravity pretty much share the bottom rung.

Ive got one Dom and its a Fire/Psi with Ghost Widow as patron and that has worked out very very well. He is permadom and needs it because with the end cost changes to Psi it needs to be up a lot just for the end recovery. I can see Fire/Fire working very well also.

The hard things I can do--- The impossible just take a little bit longer.

If numbers are so much more important than a teammate who is fun to play with, forget about the game altogether and go play with a calculator instead. -Claws and Effect-

Hmm. Well, I think I'll still give Ice Control a spin. I've got a hankering to play Ice/Fire. We'll see how it works out.

It's a great combo. I don't think you'll be unhappy. It's also one of the best/easiest combos for soft-capping ranged defense while still being perma, if you are so inclined.

Well, I created my Fire/Fire, and decided quite quickly that I didn't like it, lol. I have since started a Mind/Energy, since a couple peeps here said Mind/Anything is good. So far I'm loving that Combo.

Thanks for all the suggestions, and help.

Once I get a Perma-Build worked up in Mid's I may post it for further suggestions on how it can be improved.

For pure control, a Mind/Nrg perma dom is the best control in the game, with some okay damage to boot. If you're looking for lockdown, you will enjoy the build.

I have a build that is Perma without Hasten and has soft-capped Energy/Ranged with 41 Negative and 38 S/L Def. I can pull it out if you want to take a look. It's ridiculously expensive.

Wonder if it'd be worth it to not worry about ranged and see if I can get 45 S/L/N/E.

Sure. I'd be interested in soliciting some feedback on ways to maybe improve it. The point of the build is to mostly just do SFs and PvE stuff. Not really farming, or else I would have looked at something more AoE intesive.

If I could drop Power Bolt, I'd throw Bone Smasher in in a heartbeat. I just don't see a way to really fit it in, keeping my Ranged Soft-Cap and perma. I'll have to play around with dropping Total Domination and moving some slots around. It might be doable.

Sure Post it. I'd like to see it. So far I'm absolutely loving this toon. It's the best Dom yet that I've Solo'd with. Not too bad when I teamed last night either.
